New EV battery boasts 5-min charge time, adding 250 miles of range

BYD’s new EV battery headline refers to a complete Super e-Platform that the company said could add 400 km—about 250 miles of CLTC-rated range—in five minutes. Here is what the 1,000-kW charger, China-market test cycle, vehicle availability and 2026 FLASH Charging update actually mean.

The “New EV battery boasts 5-min charge time, adding 250 miles of range” headline refers to BYD’s Super e-Platform, announced in China on March 17, 2025. BYD said the integrated battery, vehicle and megawatt-charger system could add 400 kilometers—about 249 miles—of CLTC-rated range in five minutes, not an EPA-certified U.S. result.

The distinction between a battery and a charging ecosystem is the key to understanding the headline. The advertised performance depends on a compatible BYD vehicle, a high-rate battery, high-voltage power electronics, thermal controls and a dedicated charger capable of delivering megawatt-level power.

Key takeaways

  • BYD said its 2025 Super e-Platform could add 400 kilometers of range in five minutes using a 10C battery, 1,000-volt architecture, 1,000-amp charging and a 1,000-kilowatt charger.
  • Four hundred kilometers is approximately 249 miles, so the 250-mile headline is a rounded conversion of BYD’s China-market claim, not an EPA-certified U.S. range result.
  • The 2025 claim applies to an integrated vehicle-and-charger system, not to a battery pack operating with an ordinary home charger.
  • The first named Super e-Platform vehicles were the BYD Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, with presales opening in China.
  • BYD’s March 2026 second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging update claimed 10% to 70% charging in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
  • BYD’s charging claims remain manufacturer-reported; the research available here does not establish independent long-term, cold-weather or EPA validation of the original 400-kilometer claim.

What does the new EV battery boast about a 5-minute charge and 250 miles of range?

The headline describes a complete BYD charging platform rather than a battery working alone. BYD combined a high-rate battery with a 1,000-volt vehicle architecture, high-current charging hardware, power electronics, thermal management and a dedicated megawatt charger. The charger, vehicle and grid connection are all essential to the advertised result.

Can an EV really charge 250 miles in five minutes?

Yes, BYD says its specific China-market platform can add about 250 miles of CLTC-rated range in five minutes under suitable high-power charging conditions, but the claim should not be read as a guaranteed real-world or EPA-rated result.

Four hundred kilometers converts to approximately 248.5 miles, which explains the rounded 250-mile wording. BYD’s original figure was 400 kilometers, not a separate 250-mile test result. The five-minute claim also describes the charging performance of the complete Super e-Platform and its compatible megawatt charger, not a battery tested in isolation.

Headline wording What the evidence supports What the wording does not establish
400 kilometers in five minutes BYD’s 2025 claimed addition of about 249 miles of CLTC-rated range in China An EPA-rated U.S. range gain or a guaranteed real-world driving distance
250 miles in five minutes A rounded miles conversion of BYD’s 400-kilometer claim That every BYD EV, public fast charger or home charger can deliver the same result
Two kilometers per second BYD’s description of the platform’s peak range-addition rate A rate sustained throughout the entire five-minute session

The figures also describe different parts of the charging session. Dividing 400 kilometers by 300 seconds produces an average of about 1.33 kilometers per second across the full five-minute window, while BYD’s two-kilometers-per-second statement is a peak-rate description. Charging power normally changes as battery state of charge rises, so peak power and total range added are not interchangeable measurements.

Is BYD’s 250-mile figure real-world or CLTC?

BYD’s 250-mile figure is a rounded conversion of a CLTC-based Chinese-market claim, not an EPA result. Independent reporting has noted that China’s CLTC testing regime is generally more generous than the U.S. EPA method, meaning an equivalent EPA-rated range addition would likely be lower.

Actual range added during five minutes would depend on the vehicle’s efficiency, battery capacity, starting state of charge, battery temperature, battery preconditioning and the power the charger can actually provide. A vehicle that accepts the advertised power for only part of a session will add less range than the headline suggests. Independent coverage of BYD’s 2025 announcement also treated the 250-mile wording as a conversion rather than an EPA-certified result.

What did BYD’s Super e-Platform include?

