The Nissan GT-R timeline runs from the 1969 C10 Skyline 2000GT-R to the R35, released in 2007 as the standalone Nissan GT-R. The Skyline GT-Rs are the C10, C110, R32, R33 and R34; the R35 dropped the Skyline name. Dates below identify Nissan-reported launches or market-specific availability, not a single globally consistent set of model years.
What are the Nissan GT-R generations?
Nissan’s history covers six GT-R generations: five Skyline GT-Rs followed by the R35 Nissan GT-R. The model-year distinction matters: a generation’s Skyline launch date may differ from the GT-R variant’s launch, and availability ranges can be specific to a market.
| Generation | GT-R year or availability | Name | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| C10 | 1969 | Skyline 2000GT-R | S20 1,989 cc inline-six; touring-car-oriented model |
| C110 | 1973 | Skyline GT-R (“Kenmeri”) | GT-R version available only for 1973, according to Nissan’s North American history |
| R32 | 1989 | Skyline GT-R | RB26DETT 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six; ATTESA E-TS electronically controlled torque-split four-wheel drive |
| R33 | January 1995 | Skyline GT-R | The Skyline generation launched in August 1993; its GT-R followed later |
| R34 | 1998–2002 availability in Nissan USA’s summary | Skyline GT-R | Nissan’s corporate timeline dates the R34 Skyline launch to May 1998 |
| R35 | Released in 2007 | Nissan GT-R | Standalone GT-R name; early model used the VR38DETT 3,799 cc twin-turbo V6 |
The dates reflect the distinctions in Nissan’s heritage collection and North American history. They should not be read as a complete worldwide model-year table.
How did each GT-R generation fit into the timeline?
C10 Skyline 2000GT-R (1969)
Nissan identifies the C10 as the first-generation GT-R. It was developed as a high-performance touring car and used the S20 1,989 cc inline-six. Nissan says its works team recorded 52 victories before withdrawing in October 1972. Nissan Motor Corporation’s C10 heritage entry

C110 Skyline GT-R “Kenmeri” (1973)
The C110 GT-R was a short-lived return after the C10. Nissan’s North American history gives 1973–1977 as the C110 Skyline’s production span, but says the GT-R version was available only for 1973. It was the final GT-R-badged Skyline before the name returned with the R32 in 1989. Nissan USA’s Skyline GT-R history
R32 Skyline GT-R (1989)
The R32 brought back the GT-R name after a 16-year gap. Nissan specifies an RB26DETT 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six and ATTESA E-TS, an electronically controlled torque-split four-wheel-drive system. In Japan Touring Car Championship competition, Nissan reports 29 victories and no defeats across four seasons, 1990–1993. Nissan Motor Corporation’s R32 heritage entry

R33 Skyline GT-R (January 1995)
Use January 1995 for the R33 GT-R’s launch, rather than 1993: Nissan dates the ninth-generation Skyline’s launch to August 1993, while the GT-R version followed in January 1995. Nissan Motor Corporation’s R33 heritage entry
R34 Skyline GT-R (1998–2002 in Nissan USA’s summary)
Nissan’s corporate timeline places the R34 Skyline launch in May 1998. Nissan USA describes the R34 GT-R as available from 1998 to 2002; that range is the North American summary, not a universal model-year statement. Nissan Motor Corporation’s R34 heritage entry · Nissan USA’s Skyline GT-R history

R35 Nissan GT-R (released 2007)
After the R34, Nissan released the R35 in 2007 as “NISSAN GT-R,” without the Skyline name. The early R35 used the VR38DETT 3,799 cc twin-turbo V6. Nissan’s available historical material here does not establish one definitive final production date or final model year across all markets. An archived Japanese R35 page covering March 2024 through September 2025 does not, by itself, establish either endpoint. Is the R35 a Skyline GT-R?
No. The C10, C110, R32, R33 and R34 are Skyline GT-Rs. The R35 is the following generation, sold under the Nissan GT-R name without “Skyline.” Nissan’s history marks the change with the R35’s 2007 release. Nissan Motor Corporation’s heritage collection

Why do GT-R dates vary by source or market?
“Year” can mean a model’s launch, the GT-R variant’s launch, or the years it was available in a particular market. The R33 makes the difference especially clear: the Skyline generation launched in August 1993, but the GT-R arrived in January 1995. Likewise, Nissan USA’s 1998–2002 R34 availability range is explicitly a North American summary. The cited histories do not provide a complete, consistently defined global model-year table for every generation, nor a definitive final R35 model year for every market.
