What does “nearly half” mean?
Clean Energy Canada commissioned Abacus Data to survey 2,762 Canadian adults aged 18 and older online from September 18 to 23, 2026. The poll found that 48% were “inclined to go electric for their next vehicle.” The result describes respondents’ stated inclination, not the share who own an EV, have chosen a model, or are certain to buy one. The data were weighted to census figures for age, gender, educational attainment and region. The report’s stated margin of error—±1.86 percentage points 19 times out of 20—applies to a comparable probability-based random sample of the same size, not as a measure of the online panel’s actual sampling error. A separate JD Power study offers a different measure: 34% of Canadian new-vehicle shoppers surveyed in March and April 2026 were very or somewhat likely to consider an EV for their next purchase, while 47% were very unlikely. Its sample and question framing differ from Abacus Data’s, so the 34% figure should not be read as a direct contradiction of the 48% inclination result. JD Power’s May 28, 2026 study surveyed 4,938 Canadian new-vehicle shoppers.
Which vehicle choices are potential buyers waiting for?
More Chinese EVs
Among respondents the Abacus Data report describes as likely EV buyers, 42% said they might wait for more Chinese EVs to become available. This is a reported possibility, not a prediction that those respondents will delay or ultimately buy a particular vehicle. The poll identifies availability as a reason some interested buyers may hold off; it does not establish a model-by-model picture of Canadian inventory.

More electric pickups
In the same likely-buyer group, 37% said there were too few electric pickup options. That concern matters most to shoppers whose work, household needs or preferences make a pickup the relevant comparison. The survey does not quantify the number of pickups available or compare their prices, range or delivery times.
Clean Energy Canada director of insights and communications Trevor Melanson characterized the broader market outlook as his assessment, not a poll result: “It’s an interesting year for the EV market: European EV sales are absolutely skyrocketing as U.S. sales lag. Canada, meanwhile, is returning to speed after a slow 2025, largely thanks to the return of federal incentives, though fewer provincial rebates remain. With Chinese EVs finally hitting dealership lots and the release of Ford’s budget electric pickup truck, 2027 could shape up to be a pivotal year for Canadian EV adoption.” The forecast is Melanson’s view; the survey figures above are the measured responses.

How much are buyers aware of lower-priced EVs?
Price remains part of the adoption picture, but the poll also suggests that shoppers may not know what lower-priced options exist. Among respondents, 60% said they were at least somewhat aware of new EV models in the $30,000–$40,000 range, but only 20% said they were very aware. For used EVs in the $20,000–$30,000 range, 52% were aware of options and 14% were very aware. These are awareness measures, not evidence that a particular vehicle is available locally or affordable for a particular buyer.
Before deciding that an EV is outside budget, compare the specific vehicle’s transaction price, the equipment and warranty offered, and the total cost of financing or leasing. For a used EV, also check its battery-health information, remaining warranty, charging compatibility and condition. The cited survey does not provide a Canadian model-by-model price or availability comparison, so it cannot identify which vehicle is the best value for an individual shopper.

What federal support may reduce the upfront cost?
The Government of Canada says its Electric Vehicle Affordability Program offers up to $5,000 in 2026 at the point of sale for eligible light-duty EV purchases or leases. In general, the vehicle must have a final transaction value of $50,000 or less and be manufactured in a country with which Canada has a free-trade agreement. The program page says there is no transaction-value limit for Canadian-made EVs. “Up to” is not a guaranteed discount: the vehicle and transaction must meet program rules, and eligibility should be confirmed before purchase. Some provinces and territories also offer EV-related support, including incentives for new or used vehicles and residential charger installation. The federal overview names Manitoba, Quebec and Yukon as jurisdictions currently offering EV-related incentives; terms and availability vary, so check the current rules for your location rather than assuming a rebate applies. The federal page directs buyers to verify regional terms.

What concerns remain beyond price and model selection?
In JD Power’s 2026 study, Canadian shoppers who were unlikely to consider an EV cited practical concerns: 65% mentioned limited driving distance per charge, 56% cited a lack of charging-station availability, and 54% pointed to inadequate performance in extreme temperatures. These percentages describe reasons reported by that study’s unlikely-to-consider group; they do not show that every EV has the same range or winter performance.

For a real purchase decision, match a specific vehicle to your routine rather than relying on a general range figure. Consider the distance you drive between charging opportunities, whether charging is available at home or work, public charging on regular routes, and how cold weather could affect your trips. If you cannot charge conveniently, the practical trade-off may outweigh an incentive or a lower purchase price. JD Power’s study identifies these as concerns, but does not resolve them for any particular vehicle or route.

A practical way to compare an EV with your next vehicle
- Start with the job the vehicle must do. Decide whether you need a pickup, another body style, particular cargo or passenger capacity, or regular long-distance capability.
- Check actual local options. Ask dealers about vehicles you can buy or order, expected delivery timing and the exact trim. A broad category of EVs is not a substitute for a suitable model in stock or available to you.
- Compare the transaction price after confirmed incentives. Verify federal and regional eligibility for the specific vehicle and purchase or lease. Do not subtract the maximum advertised support unless the transaction qualifies for it.
- Assess charging and seasonal use. Map realistic charging access and consider your typical winter trips, not only a vehicle’s stated range under other conditions.
- For a used EV, evaluate the individual car. Review battery condition, warranty coverage, service history and charging compatibility before comparing it with a new vehicle.
The Abacus Data poll shows substantial interest alongside concerns about choice and awareness. JD Power’s separate findings add range, charging access and cold-weather performance to the issues some shoppers weigh. Whether an EV makes sense depends on a suitable vehicle being available at a price and charging arrangement that work for the buyer—not on the headline percentage alone.
