The changes were reported in May 2021; they describe historical MY22 offerings, not what is currently orderable or compatible with every S Series machine.
What were the new MY22 S Series combine options?
John Deere’s May 2021 announcements described these six option groups for model-year 2022. The reports do not provide a complete option-code list, prices or exact fitment for every model.
| Option group | What the announcement described |
|---|---|
| Automation | Automation Activation 4.0 with Generation 4 Machine Sync and AutoPath, reported as a factory-installed option. |
| Lighting | LED packages adding forward-facing lights and illumination for the grain tank, row finder, engine and service areas, and unloading auger. |
| Chaffer | A flat-tooth comb chaffer, identified as the new name/configuration replacing the high-performance chaffer. |
| Residue management | An extra-fine cut chopper for S780 and S790; an Advanced PowerCast tailboard with deluxe residue management for soybeans; and a premium residue management system that includes the tough crop kit. |
| Service access | An optional remote grease line for final-drive zerks. |
| Threshing | A Kondex all-crop concave configuration, with Max thresh, small wire and large wire configurations named in the coverage. |
Agriculture.com’s May 24, 2021 report and Farms.com’s May 26, 2021 coverage describe the announcements. They do not establish current ordering availability.
How the automation option was intended to help at harvest
The reported package paired Automation Activation 4.0 with Generation 4 Machine Sync and AutoPath. AutoPath uses guidance lines from earlier field passes, such as planting, to support hands-free navigation at harvest. The stated benefit was helping eliminate guess rows regardless of equipment width. This is the announcement’s description of intended use, not a quantified performance claim.

What the crop-specific hardware was for
Flat-tooth comb chaffer
The announcement said the flat-tooth comb chaffer could make combine setup easier in canola and reduce tailings in weedy harvest conditions. Those are reported use cases, not independent test results.
Residue-management configurations
- Extra-fine cut chopper: Listed for S780 and S790 combines to handle tough straw, with the possibility of eliminating a harrow pass.
- Advanced PowerCast tailboard: Paired with deluxe residue management for soybean harvest. One report spells the name “Advance PowerCast”; check current John Deere literature for the applicable product label.
- Premium residue management system: Described as including the tough crop kit.
Kondex all-crop concave
The Kondex configuration was presented for small-grain growers who also harvest pulse crops. Its stated purpose was to maximize material-on-material threshing and keep the rotor full during high-speed harvesting. The coverage names Max thresh, small wire and large wire configurations but does not specify exact combine-model fitment.

What the service and lighting options changed
LED lighting
John Deere made lighting options from larger X Series combines available on the S Series, according to the announcement. The listed coverage included forward-facing lights and lighting for the grain tank, row finder, engine and service access areas, and unloading auger.
Remote grease line
The optional line brought the final-drive zerks within easier reach, with the stated aim of making servicing more convenient and encouraging regular maintenance. The announcements do not provide retrofit instructions or confirm current availability.

Related front-end equipment updates
The same MY22 coverage included header and transport changes. These are front-end announcements, separate from the six combine-option groups above.
- HDF hinged drapers received a flexible cutterbar and were listed in 35- to 50-foot working widths.
- John Deere announced a new eight-row folding C8F corn head.
- Wing leveling let operators set a draper home position and choose a “smile” or flat lift shape.
- Integrated transport mode converted header gauge wheels for moving the draper between fields.
What to check when comparing an MY22 machine
The announcements are useful for identifying equipment that may be associated with a 2022-model-year S Series combine, but they are not a fitment guide. For a particular machine, confirm its model and year, installed options, crop and residue needs, and compatibility with the intended header or component. For automation, verify the required activation and Machine Sync configuration; for the concave or a grease-line retrofit, confirm the exact part and fitment with a John Deere dealer or parts supplier. The cited coverage does not provide current prices or a complete MY22 option-code table.