BYD’s 2025 announcement described a broader powertrain redesign, not merely a new cell chemistry. The main components were a 10C flash-charging battery, a 1,000-volt architecture, charging current of up to 1,000 amps, a 1,000-kilowatt peak charger, next-generation automotive-grade silicon-carbide power chips and a motor capable of 30,000 revolutions per minute.

The electrical figures explain the headline power. In ideal arithmetic, 1,000 volts multiplied by 1,000 amps equals 1,000,000 watts, or 1,000 kilowatts. That is the charging system’s stated peak-power class. It does not mean a vehicle will draw 1,000 kilowatts continuously, because actual delivery depends on the battery, charger, thermal controls and the charging curve.

BYD called the battery a 10C flash-charging battery. The C-rate is a battery charging-rate designation, but the 10C label alone does not tell a driver how many miles will be added. Range depends on the battery’s usable capacity and the vehicle’s efficiency, while the charger and vehicle electronics determine whether the battery can receive the intended power.

Why does the charger matter as much as the battery?

The charger matters because the five-minute performance requires a dedicated high-voltage, high-current charging ecosystem. A battery capable of accepting high power cannot create that power by itself; the charging site must supply it through compatible equipment, a suitable connector, vehicle power electronics and sufficient electrical capacity.

The 2025 Super e-Platform was announced with a 1,000-kilowatt megawatt charger. BYD’s later regional materials describe a different FLASH Charging system capable of up to 1,500 kilowatts through a single connector. The 1,500-kilowatt figure belongs to the 2026 update and should not be retroactively presented as the specification of the original 2025 announcement.

An ordinary residential connection and consumer charging accessory cannot reproduce megawatt charging. Home charging remains useful because a car can replenish energy while parked for hours, but the hardware and electrical service are fundamentally different from a dedicated high-power charging station.

The vehicle application matters because charging performance is not a universal property of every battery carrying the BYD name. The exact battery pack, vehicle electronics, charging connector, software, market configuration and station all have to support the claimed operating conditions.

What changed with BYD’s 2026 Blade Battery and FLASH Charging update?

BYD’s March 5, 2026 announcement shifted the focus from the original range-added claim to a state-of-charge charging window. BYD said its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging technology could charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

Those figures are not the same measurement as adding 400 kilometers of range. The 2025 claim measured an advertised range addition, while the 2026 figures describe the percentage of battery state of charge reached during a session. Without a vehicle’s usable battery capacity and efficiency, the 2026 percentages cannot be converted into a precise number of miles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BYD’s 2026 release also claimed that charging from 20% to 97% at minus 30 degrees Celsius took only three minutes longer than charging at room temperature. That is a manufacturer-reported cold-weather claim, not independent cold-weather validation.

BYD chairperson Wang Chuanfu said, “Our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car.” The statement describes BYD’s strategic ambition; it is not independent evidence that the claimed charging times have been reproduced in ordinary use.

When will BYD FLASH Charging be available?

BYD announced a plan to build 20,000 FLASH Charging stations in China by the end of 2026 and said it intended global-scale deployment by the end of 2026. Those are company roadmap statements, not proof that the network is already broadly available in every country.

BYD identified the DENZA Z9GT as an early European vehicle for the second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging, with a European debut planned for April 2026. Earlier 2025 reporting also described BYD plans for more than 4,000 high-power chargers. The larger 20,000-station figure belongs to the later FLASH Charging roadmap and should not be used to imply that all of those stations were already operating. Associated Press reporting on BYD’s 2025 charging announcement provides additional context on the company’s infrastructure plans.

Is BYD’s five-minute charging available in the United States?

The research does not establish broad U.S. availability of BYD’s exact five-minute charging system, the Han L or Tang L in the United States, or a U.S. network of compatible megawatt chargers. The original announcement concerned China, and the later deployment statements describe China and planned international expansion rather than a confirmed U.S. rollout.

Availability would require more than importing a battery. A U.S. vehicle would need compatible vehicle hardware and software, an approved connector and charging standard, certified charging equipment, suitable sites and enough local electrical capacity. The vehicle would also need a market-specific range rating before a U.S. publication could describe the result as an EPA-rated 250-mile addition.

How should BYD’s charging claim be compared with Tesla Supercharging?

