There is no clear winner for every buyer: the better choice depends on the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, price and the features you value. The available figures point to a Rogue FWD advantage in its listed starting prices and a potentially more fuel-efficient RAV4 configuration, but they are not a like-for-like comparison. Match the vehicles you can actually buy before deciding.
Start with the model year and configuration
The Nissan specifications cited here are for the 2026.5 Rogue; Toyota’s official page is for the 2026 RAV4. Car and Driver’s comparison tool displays selected configurations for its 2026 comparison. Those labels do not establish that every figure represents an equivalent trim or drivetrain.
Before comparing numbers, choose the model year and trim you would buy, then match front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Equipment, fuel economy and price can change by configuration. Check local inventory and current offers as well: published specifications and starting prices are not a dealer quote.
How do the published figures compare?
| Measure | Nissan Rogue | Toyota RAV4 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model year shown | 2026.5, Nissan USA trim page | 2026, Toyota official page and Car and Driver comparison | Not the same stated model year; verify the vehicles available to you. |
| Starting price examples | $28,590 for S FWD and $29,590 for SV FWD; Nissan lists destination separately at $1,495. | Not stated on the cited Toyota page. | Car and Driver’s selected comparison lists $31,065 for Rogue and $33,495 for RAV4, but that is a different presentation basis. Do not compare those figures directly with Nissan’s trim MSRPs as out-the-door prices. |
| Fuel economy | 33 mpg combined for S and SV FWD; 32 mpg combined for SL FWD. | 40 mpg combined for the selected RAV4 configuration in Car and Driver’s comparison tool. | Rogue figures are Nissan’s listed trim-specific specifications. Confirm the selected RAV4 trim and EPA figure with Toyota before treating the comparison as definitive. |
| Cargo volume | 36.5 cu. ft. for the displayed trims on Nissan’s page. | 37.8 cu. ft. behind the second row in Car and Driver’s selected comparison. | Car and Driver lists 31.6 cu. ft. behind the second row for its selected Rogue as well. The figures differ by source and possibly configuration or measurement basis; check the exact vehicle and seat position. |
| Towing | Up to 1,500 lb for the displayed trims, per Nissan. | 1,750 lb in Car and Driver’s selected comparison. | Verify the Toyota rating for the exact trim and equipment before towing; do not assume every RAV4 has the comparison tool’s limit. |

Which one fits your priorities?
Choose the Rogue if its listed price and trim fit your budget
Nissan lists starting MSRPs of $28,590 for the 2026.5 Rogue S FWD and $29,590 for SV FWD, with a $1,495 destination charge shown separately. Those numbers are useful starting points, not a complete purchase price. Compare the same drivetrain and equipment on both vehicles, then include destination, dealer charges and any current offer in the quote you evaluate.
Give the RAV4 a closer look if fuel economy is a priority
Car and Driver’s selected 2026 RAV4 configuration is listed at 40 mpg combined, compared with Nissan’s 32–33 mpg combined figures for the displayed Rogue FWD trims. Because these are not confirmed matched trims and drivetrains, treat this as a reason to check the exact EPA label for each vehicle—not proof that every RAV4 beats every Rogue.

Measure cargo space using the same method
The published cargo numbers do not line up cleanly: Nissan lists 36.5 cu. ft. for the displayed Rogue trims, while Car and Driver lists 31.6 cu. ft. behind the second row for its selected Rogue and 37.8 cu. ft. for its selected RAV4. Check how the manufacturer or comparison source defines the measurement, and whether the second-row seat is in the same position. If cargo capacity matters, compare the vehicles in person with your usual luggage, stroller or other bulky items.
Verify towing capacity for the exact vehicle
Nissan lists up to 1,500 lb for the Rogue trims shown. Car and Driver lists 1,750 lb for its selected RAV4 configuration, but the cited Toyota page does not establish that rating. Confirm the limit in Toyota’s specifications or owner documentation for the exact trim and equipment, and make sure the fully loaded trailer stays within the vehicle’s limits.

What to compare before you buy
- Out-the-door price: Request a written quote for the same trim level and drivetrain, with destination and dealer charges itemized. Treat advertised starting prices and comparison-tool prices as different kinds of figures.
- Fuel economy: Compare the EPA rating for the exact FWD or AWD trim, not a model-wide headline number.
- Space: Confirm cargo volume using the same seat position and measurement basis; check passenger room and seating comfort in person.
- Safety and driver assistance: Compare standard and optional equipment on the specific trims. The cited materials do not establish a matched safety-rating comparison.
- Warranty: Read the warranty coverage for each model year and region rather than assuming it is identical across vehicles or markets.
- Availability: Check local inventory and current offers. A configuration shown online may not be available at nearby dealers.
What the available comparison does not settle
The cited pages do not establish equivalent independent safety ratings, comparative long-term reliability, total cost of ownership, local dealer pricing or current inventory. They also do not settle which vehicle is the better value once equivalent trims, equipment and offers are priced. Decide using verified details for the vehicles you can actually purchase, rather than turning a few unmatched specifications into an overall verdict.
