As of October 8, 2026, official announcements do not confirm a new compact pickup coming to U.S. dealers as a direct rival to the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Hyundai has previewed a future U.S. midsize pickup, while a separate GM–Hyundai compact-pickup program is planned for Central and South America. Neither announcement establishes a new U.S. compact-truck launch.
What new trucks have actually been announced?
The announcements point to two different projects, and neither is a confirmed new U.S. compact pickup. Hyundai’s planned U.S. truck is described as midsize; the GM–Hyundai compact pickup is intended for Central and South America.
Hyundai Boulder Concept: preview of a planned midsize truck
Hyundai unveiled the Boulder Concept at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 2026. It is an SUV-shaped design study, not a production pickup. Hyundai says it previews the company’s first fully boxed body-on-frame architecture and a production midsize pickup targeted for delivery by 2030. The announcement does not provide a production model name, price, engine, towing capacity, or a more precise launch date. Hyundai’s announcement also says future body-on-frame production vehicles are planned to be designed, developed, and built in America using Hyundai-produced U.S. steel; those are company plans, not completed production outcomes.
Hyundai CEO José Muñoz described the concept as a signal of the company’s direction: “The Boulder Concept demonstrates how Hyundai is seeking to give American customers more of what they want.” The statement does not change the announced segment: Hyundai calls the planned pickup midsize, not compact.

GM–Hyundai compact pickup: planned for Latin America
GM and Hyundai announced a five-vehicle co-development program on August 6, 2025. Four vehicles—a compact SUV, car, compact pickup, and midsize pickup—are intended for Central and South America, with launches planned from 2028. The companies said the vehicles for those markets could use internal-combustion or hybrid propulsion. Hyundai leads development of the compact vehicle; GM leads the midsize truck platform. The announcement does not identify a U.S. launch, retail specifications, price, or name for the compact pickup. GM’s announcement therefore supports calling it a real compact-pickup program, but not an upcoming U.S. Maverick or Santa Cruz rival.
GM and Hyundai forecast that their co-developed vehicle program could exceed 800,000 vehicles a year once production is fully scaled. That is a company forecast for the whole program, not a sales result or a forecast for the compact pickup alone. Hyundai separately said the Boulder-related body-on-frame truck is among 36 new Hyundai vehicles planned for North America by 2030; that figure counts vehicles across the product plan, not pickups.

How the announced projects compare with the U.S. compact trucks
The key distinction is not an unannounced engine or a guessed price; it is whether a vehicle is a confirmed U.S. compact retail product at all. The Boulder is a concept preview for a planned midsize truck, and the GM–Hyundai compact pickup is announced for other markets.
| Vehicle or program | Market and status | Timing or price | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Ford Maverick | Current U.S. compact pickup | Ford’s product page listed a starting MSRP of $28,145 on October 8, 2026; price can change | Ford lists it separately from the Ranger. Ford’s Maverick page |
| Hyundai Boulder Concept / planned pickup | U.S. design study previewing a planned midsize body-on-frame pickup | Targeted for delivery by 2030; price not stated by Hyundai | The Boulder is not a production truck. Hyundai’s announcement |
| GM–Hyundai compact pickup | Compact-pickup program for Central and South America; U.S. availability not stated | Program vehicles planned to launch from 2028; price not stated by GM and Hyundai | Name and retail specifications not stated. GM’s announcement |
| 2026 Hyundai Santa Cruz | Current U.S. compact pickup | Current price not established in the cited comparison | Its comparison with the Maverick below is based on a 2025 report, not verified 2026 specifications. |
Ford’s listed starting MSRP is a dated page value, not a guarantee of a transaction price. The cited source does not establish a comparable current Santa Cruz price, so it should not be used to claim which truck is cheaper in 2026.

What separates the Maverick and Santa Cruz?
A June 4, 2025 Associated Press article carrying an Edmunds comparison described the two trucks as different approaches to light-duty utility. In that comparison of the tested model years, the Maverick’s strengths included fuel economy and payload; the Santa Cruz offered higher towing capacity in its turbo configuration and a more comfortable, upscale cabin. These are historical comparison findings, not verified specifications for the 2026 models. Read the AP/Edmunds comparison.
Those differences are useful questions to carry into any future comparison, but they do not predict how the announced trucks will perform. Before judging a new alternative, buyers will need model-specific information on dimensions, payload, towing, powertrain, equipment, and price—not just its segment label or concept design.

What to watch for before calling one a rival
- U.S. availability: Look for an explicit U.S. market and dealer-on-sale announcement, rather than assuming a vehicle announced for another region will arrive here.
- Vehicle class and construction: A midsize body-on-frame truck is not automatically a compact unibody alternative. Size and construction help define how it may suit daily driving and work, but do not establish capability figures.
- Released specifications: Compare official powertrain, payload, towing, bed, and passenger-space figures for the specific production model and model year. Do not transfer specifications from a concept or another vehicle in a corporate program.
- Price and timing: Use dated U.S. pricing and on-sale information. A long-range target such as “by 2030” is not a retail date, and a program-level production forecast is not a model sales forecast.
Bottom line for U.S. buyers
There are announced trucks worth watching, but no confirmed new U.S. compact pickup in these announcements that directly challenges both the Maverick and Santa Cruz. Hyundai’s Boulder points toward a future midsize body-on-frame truck targeted by 2030. GM and Hyundai’s compact pickup is planned for Central and South America from 2028, with U.S. availability unstated. For now, shoppers comparing U.S. compact pickups should treat the Maverick and Santa Cruz as the relevant current options and wait for confirmed market, production, and specification details before counting either announced program as a direct rival.
