The key idea is that the van can be changed from camper use to another role, such as a workshop, by swapping modules—not that Nissan announced a single camper that does everything while fully equipped.
What Nissan showed at Caravan Salon 2024
Nissan Germany announced on August 26, 2024, that it would present the Interstar with a PlugVan living module at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, held August 30 through September 8. Nissan called the presentation the Interstar’s German debut. The announcement establishes a trade-show configuration, not that every pictured setup was a standard factory vehicle or that the combination was broadly available to buy.
Nissan’s description emphasizes the module system: the living unit can be changed for other modules, including a workshop module, so one base van can serve different purposes at different times. The company says an integrated chassis helps with loading and unloading during swaps. In its German-language announcement, Nissan wrote, “Ein integriertes Fahrwerk hilft beim Modulwechsel, sodass das Be- und Entladen zum Kinderspiel wird.” In translation: “An integrated chassis helps with changing modules, making loading and unloading child’s play.” Nissan Germany’s August 26, 2024 announcement describes the concept.
What the reported PlugVan Life module includes
New Atlas’s August 26, 2024 report gives a more detailed picture of the PlugVan Life setup shown with the Interstar. Its reported equipment includes a kitchen and sink, a portable single-burner gas stove, seating that converts into a double bed, a retractable table, and a slide-out fridge. The report also describes an outdoor shower.

For utilities, New Atlas reports that this configuration had 43 liters of fresh water and 43 liters of waste-water capacity. It says an available Jackery power station could run the fridge and integrated lights, but does not identify a power-station model. These are details of the 2024 configuration as reported, not confirmed specifications for every PlugVan module or current model year.
The report says the module rolls in and out on detachable, adjustable wheels and that setup is claimed to take five minutes. That is a PlugVan claim relayed by New Atlas, not an independently timed result. A separate bathroom module was reported with a 6-liter fresh-water tank and a 12-volt recirculating gray-water filtration and UV purification system. New Atlas also listed a portable dry-separating toilet and water heater as optional accessories; the report does not establish their current availability.

How the modular idea changes the van’s role
The Interstar/PlugVan approach differs from a dedicated camper conversion: the living space is a removable module, and Nissan explicitly points to other modules, including a workshop unit. That makes changing the van’s use the central versatility claim. The sources do not give a controlled comparison with fixed camper conversions, nor do they establish which Interstar configurations or cargo-area dimensions fit each module.
- Living module: The PlugVan Life configuration described by New Atlas is arranged for cooking, eating, sleeping, and basic water use.
- Workshop module: Nissan cites this as another possible work-oriented module; New Atlas reported historical prices for workshop layouts, but neither source establishes present-day fitment or availability.
- Bathroom module: New Atlas describes this as a separate module rather than an included part of the reported living setup.
In practical terms, the system is most compelling for someone who wants one van to alternate between leisure and work rather than remain a permanently outfitted camper. Before treating it as a workable solution, a buyer would need to confirm compatibility with the exact Interstar body and cargo area, how module swaps are handled, and whether the desired modules can be obtained in their region.

A different Nissan camper at the same show
Nissan also presented the Primastar Seaside by Dethleffs at Caravan Salon 2024. It is a separate vehicle and conversion approach, not another name for the Interstar/PlugVan setup. Nissan described the Primastar as a near-production study developed with Dethleffs and said a Revotion-developed digital control unit lets an app remotely control selected features, including lighting, heating, and air conditioning. Nissan’s August 23, 2024 announcement covers that model.
What to verify before buying
The available descriptions are tied to the 2024 German trade show, so they do not answer whether a particular configuration can be ordered today. Ask Nissan and PlugVan—or a local dealer or converter—to confirm:

- Current delivery timing, warranty coverage, and support for both the vehicle and conversion.
