Nearly 20 EVs are disappearing from U.S. showrooms in 2026—but the next generation could be better

EV changes in 2026 include canceled programs, model-year pauses, production ends and future U.S. sales restrictions. Here is what each status means for buyers.

“Disappearing” covers several different things in the U.S. EV market: some models are being canceled before launch, some are ending production, and others are paused for a model year or being sold only while inventory lasts. The “nearly 20” figure is a roundup-style estimate, not a standardized count of vehicles simultaneously leaving showrooms. Here are the confirmed examples, what each change means, and what automakers say is coming next.

What EVs are being discontinued or changing in 2026?

The examples below do not all represent permanent discontinuations. A model-year gap, an inventory sell-through, and a canceled pre-production program have different consequences for shoppers. Timing and availability refer to the U.S. unless noted.

Vehicle or program Status and timing What it means for shoppers
Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX Honda canceled all three North American EV programs on March 12, 2026, before they became showroom products. These planned models will not launch as announced. Honda said producing and selling them in the current business environment would likely create further long-term losses.
Ford F-150 Lightning, current generation Ford said in a December 15, 2025 SEC filing that it would end production of the current-generation battery-electric pickup. Check local dealer inventory for any remaining trucks; the filing does not make a future product the same vehicle. Ford’s next announced pickup direction is range-extended, not the same all-battery-electric F-150 Lightning.
Ford planned full-size electric pickup and commercial electric vans Ford’s December 2025 filing also canceled three planned EVs, including a full-size pickup and commercial vans. These were future programs, not models being removed from dealer lots. Ford cited market challenges and said the EV business lacked a long-term path to profitability without strategic changes.
Hyundai Kona Electric Hyundai paused the Kona Electric for the 2026 model year; Cars.com reported the company planned production for the 2027 model year. A skipped model year is not, by itself, proof of a permanent cancellation. Confirm current production timing and dealer availability with Hyundai or a local retailer.
Kia Niro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Kia confirmed the PHEV was discontinued in the U.S. for 2026. This change applies to the plug-in hybrid version, not the whole Niro range: the hybrid and battery-electric Niro versions remained.
Volkswagen ID. Buzz Volkswagen said the ID. Buzz would not be offered for the 2026 model year and was expected to return for 2027, according to TechCrunch. This is a planned model-year hiatus, not a confirmed permanent end. The expected return is a company plan, not a guarantee of current availability.
Nissan Ariya Nissan would not produce a U.S. 2026 model-year Ariya, TechCrunch reported. No 2026 model-year production does not establish that the nameplate is permanently canceled. Check Nissan’s current model information and dealer inventory before treating one as available.
Polestar vehicles Polestar reported that U.S. authorities declined authorization to sell its vehicles from model year 2027 onward. The company expected to sell through existing U.S. inventory before ceasing new-vehicle sales. This is a future U.S. sales restriction, not a global discontinuation. Polestar said it would support existing customers; availability during the inventory transition depends on what remains in stock.

These cases help explain why roundups produce different totals: one may count only models ending production, while another may include canceled plans, paused model years, individual powertrains, inventory transitions, or restrictions on future sales. There is no common authoritative method behind the “nearly 20” figure, so it should not be read as a precise count of EVs vanishing from U.S. dealer lots at once.

Why are automakers pulling back from some EVs?

There is no single explanation that fits every decision. Honda attributed its March 2026 cancellations to declining EV demand, competitive pressures, current business conditions, and expected losses. In its announcement, Honda said it had determined that starting production and sales of the three models “in current business environment where the demand for EVs is declining significantly would likely result in further losses over the long term.” That is Honda’s stated rationale for its own programs.

Ford’s December 2025 SEC filing described market challenges and the company’s conclusion that its EV business did not have a long-term profitability path without strategic changes. These company-specific explanations should not be collapsed into a claim that every model was dropped for the same reason.

The U.S. market data shows a shift, not an end to EV sales. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that battery-electric vehicles represented 6% of U.S. new light-duty vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 7% in the second quarter of 2025; the EIA attributed the estimates to Omdia. Hybrid electric vehicles reached a record 16% share in Q2 2026. The EIA also reported that the federal clean-vehicle credit expiration followed the September 30, 2025 acquisition cutoff. These figures provide context, but do not establish that credit expiration alone caused any automaker’s decision.

