National Highways is evaluating four Hyundai IONIQ 9 electric SUVs for Traffic Officer work on England’s motorways and major A-roads. Hyundai says the vehicles have been converted for frontline use, but the trial is still underway: no performance results or decision on a further purchase have been announced.
What the IONIQ 9 trial involves
Hyundai Motor UK announced on 21 September 2026 that it had supplied four seven-seat IONIQ 9 SUVs to National Highways for an operational evaluation. The agency will assess their suitability for frontline duties, integration of required equipment and charging performance. Hyundai says the vehicles are intended to support National Highways’ work with zero tailpipe emissions while in operation. Hyundai’s announcement does not give an end date for the evaluation or report its findings.
These are National Highways Traffic Officer vehicles, not a police fleet trial. Traffic Officers support the management of incidents and traffic on England’s strategic road network; the announcement does not say the IONIQ 9s are being tested by police.
How the SUVs were converted for duty
Richell Vehicle Conversions (RVC) adapted the IONIQ 9s with National Highways livery and high-visibility decals, warning equipment, communications and CCTV-related hardware. A dedicated 240Ah lithium auxiliary battery, electrically separate from the vehicle’s traction battery, powers the emergency warning system.

The conversion description identifies the installed equipment, but Hyundai’s announcement does not quantify how much space it occupies or how it affects vehicle range.
IONIQ 9 specifications—and what they do not prove

These are manufacturer specifications, not trial results. They do not establish the converted vehicles’ operational range, charging downtime or usable load capacity in service. The trial announcement provides no measured figures for those outcomes.

Will National Highways buy more?
Not yet, based on Hyundai’s announcement. Further purchases were under consideration during 2026, subject to the trial outcome. That is not a confirmed order, and no completed evaluation or follow-on fleet decision has been reported in the cited release.

The questions that matter are operational: how far the converted SUVs travel on their actual duty cycle, how charging fits around shifts, whether the warning and communications systems work reliably together, and how much practical cargo capacity remains. The public announcement says these areas are being evaluated but does not publish answers or compare the IONIQ 9 with another fleet vehicle.

Hyundai & Genesis UK President Ashley Andrew described the trial as demonstrating the vehicle’s capability in demanding real-world roles. That is the manufacturer’s view, not an independently reported finding from National Highways.
