Gasoline-only vehicles accounted for 49% of global new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, according to Mobility Global data reported by Nikkei and summarized by Electrek. The figure is described as the first time the category has fallen below half. It is a half-year result, not a final full-year 2026 share, and it does not mean that fewer than half of new vehicles had any kind of combustion engine.
What does the 49% figure measure?
The reported 49% is the share of global new-vehicle sales attributed to gasoline-only vehicles during January through June 2026. Electrek says the figures come from Mobility Global data first reported by Nikkei. The underlying Nikkei page was not independently available for review, so the result is best described with that attribution rather than as an independently audited figure. Electrek’s report
The comparison point is 2021, when gasoline-only vehicles represented 73% of global new-vehicle sales in the same reported series. That is a 24-percentage-point decline between the two reported periods; it should not be read as a complete accounting of what powertrains make up the remaining 51% in 2026.
Does this mean fewer than half of new cars have an engine?
No. “Gasoline-only” is narrower than “vehicles with an internal-combustion engine.” The reported story separates hybrids and plug-in hybrids from the gasoline-only category, and it also distinguishes diesel vehicles. As a result, the remaining 51% is not synonymous with electric vehicles: it can include other powertrain categories, including vehicles that still use an engine.

Definitions also differ across sources. The International Energy Agency’s 2026 powertrain chart puts conventional internal-combustion cars and mild hybrids in its ICEV category, while full hybrids appear under HEV. That broader ICEV series cannot be compared directly with the 49% gasoline-only figure as though the categories were identical. The IEA labels its 2026 sales values as estimates based on market trends through the first half of the year. IEA global car sales by powertrain chart
How does the figure compare with electric-car sales?
The IEA provides useful context, but its electric-car figures measure a different category and sometimes a different period or scope. In its 2025 report, the IEA said more than 20 million electric cars were sold in 2025, representing 25% of the overall car market. For that report, “electric cars” means battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This 2025 full-year figure is not the complement of the gasoline-only share reported for the first half of 2026. For the first half of 2026, the IEA reported electric cars at 24% of global car sales, while global car sales were down around 5% year over year. Its estimate for the full year puts electric cars at 29% of total worldwide car sales. The 24% is a half-year reported share; 29% is an estimate, not a final full-year result. Neither should be added to or subtracted from the 49% gasoline-only statistic because the sources use different categories and may differ in scope. IEA Global EV Outlook 2026, executive summary
The IEA’s longer-run figures point to a wider shift across powertrains: it put the combined share of electric and hybrid cars at around 30% of total car sales in 2024, and said global sales of pure internal-combustion-engine cars had fallen 30% from their 2017 peak by 2024. Its executive summary describes the change this way: “Recent growth has been exclusively driven by sales of electric and hybrid cars, which made up around 30% of total car sales in 2024, while global sales of pure internal combustion engine (ICE) cars peaked in 2017 and have since fallen by 30%.” IEA Global EV Outlook 2025, executive summary

What can be concluded—and what cannot?
- Established by the reported series: gasoline-only vehicles made up 49% of global new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, compared with 73% in 2021.
- Not established by that figure alone: that fewer than half of new vehicles had any combustion engine, or that the other 51% were all electric.
- Important for comparisons: keep the period, vehicle scope, powertrain definition, and whether a figure is observed or estimated attached to every percentage.