What does “disappearing” mean for a buyer?

Canceled before launch

A canceled program such as Honda’s 0 SUV, 0 Saloon, or Acura RSX never became a production vehicle to shop for. An announcement about a future concept or program should not be treated as an orderable car unless the manufacturer confirms a production model and availability.

Production ending

When a current generation ends production, remaining examples may still be sold, but availability depends on dealer stock. A production decision also does not automatically mean the manufacturer has announced a direct successor with the same powertrain or body style.

Skipped model year or temporary pause

The Kona Electric and ID. Buzz illustrate why a missing model year is not conclusive evidence of permanent cancellation. Model-year plans can change, so verify the automaker’s latest information rather than assuming a vehicle is either available now or gone for good.

Inventory runout or sales restriction

For Polestar, the reported change concerns authorization for future U.S. model years and an expected transition through existing inventory. That is different from a worldwide end to the brand’s vehicles, and it does not mean every U.S. model is immediately unavailable.

Are any next-generation EVs still on the way?

Yes, but future announcements are selective and should not be mistaken for cars available today. Nissan’s July 2025 North American product announcement described a redesigned LEAF with a NACS charging port and aerodynamic and EV-architecture improvements, alongside plans for later EV SUVs. The company’s statements describe intended products and timing that may change; they do not make those vehicles current showroom options.

Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier said, “North America is a key market, and we are taking quick actions to get us back to growth and set the stage for the exciting products to come.” Nissan’s plans show that one model-year withdrawal, such as the Ariya’s absence for 2026, does not necessarily mean the automaker is leaving EV development.

Honda’s March 2026 announcement points in a different direction: it canceled three planned EVs and said it would reassess resources and strengthen its hybrid business. That is not evidence that every canceled model has a direct successor. More broadly, a next-generation plan may improve design, charging access, or vehicle architecture, but its promised launch and specifications remain subject to change until the automaker confirms production and sales details.

Should you buy an EV now or wait?

Base the decision on a vehicle you can actually buy and the needs it meets—not on a rumored replacement or a broad headline count. A discontinued or paused model may still be a sensible purchase if a specific vehicle is in stock, its price and equipment suit you, and the manufacturer’s service and warranty terms work for your ownership plans. A future model may be worth waiting for if its confirmed features matter to you, but an announced product is not a substitute for current availability.

  • If you need a car soon: Check manufacturer inventory tools and local dealers for the exact model year and powertrain. Ask whether the quoted vehicle is physically available, incoming, or only listed as a previous model year.
  • If a model is paused: Confirm whether the automaker has stated a return year and whether that plan has been updated. Do not assume the next model year is already orderable.
  • If you are considering a model nearing the end of sales: Compare the actual vehicle’s price, equipment, warranty, service access, and charging needs with alternatives currently on sale. The model’s status alone does not establish whether it is a good or bad buy.
  • If you are waiting for a next-generation EV: Separate announced features from confirmed specifications, launch timing, and retail availability. Nissan’s future LEAF and EV SUV plans are company announcements, not proof that a vehicle can be purchased today.
  • If incentives affect your budget: The IRS says federal new, used, and qualified commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, subject to a transition rule for qualifying vehicles acquired on or before that date. Check the IRS guidance for eligibility and the transition rule rather than assuming a credit applies.

How to check whether your EV model is being canceled

  1. Identify the exact version. Write down the model year, trim, and powertrain; a change to a plug-in hybrid does not necessarily affect the battery-electric or conventional hybrid version.
  2. Check the automaker’s current model-year lineup and newsroom. Look for a production-end announcement, a model-year pause, a cancellation, or a stated return plan. These terms indicate different things.
  3. Verify local availability directly. Ask a dealer whether a vehicle is in stock, in transit, orderable, or only a prior-model-year listing. Inventory can change independently of a product announcement.
  4. For a future U.S. sales restriction, check the market and model year. A restriction on future U.S. sales does not automatically mean a global discontinuation or an immediate end to support for current owners.
  5. For ownership questions, confirm support terms with the manufacturer. Production or sales changes alone do not establish a specific warranty, parts, or service outcome.
