Nissan unveiled it for the 2017 New York International Auto Show with equipment designed to help dogs ride, get cleaned up and travel with their families.
What the Rogue Dogue was
Nissan described the Dogue as a custom 2017 Rogue SL with the Platinum Reserve Interior Package, which included premium tan leather-appointed seats with quilted leather inserts. Vehicle Effects owner Dennis McCarthy built the project vehicle. Nissan scheduled it for display at the New York International Auto Show from April 14 through April 23, 2017. Nissan’s April 11, 2017 announcement presented it as a special project, not a production model or factory accessory package.
What Nissan added for dogs
The custom equipment addressed several parts of traveling with a dog: restraint, access to the cargo area, comfort, cleanup and care on the road. Nissan listed these features on the project vehicle:
- Restraint and separation: secure leash-fastening attachments in the second row and cargo area, harness clips, a removable pet partition and a dog hammock.
- Access and resting: a secured, removable dog bed and a slide-away ramp.
- Food and water: fold-down, non-spill food and water dispensers.
- Washing and drying: a 360-degree shower supplied by a 10-gallon pressurized water reserve, plus an integrated heated-air dog dryer.
- Temperature and cleanup: heated vents for the cargo bed and easy-clean custom materials.
- Other practical touches: a modified pass-through, rear-facing cameras, a dog first-aid kit and a poop-bag dispenser.
These were features Nissan said it installed for this build; their appearance in the project does not mean they were available as standard Rogue equipment, factory options or a purchasable Dogue kit.

What Nissan’s 2017 dog-owner survey found
Nissan cited a survey of 401 current dog owners conducted March 27–29, 2017, by Heart+Mind Strategies in Reston, Virginia. In Nissan’s account, 83 percent said it was as important for their dog to be safe and comfortable in a vehicle as it was for other passengers. Respondents selected a clip-in harness hook most often among the dog-friendly features listed, followed by a non-spill water dispenser and a slide-away ramp.

These are results Nissan reported from that 2017 survey, not current estimates of all dog owners and not evidence that any feature improves safety outcomes. Nissan also said more than 75 percent of respondents would be influenced in vehicle choice by optional features for dog safety and comfort; that, too, refers to the same survey, not a current market measure. Could the Dogue features be added to a regular Rogue?
McCarthy said the project’s features were “very possible to add to a production Rogue,” while noting that the ramp, storage compartments and food and water dispensers would slightly reduce available rear cargo area. That comment describes the builder’s view of feasibility; it does not establish that Nissan sold, approved or supported a production conversion.
For owners considering dog-oriented equipment, useful checks include the dog’s size and the product’s fit, the vehicle year and cargo-area dimensions, the manufacturer’s restraint instructions, cleaning requirements and how much cargo room an installation uses. Nissan’s feature list is a reference for the kinds of needs the project addressed, not a tested ranking of aftermarket products.

What Nissan’s later pet accessories do—and don’t—tell us
Nissan later said customer response to the Rogue Dogue and the European-market X-Trail 4Dogs concept helped inspire a pet-accessory range. The company described durable, waterproof materials intended to protect seats and cargo areas. That account does not show that the Dogue’s custom ramp, shower, dryer, dispensers or other bespoke equipment became a production package, nor does it establish current stock or fitment for a particular Rogue model year. A vehicle dog safety harness or a waterproof SUV cargo liner may address needs reflected in the Dogue’s restraint points and easy-clean cargo area, but neither is identified as a specific product in Nissan’s announcement, and Nissan did not endorse third-party models. Check that a harness is used according to its manufacturer’s instructions and that a liner fits the vehicle’s Rogue model year before buying.
