Nico Hülkenberg took his first Formula 1 podium at the 2025 British Grand Prix, finishing third for Kick Sauber after starting 19th. The result came 5,593 days after his F1 debut, according to BBC Sport. His reward included a bespoke third-place trophy built entirely from LEGO elements.
How Hülkenberg earned his first F1 podium
The British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on 6 July 2025. Hülkenberg finished third, 34.742 seconds behind winner Lando Norris, after starting from 19th on the grid. It was his first Formula 1 podium in 239 Grand Prix starts. Formula 1’s official race result records the classification, while its race report describes the changing conditions and Hülkenberg’s maiden podium.
The race began in the dry before rain arrived, turning tyre choices and pit-stop timing into pivotal factors. Hülkenberg and Sauber navigated the changing conditions, and he also resisted a late challenge from Lewis Hamilton. The result was a major climb from P19, not simply a product of the weather: the team anticipated rain and timed its stops well, as Hülkenberg explained at the post-race press conference.
Why the wait is described as 15 years
Hülkenberg made his F1 debut at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix. BBC Sport calculated 5,593 days between that debut and his first podium at Silverstone in 2025, describing the achievement as 15 years in the making. The “15-year” framing is rounded; the day count is BBC Sport’s reported interval, not a claim that he had gone exactly 15 calendar years without a podium.

Why Hülkenberg’s trophy was made of LEGO
The LEGO Group created the trophies for Formula 1’s 75th anniversary celebration at Silverstone. The event marked a first for F1: the podium drivers and winning constructor received trophies made entirely from LEGO elements. The designs drew inspiration from the Royal Automobile Club’s British Grand Prix trophy.

Hülkenberg’s third-place trophy was a white build with blue detailing. LEGO says each second- and third-place trophy used 2,298 elements, weighed 1.5 kg and stood more than 43 cm tall. They were smaller than the winner’s trophy, so those specifications should not be confused with the larger first-place build.
LEGO designer Samuel Liltorp Johnson designed the trophies, which seven master builders assembled at the LEGO model shop in Billund. Across all four trophies, the builders spent more than 210 combined hours. The second- and third-place builds also featured miniature LEGO F1 cars based on the LEGO F1 Collectible Race Cars range.

What Hülkenberg said about the trophy
Oscar Piastri teased Hülkenberg at the FIA’s 6 July 2025 post-race press conference, asking how it felt to get a podium trophy “made out of Lego that you can just pull apart.” Hülkenberg replied: “Yeah. I love Lego! It’s good. My daughter can play with it too. You’ve always got to see the bright side. But, you know, a bit of silver or gold would have been nice too, but I won’t complain.”

The trophy was a bespoke event build, and the LEGO Group’s announcement identifies no retail replica. The miniature cars incorporated into the trophy were based on LEGO F1 Collectible Race Cars, a related product range; that connection does not mean Hülkenberg’s trophy itself is sold as a set.
