Joey Ruiter’s Nomoto is an electric motorcycle concept designed to blend into a city street when parked: its closed body resembles a graffiti-covered telecom signal box. That makes it a striking piece of design, not proven anti-theft technology. The available feature reports no theft trials, measured deterrence, production status, or way to buy one.
What is the Nomoto motorcycle?
The Nomoto is an electric motorcycle concept by designer Joey Ruiter. New Atlas described it on January 11, 2025, as a bike disguised to look like urban infrastructure. When parked, its body lowers flush to the ground, hiding much of the motorcycle’s form and eliminating the need for a side stand.
The disguise is functional as well as visual: panels move to reveal the parts needed to ride.
- A button raises the bodywork, partly revealing the wheels.
- A drop-down cover reveals the handlebars.
- A flip-up rear cover brings out a seat pad.
The feature’s photographs are credited to Brian Kelly/Mark Andrus. Read New Atlas’s Nomoto feature.

Does its camouflage actually stop thieves?
There is no reported test showing that the Nomoto reduces theft, and no quantified deterrence result. Its infrastructure-like appearance is a design idea; the available reporting does not establish how thieves would respond to it in practice. The feature also does not establish that the concept entered production.
For an ordinary motorcycle owner, a cover can conceal a bike’s make and model, but it is only one layer of security. A cover does not lock the motorcycle in place, prevent its engine from starting, or alert you if someone moves it.

What can ordinary motorcycle owners do?
Different security measures address different risks. A useful approach combines concealment, resistance to movement, protection against starting, alerts or recovery help, and secure parking. Choose measures that suit your motorcycle and where you store it.
| Measure | What it helps with | What it does not do by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Plain cover | Conceals the motorcycle’s make and model and protects it from weather and casual interference. | Does not physically secure the bike or prevent the engine from starting. |
| Disc lock, chain and lock, or fixed anchor | Impede moving or carrying away the motorcycle; a floor or wall anchor provides a fixed point for a chain. | Do not conceal the bike or prevent starting unless paired with a separate immobilizer. |
| Immobilizer | Prevents the engine from starting without the correctly coded key. | Does not physically stop someone from moving the motorcycle. |
| Alarm | Can alert people to movement or interference; some systems include movement or anti-grab sensors. | Does not guarantee that someone will intervene or that the motorcycle will be recovered. |
| Tracker and security marking | A tracker may help police trace a stolen motorcycle; marking can help establish ownership and deter resale. | Do not replace locks, secure parking, or prevention measures. |
| Secure storage and visible parking | A garage, locker, or well-lit, busy parking location can limit access or improve visibility. | Cannot substitute for securing the motorcycle itself. |
Conceal the make and model
Harley-Davidson recommends a plain, nondescript cover for concealment and weather protection, describing one as “urban camouflage.” Avon and Somerset Police likewise advises that covering a motorcycle can hide its model and make it less appealing to opportunistic thieves. Use a cover as a visibility measure, not as a theft-proof barrier.

Make it harder to move
Remove the key and use the steering lock. Consider adding a disc lock or a chain-and-lock combination; where practical, secure the motorcycle to a permanent floor or wall anchor. These physical measures address movement, not concealment or engine starting.

Modellers will also be delighted to hear that the steering column features a metal screw for durability, while synthetic rubber tyres have realistic tread patterns. Decals are included for use with 3 different bodywork colours. Realistic rubber-like tyres with accurate tread pattern. Highly detailed DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Many plated parts included for added realism.
- Supplied in card box retail style packaging, it is an ideal model kit for the keen hobbyist to assemble and paint.
Make it harder to start
An immobilizer checks whether the key carries the correct code before allowing the engine to start. Honda’s H.I.S.S. system, for example, checks a coded chip in the original key against the ECU: a duplicate key with the same shape but without the matching code will not start the engine. Honda summarizes the principle as “No match, no start.”
Honda says H.I.S.S. activates when the key is removed and recommends using additional anti-theft measures. Its listed equipped models are a reference for production models as of March 4, 2014—not a current fitment list. Availability varies by region and country, so check the specifications for the particular motorcycle and market. Honda’s H.I.S.S. explainer describes the system.

Add alerts, recovery support, and secure parking
Alarms may include movement, anti-grab, immobilization, or tracking features; what they do depends on the system. A tracker may help police trace a stolen vehicle, while invisible security marking can help establish ownership and discourage resale. Neither is a substitute for preventing unauthorized access.
Where possible, use secure indoor storage or a well-lit location with people nearby, and combine that choice with physical security. Avon and Somerset Police links UK readers to Secured by Design for approved lock suppliers and asset-marking suppliers.

The New Atlas feature presents the Nomoto as a design concept and does not establish that it reached production. It gives no price, purchase listing, or retail route. On the available information, it should not be treated as a motorcycle a reader can order.
Why motorcycle theft needs more than visual concealment
Concealing a motorcycle can make its model less obvious, but it does not solve every theft risk. The National Insurance Crime Bureau notes qualitatively that motorcycle parts and frames can be altered, reused, and camouflaged more readily than car or truck parts, contributing to lower recovery rates. The cited passage supplies no figure, so it does not support a numerical comparison.
For security, the practical distinction is straightforward: covers hide, locks impede movement, immobilizers impede starting, alarms signal, trackers may assist tracing, and secure storage limits access. These measures complement one another rather than replacing one another.
