The announcement, published in October 2025, recognizes the refreshed 2025 models; 2026 is the award edition, not the Golf model year covered in the story.
Which car won MotorTrend’s 2026 Car of the Year?
The Volkswagen Golf GTI / R won. MotorTrend describes the recipients as the performance-oriented GTI and R versions of the refreshed eighth-generation Golf. It counts this as the Golf’s third Car of the Year award, after wins in 1985 and 2015. MotorTrend’s winner announcement was published October 15, 2025.
What does MotorTrend’s award evaluate?
MotorTrend says its 2026 competition included 14 model lines and 20 cars. Eligible vehicles needed a new powertrain, a total redesign, or another substantive change, subject to availability and manufacturer participation. This is not simply a ranking from a direct head-to-head test: entrants are assessed against a shared set of criteria. MotorTrend’s account of the contenders and process explains the approach.
- Advancement in design
- Efficiency
- Engineering excellence
- Performance of intended function
- Safety
- Value
MotorTrend’s editors judged the Golf to stand out across all six. That is the publication’s award assessment, not an independent third-party rating.

Why did the Golf GTI and R win?
MotorTrend’s explanation emphasizes a combination of design continuity, updates to the cabin technology, and the cars’ established driving character rather than a single performance number. The winner article points to restrained evolution of the familiar Golf shape and updated exterior details. Guest judge Johan de Nysschen described the result as an updated design that remains recognizable across generations.
For the 2025 Golf models, MotorTrend notes a standard 12.9-inch infotainment screen with quicker software and improved voice commands. It also cites equipment available on the Golf R through its Euro Style package: lighter sport seats, deletion of the sunroof, and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust. That package detail applies to the Golf R, not the GTI, and it is not standard equipment.

How were the contenders tested?
MotorTrend’s testing took place at the Honda Proving Center in Cantil, California. Its test department recorded weight, acceleration, braking, lateral acceleration, quarter-mile times, and figure-eight lap times. Seven judges—six MotorTrend editors and guest juror Johan de Nysschen—evaluated the entrants.
After proving-ground evaluations and finalist selection, judges drove finalists on public roads near Tehachapi. The road portion let them assess active safety in traffic, handling on a curvy road, and refinement over rough surfaces before final deliberations. This combination of measurements and road evaluation reflects the award’s broader criteria; the result is not just a contest to find the quickest car.
