Lucid’s “early hiccups” referred to software work and a supplier bottleneck for the Gravity SUV’s head-up display (HUD), not a published defect rate for customer vehicles. On May 6, 2025, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said Lucid made the HUD optional while it worked through the supply problem and slowed the rollout of showroom and test-drive vehicles until they met the company’s expected standard. A separate second-row seat supplier issue later disrupted Gravity deliveries for 29 days in Q1 2026, according to Lucid.
What Lucid meant by “early hiccups”
On Lucid’s May 6, 2025, first-quarter earnings call, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff described both software work and a head-up-display issue: “It is true that we had some technical issues that we had to overcome around software, but also on the topic around the HUD, the head-up display.” The call transcript records his remarks; TechCrunch’s May 7 report described their implications for the Gravity’s early rollout.

Winterhoff said a supplier was not ramping up HUD supply quickly enough. Lucid separated the HUD from the technology package and made it optional while addressing the constraint. The company continued deliveries; the change was a way to manage the supply issue, not evidence that every Gravity had a faulty display.
Winterhoff called the launch period “some hiccups,” adding, “I think this is absolutely normal in the beginning of launching a vehicle.” That was the interim CEO’s characterization, not an independent assessment of vehicle quality or a measure of how many owners experienced problems.

Why showroom and test-drive availability was slowed
Lucid said it was holding back on placing more vehicles in studios and test-drive fleets until the vehicles met its expected customer standard. Winterhoff put the trade-off plainly: “We’d rather push it out a few days or weeks, rather than putting a half-baked product in front of the customer.” The explanation concerned the timing and readiness of vehicles made available for customer encounters; it does not establish the condition of every vehicle already delivered.
A separate supplier interruption affected deliveries in 2026
Lucid later reported a distinct issue involving a supplier’s second-row seats. In its April 3, 2026, production and deliveries update, the company said the quality problem disrupted Gravity deliveries for 29 days during Q1 and said it had been addressed. Lucid’s update does not describe this as the same problem as the 2025 HUD supply bottleneck.
In its May 5, 2026, Q1 results, Lucid said the seat issue significantly affected Gravity deliveries in February. It reported 5,500 vehicles produced and 3,093 delivered during the quarter, figures for Lucid as a whole—not Gravity-specific production, deliveries, or quality statistics. The Q1 results release also said the company’s reported sales performance in March increased 14% compared with March 2025; that comparison is not a measure of vehicle quality.
What the later company updates do—and do not—show
On August 4, 2026, Lucid announced an operational reset that included a focus on customer experience and quality. The company reported Q2 production of 4,774 vehicles and deliveries of 3,953, again company-wide totals rather than Gravity figures or a quality measure. Lucid’s Q2 update provides broader company context, but does not establish the condition of every Gravity or confirm that every earlier concern was resolved.

For historical scale, Lucid’s February 24, 2026, full-year results reported 15,841 deliveries in 2025 and revised its production total to 17,840 after determining that 538 vehicles had not completed internal validation procedures required for production classification. Those are company-wide figures, not a Gravity defect count. The full-year release explains the production reclassification.

The documented events are two different supplier-related challenges at different stages: a HUD supply ramp-up issue during the 2025 launch period, alongside software work, and a second-row seat supplier quality issue that interrupted deliveries in Q1 2026. Lucid’s comments and releases describe specific launch and production impacts; they do not provide an independent, fleet-wide assessment.
