The first generation ran from 2011 through 2017; the 2018 redesign began the second generation, which continued through 2025; and Nissan identifies the all-new 2026 LEAF as the third generation. The key changes were larger battery options, longer EPA-estimated range, and evolving charging and connected-car equipment.
Nissan LEAF generations by model year
| Generation | U.S. model years | Defining milestone |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2011–2017 | Introduced with a 24-kWh battery; a 30-kWh battery replaced the standard 24-kWh pack for 2016. |
| Second generation | 2018–2025 | The 2018 redesign brought a 40-kWh battery; a 60-kWh battery became available with the 2019 LEAF PLUS. |
| Third generation | 2026 onward, based on currently documented U.S. model information | The all-new 2026 LEAF has a 75-kWh battery in the S+ trim. |
Nissan’s heritage history identifies major milestones such as the 2018 redesign, rather than publishing a complete year-by-year generation table. The year ranges above follow those milestones and Nissan’s U.S. model-year references; they are not a claim that every trim or specification was identical throughout a generation.
What changed in each generation?
First generation: 2011–2017
Nissan introduced the LEAF in 2010 as a mass-produced, fully electric vehicle, with a 24-kWh battery. For the U.S. timeline, 2011 is the first model year. Early first-generation cars generally began with a 24-kWh pack, although equipment and specifications could vary by market and trim.
For model year 2016, Nissan says a 30-kWh battery replaced the standard 24-kWh battery. Nissan cited an EPA-estimated range of 107 miles for that 2016 LEAF. That figure belongs to the stated model-year milestone; it should not be applied indiscriminately to every first-generation car.

Second generation: 2018–2025
The 2018 LEAF introduced an all-new design and a 40-kWh battery. Nissan cited 151 miles of EPA-estimated range for the 2018 model. In 2019, the LEAF PLUS added an available 60-kWh battery and up to 226 EPA-estimated miles. Battery capacity and range depend on the year and configuration, so the generation label alone does not identify a particular car’s specifications.
Third generation: 2026 onward
Nissan calls the all-new 2026 LEAF its third generation. Nissan lists a 75-kWh battery and up to 303 miles of EPA-estimated range for the S+ trim. The range figure is trim-specific and an estimate, not a promise of how far an individual vehicle will travel. Consult Nissan’s 2026 LEAF specifications for current trim details.

Battery and EPA range milestones
| U.S. model-year milestone | Battery capacity | Nissan-cited EPA-estimated range |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 introduction era / 2011 U.S. model-year launch | 24 kWh at introduction | Not stated for this milestone |
| 2016 | 30 kWh | 107 miles |
| 2018 redesign | 40 kWh | 151 miles |
| 2019 LEAF PLUS | Available 60 kWh | Up to 226 miles |
| 2026 S+ | 75 kWh | Up to 303 miles |
These are Nissan’s cited milestones, not a complete specification list for every intervening year, trim, or market. EPA estimates are standardized estimates; real-world driving range varies. For a specific car, match the model year and trim to its official specifications rather than inferring range from its generation.
Charging equipment and guidance differ by model year
The 2011 owner’s manual describes AC Level 1 trickle charging, AC Level 2 normal charging, and DC quick charging when equipped, and names SAE J1772 among the applicable standards. The 2026 manual covers Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging. Nissan’s current manual says, “NISSAN recommends using normal charging for usual charging of the vehicle,” and advises minimizing DC fast charging to help prolong Li-ion battery life. This is not a prohibition on fast charging.

Charging time depends on factors including battery state and age, battery and ambient temperatures, the available power supply, and the vehicle’s electrical use. The 2026 LEAF also has a different charging-port setup from earlier LEAFs, so do not assume a cable or connector bought for an older model will fit. Check the exact vehicle’s equipment and the matching manual before choosing charging hardware or planning a charging session. See the 2026 Nissan LEAF Owner’s Manual for current instructions and compatibility details.
Older LEAFs may have lost NissanConnect services
Older LEAFs can still be driven, but some connected services may no longer work because of cellular network shutdowns. Nissan reports that AT&T discontinued its 2G network on December 31, 2016, and its 3G network on February 22, 2022. Nissan identifies 2011–2015 LEAFs built with 2G telematics and 2016–2017 LEAFs with 3G telematics as affected ranges; some earlier vehicles were upgraded. Vehicles still equipped with the old hardware can no longer access the affected NissanConnect services. Check Nissan’s NissanConnect support information for the applicable vehicle and service details.
