A redesigned Hyundai Sonata could debut in South Korea in late 2026, with U.S. sales reportedly expected for the 2027 model year. The anticipated car is described as a squarer, more upright sedan inspired by the 1985 original—but Hyundai has not confirmed the successor, its styling, timing or specifications in the sources available.
What is reported about the next Hyundai Sonata?
Autoblog reported on December 19, 2025, citing reports from Korea, that Hyundai is developing a ninth-generation Sonata associated with the code DN9. The reported timing is a possible late-2026 debut in South Korea, followed by likely U.S. availability as a 2027 model. These are reported expectations, not a Hyundai announcement. Autoblog’s report does not establish a firm reveal date or dealer arrival date.
Hyundai’s official announcements establish that the model revealed in March 2023 was the eighth-generation Sonata; they do not confirm when a ninth generation will arrive. Hyundai’s March 27, 2023 design announcement and March 30, 2023 launch announcement concern that generation.
What might the reported retro design look like?
The report describes a taller, more upright three-box profile with straighter lines and a squarer, 1980s-inspired appearance said to reference the first-generation 1985 Sonata. It connects the expected direction to Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language. No official Sonata-specific successor design or production images are established by the sources cited here.

Hyundai described the eighth-generation car in 2023 as a four-door coupe reflecting its “Sensuous Sportiness” philosophy. The company’s description of the current model highlights features such as a Seamless Horizon Lamp and panoramic curved display; these are details of the current-generation design, not evidence of what the successor will use. Hyundai’s current Sonata design overview provides that context.
Is Hyundai’s 2026 Sonata already the redesigned model?
No. Hyundai USA lists a 2026 Sonata in its current lineup, but that listing is for the car currently on sale and does not confirm the rumored successor as a 2026 U.S. model-year redesign. Hyundai USA’s sedan lineup lists these starting MSRPs:

What is known about the successor’s engines and equipment?
Nothing definitive about the rumored successor’s powertrain or cabin specifications is established in these sources. The Autoblog report’s discussion of hybrid-focused powertrains, software upgrades and other future equipment is speculation, not a confirmed specification list.

For historical context only, Hyundai’s March 2023 announcement described the eighth-generation range as including standard, N Line and hybrid versions for global markets, with 2.5-liter gasoline, 2.5-liter turbocharged and 2.0-liter hybrid powertrains in that then-new lineup. That does not establish what the next Sonata will offer.
