Toyota’s new Land Cruiser FJ, which began sales in Japan on May 14, 2026, uses a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter 2TR-FE inline-four—not the 4.0-liter V6 found in the earlier FJ Cruiser. Toyota pairs the engine with a six-speed automatic and part-time four-wheel drive. The confirmed specifications here are for Japan; Toyota’s cited material does not establish a U.S. launch or North American powertrain.
What engine does the new Toyota FJ have?
The Japanese-market Land Cruiser FJ is powered by Toyota’s 2TR-FE, a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline inline-four. Toyota rates it at 120 kW (163 PS) and 246 N·m (25.1 kgf·m). It is paired with a 6 Super ECT automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive, according to Toyota’s May 14, 2026 launch announcement and its Japanese performance specifications.
Toyota’s Japanese-market fuel-economy figure is 8.7 km/L under the WLTC test cycle, certified by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It is not a U.S. EPA rating, and the two test systems should not be treated as directly comparable.
Is this the old FJ Cruiser’s engine?
No. Toyota’s historical record lists the earlier FJ Cruiser’s representative engine as the 1GR-FE, a 3,955 cc V6. The new Land Cruiser FJ has a different engine, with four cylinders and 2.7 liters of displacement. Toyota has introduced it under the Land Cruiser FJ name, so describing it as a direct FJ Cruiser revival or saying the old V6 has returned would be inaccurate.

What is known about its chassis and off-road positioning?
Toyota describes the Land Cruiser FJ as a more compact, maneuverable member of the Land Cruiser family, built on a ladder frame. In its launch material, Toyota gives a minimum turning radius of 5.5 m, says the wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than that of the Land Cruiser 250 Series, and states that the departure angle is 15 degrees greater than the 250 Series. These are Toyota’s manufacturer figures and comparisons, not independent test results.
Is the new Land Cruiser FJ coming to the United States?
Toyota has confirmed sales in Japan, which began May 14, 2026. Its October 20, 2025 world-premiere announcement said the Japan launch was planned for around mid-2026; the later sales announcement gives the actual start date. The Toyota material cited here does not confirm U.S. availability or specifications for any version outside Japan, so a North American launch and powertrain remain unconfirmed.

Toyota’s Japanese owner’s manual for Land Cruiser FJ models from 2026.05 onward recommends Toyota Motor Oil SP 0W-20 meeting API SP/RC and ILSAC GF-6A criteria. If 0W-20 is difficult to obtain, the manual says qualifying 5W-30 may be used. Its reference capacity is 5.3 L for an oil-only change or 5.6 L when changing the oil and filter. These instructions are specific to the Japanese-market manual; owners should use the manual applicable to their own vehicle and market.
