The Mustang GTD’s famous “second lap” was a 6:52.072 Nordschleife run in 2025—but Ford has since gone quicker with a different version. On March 24, 2026, a pre-production Mustang GTD Competition driven by Dirk Müller recorded 6:40.835. That is faster than the official Corvette ZR1X and ZR1 times, but the results span different dates, drivers, vehicle variants and record classes, so they are not a controlled head-to-head test.
Mustang GTD and Corvette ZR1 Nürburgring lap times
The Nürburgring’s official record list gives the following Nordschleife times. Each attempt covers the full 20.832-kilometre course, uses a flying start and predefined timing points, and is confirmed, recorded and published by the circuit. The circuit has officially documented record attempts since 2019. Nürburgring record list and timing information
| Vehicle | Lap time | Date and driver | Official category |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang GTD Competition | 6:40.835 | March 24, 2026 — Dirk Müller | Pre-production/prototype |
| Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X | 6:49.275 | June 24, 2025 — Drew Cattell | Pre-production/prototype |
| Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 | 6:50.763 | June 24, 2025 — Brian Wallace | Pre-production/prototype |

What the “second lap” means—and what changed afterward
The 2025 Mustang GTD improvement
The headline’s “second lap” refers to the original GTD’s 6:52.072 result, Ford’s improved run after an earlier attempt. Ford said it reviewed that earlier lap over the winter and revised chassis tuning and torsional rigidity, suspension hardware and alignment, aerodynamics, powertrain calibration, ABS and traction control, and the active spool valve. Chief program engineer Greg Goodall described simulator work and further Nürburgring testing as part of the process. These are Ford’s descriptions of its development work, not an independent assessment. Ford’s 2025 GTD lap account

The later GTD Competition
The 6:40.835 result belongs to the GTD Competition, not the original road-going GTD configuration. Ford lists revised hardware and aggressive tuning aimed at output above the original GTD’s 815 hp, along with changes including rear-wing revisions, front dive planes, rear carbon-fiber aero discs, high-performance tires, magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats and a lighter damper system. Ford does not state a final GTD Competition horsepower figure in that account, so its targeted output should not be presented as a confirmed rating. Ford’s GTD Competition account
Ford also reports that engineer Steve Thompson drove a GTD Competition lap of 6:49.337. Ford says Thompson had driven the Nürburgring fewer than 40 times; that detail is Ford’s characterization of his experience, not a basis for comparing driver skill across the separate attempts. Why these times are not a direct Mustang-versus-Corvette test
The headline comparison is useful as a snapshot of official lap records, but it has important limits:
- Different GTD variants: the 6:52.072 Mustang GTD is listed in the production sports car category; the quicker 6:40.835 GTD Competition is listed as pre-production/prototype.
- Different Corvette classification: both Corvette times are in the pre-production/prototype category. GM says the cars are not sold in Europe, which is why they are classified that way; it describes the cars as U.S. production-spec vehicles fitted with Nürburgring-recommended safety equipment: a roll hoop, full-containment seat, fire extinguisher and six-point harness.
- Different drivers and dates: Müller set the Ford Competition time on March 24, 2026. GM’s vehicle-dynamics engineers Drew Cattell and Brian Wallace drove the ZR1X and ZR1 on June 24, 2025. These were not same-day laps by one matched driver.
- Different car specifications: Ford’s Competition account describes a distinct package and targeted output; GM identifies the ZR1 as a 1,064-hp car with a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged flat-plane-crank V8 and the ZR1X as an electrified all-wheel-drive model. The manufacturers’ accounts do not establish a standardized test controlling for conditions, tires, driver or vehicle setup.
Accordingly, the GTD Competition’s 6:40.835 is quicker than the listed ZR1X and ZR1 times, but it does not establish that an original production GTD beat either Corvette in an equivalent contest. The original GTD’s listed production-class time is 6:52.072. The record list identifies the categories; Ford and GM explain their respective vehicle preparations: Nürburgring records, Ford and GM.

How the standard GTD compares on paper
Ford’s current GTD road-car page lists a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, 815 hp at 7,400 rpm, 664 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm and a stated top speed of 202 mph. Those are the original GTD’s published specifications, not GTD Competition figures. Ford Mustang GTD specifications
For context, GM publishes the ZR1’s 1,064-hp rating and describes the ZR1X as an electrified all-wheel-drive model. Those specifications help explain why the Corvette results are significant, but horsepower alone cannot settle a Nordschleife comparison: the posted times belong to separate attempts with distinct cars, drivers and classifications. What the records say about the rivalry
Ford’s 2025 6:52.072 run made the original GTD’s second attempt the point of comparison with the Corvette. The later Competition car moved that benchmark substantially, posting 6:40.835—8.440 seconds quicker than the ZR1X and 9.928 seconds quicker than the ZR1 on the listed official times. Those differences compare recorded results, not controlled performance margins. The cleanest reading is that Ford’s more heavily developed GTD Competition now owns the quicker listed time, while the original GTD and the two Corvettes retain their own distinct record entries.
