NASCAR has shown off a fully electric race car—but it has not announced that its top series is going electric. Revealed with ABB in July 2024, the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype is a technology demonstrator built with Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. Its published specifications include three motors, all-wheel drive and up to 1,000 kW of peak power.
What NASCAR revealed
The ABB NASCAR EV Prototype was unveiled at the Chicago Street Race on July 6, 2024. NASCAR developed it with ABB and its manufacturer partners Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota as an exploration of electrification, not as a production car or a replacement for the Cup Series car. Its body is a generic crossover utility vehicle (CUV) shape rather than a particular Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota model.
The concept combines electric components with familiar NASCAR-derived hardware. NASCAR describes a flax-based composite body mounted on a modified Next Gen chassis, with steering, suspension, brakes and wheels derived from the Cup Series car.

NASCAR said the all-wheel-drive layout and regenerative braking made the concept suited to road courses and short ovals. That is the design rationale NASCAR gave; it is not a published result from a race or a controlled performance comparison. The launch information does not state the car’s range, race duration, charge time, mass or lap times.

Is NASCAR switching to electric racing?
The 2024 reveal did not announce an electric NASCAR series. In a report dated July 10, 2024, NASCAR said there was “no series on the horizon” and “no concrete plan” for what electrified NASCAR racing might look like. Those remarks describe the situation at that time; they do not establish NASCAR’s plans in 2026.
In that same report, NASCAR senior vice president and chief racing development officer John Probst said, “If you look out across the landscape, one thing that’s for certain is that change is accelerating all around us,” and, “We, from a NASCAR perspective, want to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to where our future is going.” He discussed considering combustion, sustainable fuels, hydrogen and electrification, including hybrid approaches. The comments describe exploration of different technologies, not a decision to abandon combustion. NASCAR’s July 10, 2024 report provides the historical context.

How the 2024 prototype differs from Chevrolet’s 2025 EV.R
Chevrolet introduced a separate prototype, the Blazer EV.R NASCAR, in February 2025. Its reported specifications and purpose should not be mistaken for those of the 2024 ABB NASCAR EV Prototype.

The figures come from different manufacturers and announcements, so they are not a controlled comparison of performance. Chevrolet’s 2025 announcement does not make the EV.R a production Blazer. GM executive director of global motorsports competition Eric Warren said the company would continue racing its V8 technology in NASCAR for years while seeking ways to transfer learning to road cars, particularly as Chevrolet expanded its consumer EV lineup. Chevrolet’s February 2025 announcement covers that separate prototype.

NASCAR’s operational targets are separate from the car
NASCAR said in 2024 that it aimed to reduce its own carbon footprint to zero across core operations by 2035 and source 100% renewable electricity at owned tracks and facilities by 2028. These are organizational targets, not evidence that either goal has been achieved. They concern NASCAR’s operations and do not establish the lifecycle emissions of the prototype or its battery.
