Car and Driver’s current summary lists 3.7 seconds for an automatic GT with performance exhaust and 4.2 seconds for a manual. In MotorTrend’s recorded comparisons, the automatic GT beats the Camaro SS and Challenger R/T automatics, while a manual Camaro SS has posted a quicker 4.0-second run. Those are results from different tests, not a universal head-to-head verdict.
How fast is the Mustang GT from 0 to 60 mph?
The best concise answer is to distinguish the transmission and the test. Car and Driver’s current Mustang review reports 3.7 seconds for the GT automatic with performance exhaust and 4.2 seconds for the manual GT. These are publication test-summary figures, not Ford’s official acceleration specifications. Ford’s 2025 GT Fastback specifications list engine output and equipment but do not give a directly comparable instrumented 0–60 time.
| Tested Mustang GT configuration | 0–60 mph | Quarter-mile | Test details |
|---|---|---|---|
| GT automatic | 3.7 seconds | Not stated in Car and Driver’s current summary | With performance exhaust; Car and Driver current review, accessed 2026. Source |
| GT manual | 4.2 seconds | Not stated in Car and Driver’s current summary | Car and Driver current review, accessed 2026. Source |
| 2024 GT Performance Package coupe | 4.3 seconds | 12.5 seconds at 114.7 mph | MotorTrend instrumented test. Source |
| 2024 GT Performance Package convertible | 3.9 seconds | 12.2 seconds at 116.8 mph | MotorTrend instrumented test. The result describes this test car; it does not establish that convertibles are generally quicker. Source |
| 2024 GT manual fastback | 4.8 seconds | 12.7 seconds at 111.6 mph | Edmunds test of a Performance Package car on Pirelli P Zero summer tires; best launch recorded at 2,800 rpm. Source |
| 2024 GT manual | 4.2 seconds | 12.5 seconds at 114 mph | Car and Driver Performance Package test on Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires. Its reported results omit a 0.3-second one-foot rollout. Source |
The numbers should not be collapsed into one definitive time. The tests span different model years, body styles, transmissions, equipment and procedures. For example, Car and Driver explicitly says its manual-test figures omit a one-foot rollout, while Edmunds documents a 2,800-rpm launch. A difference between those reports is not, by itself, evidence that one is wrong.
Can a Mustang GT beat a Camaro SS or Challenger R/T?
It depends on the transmission and which recorded runs are compared. MotorTrend says the Mustang GT automatic beats every Camaro SS and Challenger R/T automatic in its testing records. In manual comparisons, however, MotorTrend records a Camaro SS at 4.0 seconds to 60 mph and 12.4 seconds in the quarter-mile—quicker than the 4.2-second manual GT figure in Car and Driver’s current summary. These are comparisons across publications’ recorded tests, not a controlled test of every model year and trim.

Use the quarter-mile as a second measure rather than treating it as interchangeable with 0–60. The elapsed time and trap speed show performance over a longer run; they do not change the 0–60 result or guarantee the same ordering in a different test.
Why Mustang GT 0–60 times vary
Transmission and launch
The automatic and manual GT figures are not interchangeable. A manual launch depends on how the driver releases the clutch and manages engine speed and wheelspin. Edmunds found the best launch in its 2024 manual GT test at 2,800 rpm with minimal wheelspin. That describes its test car and procedure, not a universal launch recipe for every driver, surface or tire.

Tires, package and body style
The tested Performance Package cars identified by Edmunds and Car and Driver wore Pirelli P Zero summer tires; Car and Driver specifies P Zero PZ4 tires. Tire model and condition can affect traction, but those reports do not establish the fitment for every Mustang GT. Check the exact model year, package, wheel and tire size before buying replacements. MotorTrend’s coupe and convertible results also differ, but one test of each does not show that one body style is inherently faster.
Test procedure
Rollout treatment matters: Car and Driver says its 2024 manual test’s results omit a one-foot rollout of 0.3 seconds. Launch technique and conditions matter too. Treat publication times as measurements under their stated procedures, not as guaranteed times every owner will reproduce.

What the GT’s official specifications do—and do not—tell you
Ford’s official 2025 Mustang GT Fastback specification lists a 5.0-liter V-8 producing 480 hp on 93-octane fuel, or 486 hp with active exhaust, and a six-speed manual; the page also lists the optional Performance Package. Those manufacturer specifications identify the engine and configuration, but they are not a substitute for a third-party instrumented acceleration test. Ford 2025 Mustang GT Fastback specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the Camaro SS and Challenger R/T still new-car alternatives?
Not in the same way as when both were current V-8 rivals. Car and Driver describes the Camaro as out of production and says the Challenger’s successor has inline-six or electric powertrain options. That makes older V-8 Camaro and Challenger versions useful performance benchmarks, but a buyer comparing used examples should match the specific year, trim and transmission rather than rely on a broad model-name comparison. Production and availability can vary by market and change over time. Car and Driver’s Mustang review and rival context.

How to use the numbers when deciding
- For a quick current-summary comparison, start with the same transmission: Car and Driver lists the GT automatic at 3.7 seconds and the manual at 4.2 seconds.
- For a used Camaro SS or Challenger R/T, compare the particular car’s model year, trim, transmission, tires and test source; do not assume every rival shares the result of one recorded run.
- Read the test notes for rollout, launch and tires before treating small time differences as meaningful.
- If you are comparing Mustang variants, MotorTrend lists the 2024 Dark Horse at 3.7 seconds (automatic) and 4.1 seconds (manual), with quarter-mile times of 12.0 and 12.6 seconds respectively. The Dark Horse is a higher-performance Mustang variant, not a GT rival. MotorTrend 2024 Dark Horse test