A fair BYD-versus-Tesla comparison cannot be made from peak kilowatts alone. BYD’s 1,000-kilowatt 2025 figure and up-to-1,500-kilowatt 2026 figure are peak system specifications, while the time a driver spends charging depends on the complete charging curve and the vehicle’s operating conditions.

Comparison factor Question to ask Why the answer matters
Peak power What is the maximum kilowatt figure? A high peak does not prove that the vehicle can sustain that power for the whole session.
State-of-charge window Does the claim cover 10% to 70%, 10% to 97% or another range? A five-minute session beginning at a low state of charge is not directly equivalent to a session near full charge.
Range measurement Are added miles based on CLTC, EPA, WLTP or actual driving? Different test cycles and real-world conditions produce different range figures.
Vehicle efficiency How much distance does the vehicle gain from each unit of electricity? Two vehicles receiving the same energy can add different amounts of driving range.
Infrastructure How many compatible stations exist and where are they located? A theoretical charging speed has little value if a driver cannot reach a compatible charger.
Temperature and validation Was the result independently reproduced in cold and warm conditions? Manufacturer claims and independent testing answer different questions about repeatability.

The available evidence supports explaining BYD’s architecture and claims, but it does not provide a model-specific, independently tested Tesla comparison. A credible comparison would need matching state-of-charge windows, test cycles, vehicle efficiency, charger availability, connector requirements, cold-weather conditions, pricing and local service support.

What can a driver use at home instead?

Routine overnight charging is a different use case from megawatt flash charging. A reader may reasonably shop for an electric vehicle charging cable or a Level 2 home EV charger, but neither consumer product should be confused with BYD’s proprietary 1,000-kilowatt Super e-Platform charger or the later up-to-1,500-kilowatt FLASH Charging equipment.

Before buying home charging equipment, verify the vehicle’s connector, the supported charging type, voltage and amperage limits, local electrical requirements and the product’s certification. The available research does not establish which Amazon-listed cable or home charger is compatible with a particular Han L, Tang L or DENZA Z9GT trim in a particular country, so a generic accessory cannot be recommended as a substitute for BYD’s high-power system.

What remains unproven about the five-minute claim?

The research establishes BYD’s published specifications and the important CLTC qualification, but it does not establish independent long-term cycle-life testing for the battery under repeated megawatt charging. It also does not establish independent validation of the minus-30-degree claim or EPA certification for the exact 400-kilometer-in-five-minutes result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those limitations do not make the announcement meaningless. They define what the announcement proves: BYD has presented an integrated battery, vehicle and charging architecture designed for extremely high charging power, and BYD has published aggressive performance targets. They do not prove that every driver will receive 250 miles in five minutes at every station, temperature or battery state of charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BYD’s five-minute EV charging available in the United States?

No broad U.S. availability of BYD’s exact five-minute charging system or compatible megawatt-charging network was established in the available research. BYD’s original 400-kilometer claim concerned China, while later announcements described planned international deployment rather than a confirmed U.S. rollout.

Does the BYD Han L use the new five-minute-charging battery?

The BYD Han L sedan and Tang L SUV were the first vehicles named for the 2025 Super e-Platform, and BYD opened presales for them in China. The available research does not establish whether a specific Han L trim uses the later second-generation Blade Battery or when the model will be sold in another market.

What charger is needed for BYD’s 1,000-kilowatt charging?

The 2025 claim requires BYD’s integrated Super e-Platform and a dedicated 1,000-kilowatt megawatt charger, with 1,000-volt and 1,000-amp charging capability. A normal electric vehicle charging cable or Level 2 home EV charger cannot reproduce that megawatt performance.

Is BYD’s 250-mile five-minute figure EPA-rated?

No. BYD said its system could add 400 kilometers, or approximately 249 miles, of CLTC-rated range in five minutes. The 250-mile wording is a rounded conversion and is not an EPA-certified U.S. range result.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD’s five-minute, 250-mile headline is based on a 2025 claim of 400 kilometers of CLTC-rated range from the China-market Super e-Platform. The result depends on a compatible vehicle and dedicated 1,000-kilowatt charging infrastructure, so it is not an EPA-certified U.S. result or a capability of ordinary home charging. BYD’s 2026 FLASH Charging update is faster on its stated state-of-charge measurements, but its global availability and independent validation remain separate questions.
