The snowy BMW X5 spy photos showed an early prototype of the next-generation model, identified by BMWBlog as the G65. Later spy photos prompted Carscoops to report that the prototype had production-spec headlamps and taillights. BMW has since officially announced the fifth-generation X5, including its powertrain range and planned production dates, so the spy shots are now an early glimpse of a model whose broad identity is public.
What the snowy BMW X5 spy photos showed
BMWBlog published its G65 prototype report on April 2, 2025, with a gallery showing the vehicle in snow. The outlet identified it as the next-generation X5; the images and identification are spy-photo reporting, not BMW confirmation of the location or every visual interpretation. BMWBlog’s April 2025 report also described new door handles and a plug-in-hybrid prototype.
The snow setting made the prototype’s overall shape visible, but camouflage limited what could be concluded about its final exterior. Those photos should be read as an early sighting, not as definitive evidence of the production vehicle’s finished details.
What Carscoops reported about the production lights
On November 15, 2025, Carscoops reported that a more advanced G65 prototype had production-spec headlamps and taillights. That description belongs to Carscoops’ reading of later spy photos; it was not, at the time, an official BMW specification. The report also discussed the prototype cabin. BMW has now announced the fifth-generation X5
BMW Group’s June 30, 2026 announcement changes the context: the next X5 is no longer entirely secret. BMW describes the exterior as cleaner, more upright and monolithic, with a vertical kidney grille and “double-X” light icons. These are BMW’s descriptions of the announced model, rather than conclusions drawn from the camouflage in the earlier photographs. BMW’s official announcement provides the production-model information.
BMW says the fifth-generation X5 family will span petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions, with hydrogen planned to follow. The “one model, five drives” announcement therefore refers to a broad powertrain strategy, not five versions shown in the snowy photos. BMW has not established local availability or pricing for every variant in the cited announcement.

Powertrains and what BMW has specified
- Petrol and diesel: BMW lists both combustion-engine options within the announced X5 family.
- Plug-in hybrid: A PHEV appeared in earlier prototype reporting; BMW includes plug-in hybrid in its announced lineup.
- Battery electric: BMW will offer the iX5. For the iX5 60 xDrive, BMW gives a provisional WLTP range of 645–845 km depending on equipment, and a provisional maximum charging rate of 460 kW. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results or final figures established here. BMW’s announcement is the source for the stated specifications.
- Hydrogen: BMW says a hydrogen version will follow at a later stage; the announcement does not give a production date or specifications for it.
When BMW plans to start production
BMW’s announced schedule places production of the new X5 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina in August 2026. Production of the iX5 at the same plant is planned to begin in December 2026. BMW states: “Production starts in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, in South Carolina.” These are the company’s announced plans, not confirmation that production has already begun. BMW Group’s June 2026 announcement is the source for both dates.

The most useful takeaway is to separate what the photos suggested from what BMW later confirmed. “Production lights” describes Carscoops’ report on a prototype; BMW’s subsequent announcement supplies the authority for the model’s public design description, powertrains and planned timing.
