Yes—current reporting indicates Toyota is considering a gasoline-powered version of the next-generation Corolla. The reported plan is broader than a single drivetrain: depending on the market, the 13th-generation Corolla could offer a conventional gas engine, a new hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a battery-electric model. Toyota has not yet confirmed the engines, trims, prices, regions or production schedule.
A 2027 reveal and 2028 showroom arrival are frequently discussed, but those dates remain forecasts rather than Toyota commitments.
What Toyota has actually confirmed
The next Corolla is still unreleased, and Toyota has not published a final specification sheet. That means reports about engine sizes, battery capacity, fuel economy and launch timing should be read as expectations—not buying specifications.
The strongest public clues are Toyota’s Corolla Concept shown at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, a blurry teaser seen in an NHK documentary, and comments from Toyota designer Lance Scott. Scott told Autocar: “We’re going to reinvent the best-selling car of all time.” The statement signals an ambitious redesign, but it does not confirm a production body, powertrain or market.

Will the next Corolla still have a gas engine?
That is the most likely interpretation of the current reports, but it is not yet an official yes. Coverage from Autoblog and Autocar Philippines describes a multi-pathway strategy in which combustion power remains available alongside electrified alternatives.
Reported gasoline possibilities include a revised 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. Neither engine has been confirmed, and Toyota could use different engines—or offer no gas-only model—in particular countries. “Gas engine included” should therefore be understood as a reported option in the global strategy, not a promise that every market will receive one.
The four powertrain paths being reported
| Possible version | What reporting suggests | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | A conventional engine may continue, with a revised 2.0-liter or turbocharged 1.5-liter mentioned as possibilities. | Engine choice, output, transmission, emissions certification and country availability. |
| Hybrid | A new 1.5-liter hybrid is reportedly under consideration. | System power, battery chemistry, drivetrain layout, trim walk and official fuel-economy rating. |
| Plug-in hybrid | A larger battery and more electric driving range are expected relative to a standard hybrid. | Battery size, electric-only range, charging rate, charge time, incentives and regional allocation. |
| Battery-electric | A fully electric Corolla is part of the reported multi-pathway outlook. | Whether it reaches production, its platform, range, charging hardware, price and launch markets. |
These are reported pathways, not confirmed trims. Toyota may not sell all four in every country, and names or specifications could change before launch.
What the new Corolla may look like
The Corolla Concept and the NHK teaser point toward a sleeker, fastback-influenced silhouette rather than the current sedan-and-hatchback formula alone. The visual clues include sharper character lines, broad or connected lighting and a cleaner, more minimalist cabin.

Online images should be treated carefully. Autoblog has identified its own Corolla renderings as AI-generated illustrations, not official Toyota design images. The concept and teaser establish a direction, not a locked production shape, final dimensions or cargo configuration.
When could it arrive?
Autoblog cites a possible 2027 debut followed by a 2028 showroom arrival. Autocar Philippines also describes a 2027 debut as speculative. Toyota has not announced a reveal date, order opening, production start or delivery schedule, so buyers should not treat those years as commitments.
Even if Toyota reveals the car on that timetable, markets may receive different body styles and powertrains at different times. A country could get a gas or hybrid Corolla first, while a plug-in or electric version arrives later—or does not get offered there at all.
Efficiency: an engineering target, not a rating
Autoblog reports engineering hints of approximately 10% to 20% better hybrid fuel economy than the current Corolla. That is a reported target, not an EPA, WLTP or other certified result. Final consumption will depend on the production vehicle, tires, body style, drivetrain, testing cycle and local certification.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you wait for the next-generation Corolla?
Waiting makes sense if you want choice
- You are interested in comparing gas, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and electric ownership before committing.
- Your current vehicle can reliably cover the time until Toyota publishes specifications and opens orders.
- Design, charging capability or a newer safety and infotainment package matters more than securing a known model today.
Buying the current Corolla may be wiser if certainty matters
- You need a car on a predictable schedule rather than an unannounced launch window.
- You require a particular body style, engine or drivetrain that may not return in your country.
- Local pricing, incentives or dealer inventory make the current model the lower-risk choice.
Do not pay a premium or place a deposit based solely on a rumored 2027 or 2028 date. Wait for Toyota to identify your market, publish specifications and provide an order process.
The questions Toyota still needs to answer
- Which countries will receive each propulsion type?
- Will the gas model be a 2.0-liter, a turbocharged 1.5-liter or something else?
- What body styles and cargo dimensions will be offered?
- What are the hybrid system output and certified fuel-economy figures?
- How much electric range will the plug-in hybrid provide, and what charging equipment will it use?
- Will an electric Corolla reach production, and on what timeline?
- What will each version cost, and which purchase incentives will apply?
- When will reservations, order guides and deliveries begin?
There is currently no official price list, trim list, EPA or WLTP rating, market-allocation announcement or model-specific accessory catalog for the next-generation car.
How to compare versions once specifications are published
- Match the drivetrain to your routine: compare gasoline refueling, hybrid operation, home charging for a plug-in hybrid and charging access for an EV.
- Check usable practicality: compare body style, rear-seat space, cargo volume and any battery-related reduction in storage.
- Use certified numbers only: compare official fuel economy, electric-only range and charging data from the same market and test cycle.
- Calculate ownership cost: include purchase price, incentives, electricity or fuel, maintenance, insurance and expected delivery timing.
- Verify regional availability: a powertrain shown at a global reveal may not be sold by local dealers.
Until those figures exist, ranking one rumored version above another would be speculation.
