A KTM 990 SMT test mule has reportedly been spotted testing in Europe, with a semi-faired front that stands out for its central projector LED headlamp and flanking daytime running lights. The sighting is not an official KTM launch announcement, and the prototype’s visible details and predicted specifications are not confirmed retail specifications.
What does the reported KTM 990 SMT look like?
Bike Rider Magazine’s April 14, 2026 report describes the test bike as being in near-production form, but that wording is the publication’s assessment of a prototype—not confirmation from KTM that production has begun. Its most distinctive feature is the front: a semi-fairing surrounds a centrally mounted projector LED headlamp, with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on either side. BikeWale described a similar lamp-and-DRL arrangement in its August 2024 reports, along with a tall visor and wide tubular handlebar.
The result looks unusual compared with a conventional naked roadster, while the upright stance and fairing suggest an adventure-bike influence. That is an interpretation of the reported images, not a KTM-stated description of the bike’s intended role.
What the apparent radar unit does—and does not—tell us
The 2026 report also points to what appears to be a front-mounted radar unit. Its presence and purpose are inferred from the images; adaptive cruise control and collision-warning functions are possibilities raised by the reporting, not confirmed equipment. The reported material does not establish which, if any, rider-assistance features the production bike will have.

What engine and performance are expected?
Bike Rider Magazine and BikeWale both attribute a 947cc LC8c parallel-twin engine to the expected 990 SMT. Bike Rider estimated around 120bhp and 103Nm in April 2026. Those are the publication’s estimates, not figures confirmed in a KTM specification sheet.
BikeWale’s August 2024 report cited 128bhp and 103Nm for the engine in the KTM RC R, then speculated that the SMT version could be detuned. The RC R output is not an SMT specification and should not be treated as a direct confirmation of its power.

What chassis and equipment have reports described?
The reports describe a road-focused setup, including 17-inch alloy wheels and road-biased tyres. Bike Rider’s 2026 account also names WP brake calipers, USD (upside-down) front forks and a rear monoshock. BikeWale’s 2024 reporting expected adjustable suspension, dual front discs, a rear disc and dual-channel ABS based on the test bike; those details remain reported expectations rather than a final equipment list.
Earlier reports also forecast a TFT display, smartphone connectivity, ride modes, traction control and switchable ABS. None of those features is confirmed as standard equipment. Taken together, the reported 17-inch wheels and road tyres point toward sporty road and touring use, while the upright posture and fairing give the prototype an adventure-bike look. The sources do not provide a confirmed KTM positioning statement or a production-bike comparison.

When will the KTM 990 SMT launch?
BikeWale’s August 2024 reports forecast a debut in early 2025 or during 2025. Those predicted dates have passed. Bike Rider Magazine’s April 2026 report instead expected a global unveiling later in 2026, but it did not confirm that a reveal had taken place.
As of October 8, 2026, the cited reports do not establish a confirmed unveiling, production start, price or availability in any specific market. Treat the later-2026 reveal as a forecast, not a KTM announcement.
