Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNeither new nor used is automatically the better value on a tight budget. A used car may cost less to buy, but repairs, insurance, financing and warranty coverage can narrow or erase the difference. A new car may bring higher depreciation and a larger loan, yet a particular new-car offer could still compare favorably with a used alternative. Compare specific vehicles over the same period using written prices, real loan and insurance quotes, condition evidence and expected resale value.
The figures and consumer guidance below are U.S.-focused. They offer a way to compare your candidates, not a universal dollar amount that buying used will save.

What “better value” means on a tight budget
Value is the cost of having a vehicle that meets your needs over the time you expect to own it—not just its asking price or monthly payment. A lower purchase price can be offset by interest, repairs or higher insurance. A higher-priced car can still fit better if it costs less to maintain or retain value, but that needs to be established for the actual vehicles and quotes you are considering.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises adding the vehicle’s upfront cost and features to monthly expenses such as interest, insurance and routine maintenance. For a useful ownership-period comparison, also account for taxes, title and registration, fuel, likely repairs, and the vehicle’s expected resale value. See the CFPB’s car affordability guidance.

Compare the actual candidates over the same period
Choose a realistic holding period—such as the number of years you expect to keep each car—and use the same assumptions for both. Ask for written prices and quotes rather than relying on advertised payments.
- Get the out-the-door price. Ask each seller for a written total including taxes, title, registration and fees. Keep the vehicle price separate from financing and trade-in discussions.
- Compare financing in full. Record your down payment, APR, loan term, total interest and total amount paid. Get a preapproval or offers from multiple lenders where practical, and compare more than the monthly payment.
- Get an insurance quote for each car. Use the actual vehicle and driver details; a general estimate may not reflect your premium.
- Estimate use-based costs. Calculate fuel or charging from your expected mileage, then include routine maintenance and likely repairs. For a used candidate, use service records and an independent inspection to inform the estimate.
- Check warranty coverage. Note what is covered, exclusions, any deductible, and when coverage ends by time or mileage.
- Estimate resale value at the end of your comparison period. Treat it as an estimate, not guaranteed money.
- Check the budget beyond the payment. Compare total ownership-period cost as well as monthly cash flow, and consider whether you can handle an unexpected repair without losing your emergency reserve.
A simple worksheet can keep the comparison consistent:

Do not count a trade-in twice: either treat it as part of the down payment or account for its value separately, not both. CFPB guidance recommends including down payment or trade-in when assessing affordability.

A longer loan term can lower the scheduled payment while increasing the interest paid over the life of the loan. In an illustrative example, CFPB says a $20,000 loan carries $1,498 in interest over three years and $3,024 over six years. Those are example totals, not current personalized quotes or a forecast of what your lender will offer. See the CFPB’s auto-loan financing guidance.

A longer term can also leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer. Ask the lender for the APR, term, finance charge and total of payments, and compare those figures alongside the car’s price. The FTC warns that low monthly payment offers may come with longer terms or higher rates, making the deal more expensive overall. It also advises checking add-ons line by line because they can be costly and may be introduced late in the process. See the FTC’s guide to buying a used car from a dealer.
What a used car’s condition and warranty change
A used car’s lower price only helps if its condition and repair exposure suit your budget. For a dealer sale, read the Buyers Guide and check whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty. If there is warranty coverage, read the written terms for covered systems, duration, exclusions, deductible and who is responsible for repairs. The FTC notes that limited warranties vary and state implied-warranty rules may differ.

Before committing, take these checks in order:
- Read the Buyers Guide and written warranty. Confirm whether the car is sold as-is or with coverage. Get any seller promises in writing.
- Get a vehicle-history report. It may show accident or flood information, but it typically will not reveal mechanical problems.
- Check for open safety recalls. Ask the seller about unresolved recalls and review the vehicle’s records.
- Review service records and test-drive the car. Drive in conditions similar to your normal use.
- Pay a trusted independent mechanic for a written inspection. Ask for a repair estimate and use it as a possible negotiating basis.
The FTC states that “A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.” A diagnostic scanner can be an optional screening aid, but it cannot certify a car’s condition or replace that inspection.

What published cost figures can—and cannot—tell you
AAA’s 2025 U.S. “Your Driving Costs” study estimated average new-vehicle ownership and operating costs at $11,577 a year, or $964.78 a month. The estimate used selected mid-priced, top-selling models and a standardized five-year, 75,000-mile ownership assumption. AAA identified depreciation as the largest cost category, averaging $4,334 a year in that study. These are study estimates, not a quote for your car and not a direct comparison with used vehicles; AAA says actual costs vary by location, driving habits, operating conditions and other factors. See AAA’s 2025 new-car ownership-cost release.

The same study estimated that a pickup averaged $6,402 more annually than a small sedan. That category-level comparison underlines why vehicle size and use matter, but it is not a prediction of the difference between two cars you might buy. Compare the specific vehicle types and your own expected mileage, insurance and fuel costs.
How to make the decision
- A used candidate looks stronger when its documented condition, inspection results, repair estimate, warranty terms and financing offer leave it with a lower expected total cost—and you can manage the remaining repair risk.
- A new candidate may fit better when its actual written price and financing compare well with the used option and the coverage, condition or expected costs better suit your needs. Do not assume that warranty coverage alone makes it a bargain.
- Either option is a poor fit if the payment only works with a term that stretches your budget or if you cannot absorb the likely costs beyond the loan payment.
There is no established universal break-even age or fixed dollar saving for buying used. Make the call using written out-the-door prices, loan offers, insurance quotes, condition evidence and an equal ownership period—not a blanket rule about new or used.
