If you want an Xterra sooner, the option today is a used example of the discontinued model: Nissan says production ran from 2000 through the 2015 model year. The new vehicle’s announced outline is limited so far, so it should not be confused with the older SUV’s features or specifications.
What Nissan has confirmed about the returning Xterra
Nissan USA says, “An all-new Xterra is targeted to launch late 2028.” That is a target, not a guaranteed on-sale date. Nissan’s Xterra page and April 14, 2026 announcement describe the planned vehicle as a rugged SUV produced in the United States, built on a new body-on-frame platform and offered with V6 or V6-hybrid power.
Nissan has not announced the returning Xterra’s price, exact sale date, trim lineup, fuel economy, towing capacity, or detailed equipment in those materials. Its announcement also says the company is exploring a family of five U.S.-built models on the body-on-frame platform. That is an exploration, not confirmation that five vehicles will reach production; possible pickups and multi-row SUVs across Nissan and INFINITI remain possibilities rather than established plans.
What Xterra you can get now
Nissan’s discontinued Xterra page identifies 2015 as the final model year, after production from 2000 through 2015. A buyer looking for an Xterra now is therefore shopping for an existing used vehicle, not a new model from Nissan.

Nissan’s historical description presents the earlier Xterra as a five-seat SUV with an aluminum roof rack, cargo capacity, and off-road capability. Those are details of the discontinued vehicle, not specifications for the returning model. For a used purchase, assess the particular vehicle’s year, trim, condition, records, and equipment; no current listings, vehicle condition, or used-market prices are established here.
