Nissan GT-R vs. the World: Why “Godzilla” Still Wins—As a Legacy

The R35 GT-R is no longer a new-car rival, but its distinctive engineering, competition record and 18-year evolution give “Godzilla” a lasting claim to sports-car history.

The Nissan GT-R does not “still win” by being a new car or by proving it is quicker than every modern rival. R35 production ended in 2025. Its case is instead about what one long-running sports car achieved: a distinctive engineering formula, a record of competition success, and 18 years of evolution that made the GT-R a credible supercar rival without erasing its own character.

What “wins” means for a discontinued GT-R

There is no fair, current head-to-head contest between a new R35 and today’s rivals: Nissan says production has ended, and a used GT-R’s condition, model year and modifications vary. “Still wins” makes more sense as a legacy claim, judged by four things: engineering identity, documented competition results, performance development, and longevity.

Those criteria support a strong case for the GT-R’s place in sports-car history. They do not establish that it is faster or better than every Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette or other rival. The available figures here are Nissan’s own specifications and retrospective claims, not an independent, like-for-like ranking.

How the R35 became its own kind of GT-R

A break from the Skyline name

The R34 Skyline GT-R ended production in 2002. Nissan’s heritage account traces the next step through the GT-R Concept in 2001 and GT-R Proto in 2005, before the new Nissan GT-R launched in 2007 without the Skyline name. That distinction matters: the R35 belongs to the GT-R lineage, but it was marketed as a Nissan GT-R rather than a Skyline GT-R. Nissan Heritage Collection

An unusual mechanical layout

The R35’s defining recipe combined a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission. For the 2024 US-market car, Nissan specified a 3.8-liter, 24-valve twin-turbo V6, variable ATTESA ET-S all-wheel drive and a rear-mounted six-speed dual-clutch transaxle. Positioning the transaxle at the rear separates it from the engine and is central to the car’s engineering story; it is not, by itself, proof of superiority over another car. How its power changed over time

The R35’s output rose over its long run, but figures need their model year and market attached. Nissan’s 2025 retrospective says the car launched at 353 kW (480 PS), reached 419 kW (570 PS) from model year 2017, and climbed to 441 kW (600 PS) in NISMO form. Those figures are not interchangeable with every market’s horsepower rating. For example, Nissan listed the 2024 US GT-R at 565 hp and 467 lb-ft. The significance is less a single peak figure than the continued development of a recognizable formula. The R35 began as a high-output, all-wheel-drive performance car and received successive increases in output and more specialized NISMO versions, while remaining the same generation. The exact specification depends on year, trim and market.

What the Nürburgring times do—and do not—show

Nissan’s retrospective gives a striking account of the R35’s development at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The conditions and configurations vary, so these times are a historical progression, not a clean apples-to-apples test or a current ranking against all competitors. Nissan reports:

Year Nissan-reported time Configuration or condition stated by Nissan
2007 7:38 Slightly damp conditions on two corners
2008 7:29 Base-spec car on standard Japan-market tires; dry track
2009 7:26 Further configuration details not stated in Nissan’s retrospective
2012 7:18 Further configuration details not stated in Nissan’s retrospective
2013 7:08.679 GT-R NISMO with track options, including aerodynamic tuning, weight reduction and unique suspension tuning

The 7:08.679 figure is often the headline, but its full qualification is essential: Nissan attributes it to a 2013 GT-R NISMO fitted with track options. It should not be compared casually with a rival’s lap unless the track, timing method, car specification, tires and conditions are also known. These are Nissan-reported times in its 2025 retrospective, not independent measurements. Nissan’s Nürburgring account

Its competition record strengthened the reputation

Nissan’s production-end release points to results across several series and classes: five GT500 class wins and three GT300 class wins in Japan’s SUPER GT; a 2013 Blancpain GT Series Pro-Am class victory; a 2015 Bathurst 12 Hour victory; and five Super Taikyu endurance-series victories. These are meaningful parts of the GT-R’s motorsport identity, but they describe competition cars and class results—not a showroom R35 beating road-going rivals in a direct contest. The figures are Nissan-reported. Nissan’s 2025 production-end retrospective

Why the “world” comparison needs limits

A proper GT-R-versus-rivals comparison would match specific generations and model years, then account for power and torque, drivetrain, transmission, equipment, track-time conditions, competition class and original market price. The figures available here establish the Nissan side only. They do not support a universal claim that the R35 beats Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette or any other maker’s cars.

That limit does not make the GT-R’s reputation hollow. It means the strongest case is not a sweeping performance ranking. It is that Nissan built a distinctive sports car, developed it over a long period, and backed its image with manufacturer-reported competition results and a memorable Nürburgring story—while retaining a mechanical identity of its own.

Production ended; the nameplate’s future is not confirmed

Nissan says the R35 ran for 18 years, with the final car leaving production in 2025 after 48,000 units. Nissan USA’s product page also labels the GT-R “No Longer In Production.” That makes the R35 a used-car and enthusiast subject, not a new-car recommendation. Nissan’s production-end announcement Nissan USA GT-R page

Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa said, “After 18 remarkable years, the R35 GT‑R has left an enduring mark on automotive history.” He has also said the GT-R “will evolve and reemerge in the future,” while Nissan’s announcement made clear that no precise plan had been finalized at that time. That is an expression of intent, not a confirmed successor, launch date or specification. Nissan’s 2025 announcement and CEO comments

“Godzilla” remains recognizable enthusiast language for the GT-R, but the Nissan sources cited here do not establish who coined the nickname or when. Its origin should not be stated as settled fact on this evidence.
