Nissan-Honda Merger: Is a Deal Still Possible With the New CEO?

Nissan and Honda have not announced renewed merger talks. Their 2026 cooperation is a software and ECU development agreement, not a corporate merger.

No merger talks are currently documented. Nissan and Honda ended their proposed integration process in February 2025, and Nissan CEO Iván Espinosa said in July 2026 that there was “no discussion around integration.” The companies continue to cooperate on vehicle technology, but their latest announced agreement is a software-development project—not a merger.

Are Nissan and Honda discussing a merger now?

The available statements point to project-based cooperation rather than renewed corporate integration talks. In a July 8, 2026 interview, Nissan president and CEO Iván Espinosa said, “There’s no discussion around integration,” describing the companies’ discussions as focused on projects that benefit both sides. Yahoo Finance reported the interview; the comment describes the situation at that time and does not rule out every possible future negotiation.

The latest formal announcement located is a joint development agreement dated August 31, 2026. It covers software and electronic control units for future vehicles. That agreement shows the automakers are working together in defined areas, but it does not establish that they have restarted merger talks.

What happened to the proposed integration?

On December 23, 2024, Nissan and Honda signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to consider a business integration through a joint holding company. The companies had not decided to combine: the MOU set out a proposal and a tentative process, with an August 2026 effective date among the planned milestones. The companies said the schedule could change or the process could be canceled. Honda’s original announcement describes the proposal.

On February 13, 2025, the automakers jointly announced that they were terminating the MOU and ending the integration discussions. They said they would pursue strategic partnership work instead. Their termination announcement superseded the tentative timetable; the planned August 2026 effective date did not mean a merger occurred.

Why did the 2025 talks end?

According to the companies’ joint announcement, they disagreed over the proposed structure. The initial concept was a joint holding company, with Honda nominating a majority of directors and the CEO. Honda then proposed making itself the parent company and Nissan its subsidiary through a share exchange. The companies said stopping the integration process would better serve decision speed and the implementation of management measures in a volatile market. This is the explanation the companies gave; it does not establish additional motives.

What is the current Nissan-Honda partnership?

On August 31, 2026, Nissan and Honda announced a joint development agreement to standardize multiple core electronic control units (ECUs) and software for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The work includes an in-vehicle operating system, parts of the middleware, and vehicle-control software. Their announcement says the resulting electrical and electronic architecture is planned for application in both companies’ next-generation SDVs from fiscal 2029 onward. The companies’ agreement announcement sets out its scope and planned timing.

This is a defined technology collaboration, not a corporate combination. The distinction matters: companies can share development work without merging ownership, management, or operations.

How the ended proposal differs from current cooperation

Dimension Proposed integration Current documented collaboration
Nature Business integration considered under an MOU Joint development and standardization of software and ECUs for future SDVs
Status MOU terminated February 13, 2025 Agreement announced August 31, 2026
What it establishes A proposal was considered; no completed merger is established Cooperation on specified vehicle technologies; no merger is announced
Timing The tentative August 2026 target was superseded when the MOU ended Application of the shared architecture is planned from fiscal 2029 onward

Could Nissan and Honda talk about a merger again?

Future negotiations cannot be ruled out, but the sources cited here do not show that a merger is currently under consideration. The accurate status is that the 2024 integration process ended in 2025, Espinosa said in July 2026 that there were no integration discussions, and the later formal announcement concerned vehicle software and electronics. A future change would require a new announcement or other reliable evidence; cooperation by itself is not proof that merger talks have resumed.
