The January 1, 2025, Cybertruck explosion outside Trump International Hotel Las Vegas was not a spontaneous Tesla battery failure. The later Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department after-action report describes a deliberate, premeditated vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack carried out by Matthew Alan Livelsberger, who died by suicide. Investigators found fireworks and fuel canisters inside the rented truck, along with evidence of planning and personal and political grievances.
Authorities did not establish that Livelsberger belonged to a terrorist organization or that the incident was operationally connected to the vehicle attack in New Orleans earlier that day. The latest report adds a second important dimension: how police, firefighters, bomb technicians, hotel security, federal agencies, and digital-forensics teams handled a high-profile explosive incident involving an electric vehicle.

What happened at the Trump hotel
At approximately 8:40 a.m. Pacific time on January 1, 2025, Livelsberger drove a rented Tesla Cybertruck into the porte cochere—the covered valet entrance—of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas at 2000 Fashion Show Drive. The vehicle exploded within seconds of being parked.
The blast and ensuing fire killed Livelsberger and injured seven people nearby. Authorities initially characterized the injuries as minor. The hotel suffered little structural damage despite the location of the explosion and the potential for a much larger event.

The Cybertruck had been rented through Turo. Investigators found fireworks, including large firework mortars, and fuel or camping-fuel canisters in the vehicle. Those findings became central to determining that the explosion resulted from materials carried in the truck rather than an unprompted failure of the vehicle’s battery or electrical system.
The driver was identified as Matthew Alan Livelsberger
Authorities identified the occupant as 37-year-old Matthew Alan Livelsberger of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Investigators used material recovered from the vehicle and forensic evidence to establish his identity, including military identification, credit cards, passport information, and later comparison of tattoos using specialized imaging.
The Clark County Coroner reported that Livelsberger died from an intraoral gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a suicide. This determination is separate from the question of why he carried out the explosion, but it explains why investigators treated the incident as both a fatal attack and a suicide investigation.

Livelsberger was an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces soldier who had recently returned from an overseas assignment in Germany and was on approved leave. Investigators and people who knew him described him as a decorated combat veteran who had experienced significant psychological and personal difficulties.
Descriptions of post-traumatic stress and possible traumatic-brain-injury-related problems have appeared in statements attributed to investigators and acquaintances. They should not be presented as an independently confirmed clinical diagnosis unless a medical record establishes one. The public findings establish that authorities were examining his mental health and personal circumstances, not that those issues alone explain the attack.
Evidence showed preparation, not an accidental fire
The investigation reconstructed a trip from Colorado through New Mexico and Arizona to Las Vegas. Tesla personnel assisted investigators with vehicle and route data, including charging-station information that helped establish the Cybertruck’s movements.
Investigators also recovered two notes from a phone. The notes contained personal and political grievances and described the explosion as a “wake up call” about problems in the United States. The existence of the notes helped investigators assess intent, but they did not provide a simple, complete explanation of every decision Livelsberger made.

- Fireworks and fuel containers: Investigators found fireworks, including large mortars, as well as fuel or camping-fuel canisters inside the Cybertruck.
- Digital and vehicle data: Tesla-related route and charging information helped investigators reconstruct the journey to Las Vegas.
- Phone evidence: Digital-forensics personnel accessed phones found inside the vehicle and recovered information relevant to the timeline.
- Written statements: Notes documented personal and political grievances and indicated that the event was intended to attract attention.
- Scene evidence: Investigators collected more than 4,000 photographs and 125 evidentiary items, according to the later LVMPD report.
Nothing in the public findings supports describing the event as a spontaneous Cybertruck fire. Authorities attributed the blast to materials carried in the vehicle. That distinction matters: a fire involving an electric vehicle can create specialized hazards for responders, but the available findings do not say that the Cybertruck’s battery initiated this explosion.

