They establish some useful lineup and warranty differences, but they do not prove that one brand is broadly more reliable, safer, or cheaper to own.
Should I buy a Nissan or a Toyota?
Start with the kind of vehicle you need, then compare Nissan and Toyota models in the same class. Match model year, trim, drivetrain, and price range; a hybrid crossover should not be judged against a gasoline sedan simply because they share a badge.
Toyota’s U.S. 2026 lineup includes cars such as Corolla, Camry, and Prius, as well as the RAV4 and vehicles in other classes and powertrains, according to Toyota’s 2026 model-year newsroom. Nissan’s U.S. lineup includes Sentra, LEAF, Rogue, Kicks, Armada, and Frontier, according to Nissan’s lineup page. The lists are not a direct comparison: the right shortlist depends on your body-style, space, and powertrain requirements.
If a hybrid Nissan Rogue is on your shortlist, Nissan’s lineup page describes the 2027 Rogue Hybrid as expected in limited quantities beginning November 2026. That is a future availability statement, not a guarantee of local inventory; check with dealers for current timing and supply.

Which brand has the better warranty?
The published terms below cover different things, so they are not a complete head-to-head warranty comparison. Check the warranty booklet for the exact vehicle, model year, exclusions, and conditions before buying.

For the Nissan terms, Nissan’s FAQ states: “Every new Nissan vehicle includes basic warranty protection featuring 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.” Toyota’s hybrid-battery term may matter to a hybrid shopper, but it should not be treated as coverage for every Toyota or compared as if it were the same coverage as Nissan’s basic or powertrain warranty.

Which is cheaper to maintain?
The available figures do not establish that either brand costs less to maintain overall. Maintenance and ownership costs depend on the model, service schedule, local labor and parts prices, annual mileage, insurance, fuel or charging costs, and resale value.
For a fair estimate, price the same ownership period and annual mileage for the exact vehicles you are considering. Use local insurance quotes, scheduled-maintenance information for each model, fuel or electricity assumptions that match your driving, and transaction prices that include destination charges and dealer add-ons. Do not treat an advertised starting price or one fuel-economy figure as a total-cost comparison.

Is Toyota more reliable than Nissan?
The evidence cited here does not establish a like-for-like independent reliability ranking between the two brands. Brand reputation, sales volume, and an individual model’s survey result are not enough to prove a brand-wide reliability advantage. Look for independent data that compares the exact models and model years you are considering, and check whether the measure reflects owner-reported problems, repair frequency, or another definition of reliability.
Which brand is safer?
No matched safety comparison is established here. Compare NHTSA and IIHS results for the specific model years and body styles, then check which driver-assistance features are standard or optional on the trims you would actually buy. A result for one vehicle or trim should not be generalized to every Nissan or Toyota.

Should I buy a RAV4 or a Rogue?
Do not choose between the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue based on brand alone. The cited material does not supply matched prices, trim-level safety results, cabin or cargo measurements, ownership costs, or equivalent fuel-economy data for these two SUVs. Compare specific model years and similarly equipped trims before deciding.
- Set the configuration. Decide whether you want a gasoline vehicle, hybrid, or another powertrain, and identify the drivetrain and features you need.
- Compare the price you will pay. Get quotes for the same model year and comparable equipment, including destination and dealer add-ons.
- Check efficiency on the same basis. Use estimates for the exact configurations, and account for your own annual mileage and local fuel or electricity costs.
- Inspect fit and equipment. Compare seating, cargo needs, standard safety features, and model-specific NHTSA or IIHS evaluations.
- Estimate ownership costs locally. Add insurance quotes, scheduled maintenance, and expected resale considerations for your location and planned ownership period.
Nissan’s 2026.5 Rogue press kit lists 29 city, 36 highway, and 32 combined MPG for the stated configuration. That is a configuration-specific figure, not a Nissan-wide rating or a matched RAV4 comparison. Toyota likewise publishes model- and configuration-specific estimates, so compare the figures for the exact trims and powertrains under consideration.

What Toyota’s sales figures do—and do not—show
Toyota Motor North America reported 2,518,071 U.S. vehicle sales in 2025, an 8.0% increase by volume over the prior year; the company reported that electrified vehicles accounted for 47.0% of its total sales volume. These company-reported figures describe Toyota’s sales scale and mix. They do not establish that Toyota vehicles are more reliable or safer than Nissan vehicles.
