Nissan ended production of the R35 GT-R at its Tochigi plant on August 26, 2025. The last car was a Japan-bound Premium edition T-Spec in Midnight Purple. That closes an 18-year run for this generation—not the full GT-R lineage, and not necessarily the nameplate forever.
When did Nissan stop making the GT-R?
Nissan announced on August 26, 2025, that the final R35 GT-R had rolled off the production line at its Tochigi plant. Japan was the final sales region. Nissan counted approximately 48,000 R35s produced and sold over the generation’s lifecycle, which began with the model’s 2007 launch. Nissan’s announcement describes the production run as 18 years.
What was the last R35 GT-R?
The final R35 was a Premium edition T-Spec painted Midnight Purple, destined for a customer in Japan, according to Nissan. The T-Spec grade’s equipment includes dedicated bronze RAYS forged aluminum wheels; Nissan lists these as a feature of the model grade, not as a one-off feature of the individual final car. Did the GT-R begin at Tochigi?
Tochigi is where the last R35 was built, but it is not the starting point of the entire GT-R story. Nissan traces the R35’s origin to the GT-R Concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2001; the production R35 debuted in 2007. Nissan also says the R35 was designed with overseas markets in mind, unlike the Skyline GT-R framing in its history. Nissan’s GT-R history sets out that distinction.

The R35’s departure is therefore the end of a generation that carried the GT-R into a new era, rather than the end of every car that has worn the badge. Nissan’s profile of Hiroshi Tamura says he helped guide the R35 from its concept phase. Some fans call him the “Godfather of GT-R” or “father of GT-R,” nicknames Nissan reports rather than official job titles. Nissan’s profile of Tamura describes his role and those fan nicknames.
Will the Nissan GT-R come back?
Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa said on August 26, 2025: “To the many fans of the GT-R worldwide, I want to tell you this isn’t a goodbye to the GT-R forever, it’s our goal for the GT-R nameplate to one day make a return.” That is Nissan’s stated goal, not confirmation that a successor has been approved or announced. His statement gave no launch date, powertrain, or other successor specifications.