Was it terrorism?
The answer depends on whether the question concerns the operational description of the act or a formal terrorism finding.
In its later after-action report, LVMPD described Livelsberger’s conduct as a deliberate, premeditated attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. The department said the event had the potential to cause mass casualties and extensive structural damage.
That language describes what investigators believed the device and the planned use of the vehicle were capable of doing. It does not establish that Livelsberger acted for or on behalf of a terrorist organization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe FBI’s Las Vegas leadership characterized the incident as appearing to be a tragic suicide involving a combat veteran struggling with PTSD and other issues. Federal investigators reported that they had found no definitive connection to a terrorist organization. The public findings also did not formally designate the incident as a completed act of terrorism.
The most accurate summary is therefore that the act was deliberate and premeditated, but no organizational terrorist connection was established in the public investigation.
Why investigators examined the New Orleans connection
The Las Vegas explosion occurred hours after Shamsud-Din Jabbar killed people in New Orleans in a separate vehicle attack. Investigators examined whether the two incidents were connected because of several similarities: both involved vehicles, both involved a vehicle-rental platform, both occurred on the same day, and both men had military backgrounds.
The FBI reported no definitive link between the incidents. Officials did not identify a connection between Livelsberger and a terrorist organization, and investigators did not announce an operational relationship between the two attacks.

How the emergency response unfolded
The response involved LVMPD, the Clark County Fire Department, Community Ambulance, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Bomb Squad, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, the Clark County Coroner/Medical Examiner, hotel security, and other partners.
The later LVMPD report describes a cautious early approach. Responders used a drone for remote scene assessment, while thermal imaging helped identify possible hotspots and potential hazards before bomb technicians moved toward the vehicle. That combination reduced the need to send personnel immediately into an uncertain scene.
Private-sector security footage also helped investigators establish what happened around the hotel. The report credited hotel security footage, rapid fire and medical response, interagency cooperation, drone use, three-dimensional scene scanning, specialized cameras, and digital forensics as important elements of the investigation.
What the 78-page LVMPD report added
LVMPD released its 78-page after-action report in late 2025, nearly a year after the explosion. It was designed primarily to evaluate the response and identify improvements—not to reopen the public question of motive or announce a new terrorism finding.
The scale of the follow-up investigation was substantial. According to the report, authorities obtained approximately 62 search warrants over about 10 days. The warrants covered the vehicle and its contents, financial records, surveillance footage, social-media accounts, and Livelsberger’s Colorado residence.
Investigators used a Leica RTC360 scanner to create both three-dimensional and two-dimensional documentation of the scene. The report also details the collection and review of digital evidence from phones inside the Cybertruck.
These tools mattered for different reasons:
- Remote assessment and thermal imaging helped responders evaluate a potentially dangerous vehicle before approaching it.
- Three-dimensional scene scanning preserved detailed measurements and spatial information after the scene changed or was cleared.
- Specialized cameras and photographs created a large visual record for investigators and later review.
- Digital forensics helped establish the timeline and examine communications and other relevant data.
- Charging and route records helped trace the Cybertruck’s movements across several states.
What the incident means for electric-vehicle response
For vehicle owners, the most important technical takeaway is also the simplest: the investigation did not find that a Cybertruck malfunction or battery defect caused the blast. The truck was used as a platform for an explosive device made from materials transported inside it.

The report also identified improvement areas involving officer safety, resource management, communications, Incident Command System response, and technology integration.

Those findings should not be misread as evidence that the Cybertruck’s battery caused the incident. They show that an explosive event involving a modern EV may require responders to manage several hazards at once: an unstable or damaged vehicle, possible fire or thermal hazards, unknown contents, electrical systems, evidence preservation, and the risk of secondary danger.
The report’s broader lesson is that vehicle technology changes the response environment even when the vehicle itself is not the cause of the initial event.

| Cybertruck battery | Authorities attributed the explosion to materials carried in the vehicle, not to a spontaneous battery failure. |
| New Orleans relationship | Investigators found no definitive link between the two incidents. |
| Terrorist organization | No connection to a terrorist organization was identified in the public findings. |
| Mental-health history | Claims about PTSD and traumatic brain injury should remain attributed to investigators or acquaintances unless independently documented. |
The bottom line for Cybertruck and EV readers
The new details turn the Las Vegas incident into two related but distinct stories. The first is an intentional, premeditated attack in which a rented Cybertruck was used to transport an explosive device. The second is an emergency-response case study involving a damaged electric vehicle, a busy hotel entrance, a possible secondary hazard, and a complex multi-agency investigation.
The evidence does not support blaming the Cybertruck’s battery for the explosion, nor does it support claiming that the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks were coordinated. The strongest defensible account is narrower: Livelsberger acted alone, carried explosive materials in the vehicle, died by suicide, and left behind evidence of personal and political grievances. Authorities found no definitive terrorist or New Orleans connection.
Support note: Reporting about suicide can be distressing. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger in the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call emergency services.
