The likely car behind this headline is a one-off Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano transformed into a modern homage to the 1972 Ferrari Daytona Shooting Brake. Its defining feature is a stretched roof and rear body with butterfly rear windows that open into the luggage compartment. It is not the original Ferrari Breadvan, nor the separate 550 Maranello-based Breadvan Hommage. The identification is an inference: the exact headline was not located, and the latest account is Carscoops’ report of July 8, 2026.
What is the new Ferrari shooting brake?
Carscoops reported on July 8, 2026 that Niels van Roij Design was associated with a one-off Daytona Shooting Brake Homage based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. The conversion gives the donor a longer roofline and rear body, with custom body panels. According to the report, every exterior panel except the doors is unique, and the body is hand-formed from aluminum.
Rather than a conventional tailgate, butterfly rear windows open directly into the luggage compartment. That unusual arrangement makes the extended rear body’s cargo space part of the design rather than simply adding a hatch to the 599’s existing shape.
Carscoops says the project took more than 15,000 hours. That figure applies to this reported one-off, not to coachbuilt cars generally. Price, sale or ownership status, and a complete official specification were not established in the report.

How the three Ferraris are related—and different
The name can cause confusion because “Breadvan” and “shooting brake” refer to several distinct cars. The likely new car looks back to the 1972 Daytona Shooting Brake; that earlier car was itself inspired by the original 250 GT SWB Breadvan.
| Car | Donor and era | Connection and body | Mechanical information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan | Ferrari 250 GT SWB, 1962 | Commissioned by Count Giovanni Volpi after he could not buy a 250 GTO, according to Top Gear’s account of the car’s Le Mans story. Its modified body inspired the later Daytona Shooting Brake. | No comparable specification is established by the cited accounts. |
| Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Shooting Brake | Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, 1972 | Commissioned by Luigi Chinetti Jr. and built by Panther Westwinds; Carscoops describes it as inspired by the 250 GT SWB Breadvan. | No comparable specification is established by the cited report. |
| Ferrari Daytona Shooting Brake Homage | Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, reported in 2026 | A one-off modern reimagining of the 1972 car, with an extended rear, bespoke panels and opening butterfly rear windows. | Mechanical changes were not confirmed by Carscoops. The stock donor’s figures are not confirmed figures for the conversion. |
| Ferrari 550 Maranello Breadvan Hommage | Ferrari 550 Maranello; commissioned in 2018 | A separate one-off commissioned by a German client and coachbuilt with hand-formed aluminum, as described by Classic Driver. It pays tribute to the 1960s Breadvan, not the 1972 Daytona Shooting Brake. | No comparable specification is established by the cited feature. |
Top Gear recounts that the original Breadvan retired from its 1962 Le Mans entry after a driveshaft failure. That is the publication’s account of the episode, not an official Ferrari history.

What does “shooting brake” mean here?
There is no uncontested modern definition in the available interview with designer Niels van Roij. He recounts a client’s view that a shooting brake is a coachbuilt conversion and that the number of doors is not decisive; the interview also acknowledges that the term is debated. For this Ferrari, the useful description is concrete: a bespoke, elongated rear body and roof that create a cargo area behind a sports-car cabin.
What is known about its performance?
Carscoops gives the standard Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano’s 6.0-liter V12 output as 611 hp (620 PS) and its 0–62 mph time as 3.7 seconds. Those are stock-donor figures, not tested or confirmed performance figures for the Shooting Brake Homage. The coachbuilder had not confirmed mechanical changes when the report was published, so there is no supported basis for assigning the conversion those specifications or comparing its performance with the historic cars.

Why the earlier 550 Breadvan Hommage matters
The 599-based Daytona homage is not Niels van Roij Design’s first Ferrari estate-style reinterpretation. The firm’s separate 550 Maranello-based Breadvan Hommage was commissioned by a German client in 2018 and used hand-formed aluminum bodywork, according to Classic Driver. In a March 2026 interview with Car Design News, van Roij called that earlier project a hand-coachbuilt 550-based one-off and said he personally likes shooting brakes. Those remarks concern the 550 homage, not the newer 599 conversion.
