Nissan says it will use the automaker’s third-generation e-POWER hybrid system and e-4ORCE electric four-wheel drive. The launch may broaden Nissan’s offering, but the company has not quantified a gap in the Japanese market that the Elgrand is meant to fill.
What is Nissan’s new hybrid minivan?
It is the all-new, fourth-generation Nissan Elgrand, a premium minivan intended for the Japanese market. Nissan presented the vehicle at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 and described the displayed model as pre-production. The company says the Elgrand is scheduled to launch in Japan in summer 2026. The timing is a launch window, not a confirmed on-sale date. Nissan’s announcement does not provide a complete production specification sheet, so details such as grades, pricing, cabin configurations and official fuel-economy figures remain unconfirmed in the available product information.
Is the new Nissan Elgrand a hybrid?

How does third-generation e-POWER work?
The system combines a dedicated generator engine with a five-in-one electric unit. Nissan’s technical overview identifies the unit’s integrated components as the motor, inverter, generator, reduction gear and speed-increasing gear. That layout explains the distinction from a conventional hybrid in which an engine can also mechanically drive the wheels: Nissan says e-POWER uses the engine to make electricity and the motor to propel the vehicle. What Nissan says about efficiency—and what it does not establish
In March 2025, Nissan set a target of up to 15% better high-speed fuel economy for third-generation e-POWER compared with its then-current second-generation system. That is a manufacturer target for the system, not an independently verified result or an Elgrand-specific fuel-economy rating. Nissan also reported that more than 1.6 million e-POWER units had been produced since the system’s introduction in 2016. That cumulative company figure describes e-POWER production, not sales or production of the Elgrand. Nissan’s March 2025 announcement

“Fill a glaring gap” is an interpretation, not a quantified Nissan claim. In its portfolio strategy, Nissan identifies the Elgrand as a growth model for targeted expansion and says it intends to streamline its model range while broadening powertrain choices. For now, the clearest description is that Nissan is preparing a premium Japanese-market minivan with its latest announced e-POWER hybrid system and electric four-wheel drive. Whether it stands out against particular rivals will depend on production details—including price, grades, seating and equipment—that Nissan has not yet established in the cited materials.
