Its defining feature is a modular interior mounted on three pairs of continuous Airline floor rails: seats, tables and load-securing points can be repositioned or removed for the job at hand. The compromise is equally important: conversion hardware uses payload and cargo space, and the standard FlexVan provides a bed rather than a full motorhome kitchen.
What the Nissan Primastar FlexVan is
The Primastar is Nissan’s diesel medium-size van, available with manual or automatic transmission. FlexVan is a conversion concept rather than a separate van platform. Nissan identifies Mobitec as the German conversion partner, while the rail-based interior is developed with seating and conversion specialists.

Three continuous Airline floor rails run through the passenger and load area. They provide the mounting points for individual seats and furniture, while also serving as load-securing tracks. MobiTEC’s LightFLOOR equipment includes removable or folding seats, seat consoles, a table, USB and 12-volt outlets, and optional holders for bicycles, mopeds or motorcycles and wheelchairs.
That makes the same Primastar useful for tradespeople, families, accessibility transport and leisure equipment. It is not a fixed eight-seat minibus or a permanently fitted motorhome; its value is the ability to change the interior.

How the seating and rail system works
Two seats and an open load bay
With only the front seats and the rear furniture removed, the FlexVan becomes a conventional load carrier. This is the configuration that gives a small business the greatest usable floor area and the least interior weight from conversion equipment.
Family and crew layouts
The concept supports up to eight seats, with intermediate arrangements made by moving individual seats along the rails. A family can retain several rear seats for daily travel, then remove or fold selected seats when carrying equipment. The table and seat consoles can be repositioned with the rest of the system.
Can the seats be removed without a workshop?
Removable and folding seats are part of the LightFLOOR design, so routine reconfiguration is intended to be owner-operated rather than a specialist fabrication job. Follow the supplied locking procedure, use every required rail latch and confirm that each seat is locked before carrying passengers. The exact operation, seat count and legal seating approval depend on the particular conversion and market; keep the converter’s instructions and approval documents with the vehicle.

Passenger capacity, cargo volume and payload
Do not confuse Nissan’s standard Primastar figures with the capacity of a finished FlexVan. Body length, roof height, crew-van or panel-van specification, transmission, options and conversion modules all change the result.
| Primastar body (Nissan UK figures) | Cargo volume | How to interpret it for a FlexVan |
|---|---|---|
| Panel van L1H1 | 5.8 m³ | Baseline short-body panel-van figure before considering conversion equipment and seats. |
| Panel van L2H1 | 6.7 m³ | Nissan UK’s maximum cited panel-van volume; rails, seats and modules reduce usable space. |
| Crew van L1 | 3.2 m³ | Reflects the permanently occupied crew area more closely than panel-van figures. |
| Crew van L2 | 4.0 m³ | Long-body crew-van figure, still subject to the installed conversion layout. |
Nissan UK’s current technical information gives a payload-with-driver range reaching 1,144 kg. That is a vehicle-range maximum, not a promise for every FlexVan. Seats, rails, table, kitchen units, roof equipment and personal luggage add weight; Nissan also warns that options increase kerb weight and reduce payload. Check the individual vehicle’s VIN plate, registration data and conversion weight before planning a heavy load or a full complement of passengers.
For practical planning, weigh the van in the layout you actually use, then subtract passengers, water, camping gear and business tools. A rail system improves flexibility, but it cannot remove the underlying payload limit.

Is the standard FlexVan a camper?
What the base conversion provides
Three reclining Schnierle Relax seats can fold into a sleeping surface measuring 1.9 by 1.32 metres. A soft topper is available as an option. This is suitable for overnight stops, festivals and short trips, but the base FlexVan has no kitchen. Think of it as a sleeper or light camper, not a self-contained motorhome.

FlexVan Camper
The Camper version adds a pop-up roof, kitchen module and storage module. It is the more complete choice for people who expect to cook and spend longer periods inside the vehicle. Confirm the exact appliances, storage arrangement and bed specification with the converter, because equipment can vary by country and model year.
Camper Light
Camper Light uses a rear kitchen module and a rear bed module. It targets buyers who want dedicated camping functions without necessarily choosing the full Camper equipment package. The distinction is an equipment level, not a different vehicle platform; both retain the modular FlexVan approach.

| Version | Sleeping provision | Cooking and storage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base FlexVan | Folded reclining seats create a 1.9 × 1.32 m bed; topper optional | No kitchen; table and modular storage options | Occasional sleeping, mixed work and family use |
| FlexVan Camper | Camper bed arrangement, specification varies | Pop-up roof, kitchen module and storage module | Regular camping and longer stays |
| FlexVan Camper Light | Rear bed module | Rear kitchen module | Dedicated camping functions with a simpler equipment level |
Camperland describes Camper and Camper Light as different equipment levels on the same modular idea. Ask for the build sheet rather than relying on the badge: converter, country and model year can alter the included equipment.

| Primary use | Useful starting layout | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Small business or trades | Two seats with rear seats and modules removed | Payload after conversion, floor loading and approved tie-down points |
| Family transport | Several rear seats plus table as required | Number of approved passenger positions, child-seat compatibility and access around the rails |
| Mixed family and cargo | Move only the seats needed for each trip | Where removed seats can be stored and how much time reconfiguration takes |
| Weekend camping | Reclining seats folded into the bed | Topper dimensions, ventilation, privacy and night-time storage |
| Longer camping trips | FlexVan Camper or Camper Light | Kitchen contents, water and electrical equipment, roof operation and remaining payload |
| Mobility or sports equipment | Open rail floor with the relevant holder or ramp | Wheelchair, bicycle or motorcycle accessory rating and loading clearance |
What to verify before buying
- Count the approved seats. Confirm the registered seating capacity for the exact conversion, not merely the maximum advertised concept.
- Read the weight documents. Compare the van’s plated masses and actual kerb weight with the payload you need for passengers, tools and camping equipment.
- Inspect every module. Check that seats, table, consoles, kitchen units and storage lock positively to the rails and that unused mounting points can be covered or protected.
- Confirm the camping specification. Establish whether the vehicle is the base FlexVan, Camper or Camper Light and list the included bed, topper, kitchen, storage, roof and electrical equipment.
- Check legal approval. Ask for conversion certification, seat-belt approvals and any registration changes required in your country.
- Test your real load. Take the largest tools, bikes, wheelchair or child seats you will carry and test access, tie-down positions and remaining passenger space.
Price, warranty and market differences
New Atlas reported a German starting price of €54,121 including VAT for a Schnierle-based FlexVan in December 2025. Treat that as a time- and market-specific reference, not a current universal price: engine, body length, conversion level, taxes and options can all change the total.

The conversion and its equipment may have separate warranty terms, so request both sets of conditions in writing. Availability, prices, taxation and approval rules differ by country.
Verdict
The Primastar FlexVan is strongest when one vehicle must perform several jobs. Its rails make a genuine two-seat cargo layout, family seating and occasional sleeping possible without permanently sacrificing every other function. Choose the base version if a bed and flexible interior are enough; choose Camper or Camper Light when cooking, dedicated storage and more systematic camping equipment justify the added weight, cost and reduced load space. In every case, judge the individual van by its approved seats, plated payload and actual conversion equipment—not by the headline Primastar figures alone.
