Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. That result reflects owners’ experience with 2022 vehicles after three years—not a guarantee for every CX-5, or proof that a redesigned or newer Mazda will perform the same.
Which Mazda has the strongest reliability evidence?
The 2022 CX-5 is the clearest answer when the question is which Mazda has a directly reported, model-specific dependability result. Mazda’s February 2025 announcement says it earned a top-three position in the Compact SUV category of J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS. The recognition concerns the 2022 model-year vehicle cohort, not all CX-5s or all Mazda SUVs. Mazda’s announcement provides the model-specific award detail.
J.D. Power’s study measured problems reported by original owners after three years of ownership. It evaluates 184 potential problem areas across nine categories, so it is an observed dependability measure for that cohort—not a precise forecast of how a different model year will fare. J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS release explains the study and its scope.
What Mazda’s brand score does—and does not—tell you
Mazda ranked second among mass-market brands in the 2025 VDS, with 161 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), according to J.D. Power’s results as reported by Mazda. Mazda said its result improved by 24 PP100 from the previous year. PP100 is a study measure of reported problems; lower is better. A brand average can provide context, but it cannot identify which Mazda model or year is the best choice for an individual buyer.

The study drew responses from 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles, with fieldwork conducted from August through November 2024. Those details help explain why the result is useful for judging vehicles after ownership, but less conclusive for a new model year or a vehicle with substantially changed hardware.
Why a newer or redesigned Mazda needs separate evidence
J.D. Power found that 2022 launches averaged 241 PP100, compared with 196 PP100 for carryover models. Those are cross-industry averages, not Mazda-specific scores. They support caution when evaluating a fresh redesign, but do not prove that any particular new Mazda is less reliable.

Powertrain also matters. Across the study, plug-in hybrids averaged 242 PP100 and gas vehicles averaged 200 PP100. These fleet-wide figures do not establish a Mazda-specific disadvantage for any hybrid; they are a reason to seek evidence for the exact model, year, and powertrain rather than assuming different versions have the same record.
Other Mazda models: what the available evidence supports
2022 Mazda CX-9
Mazda also reports a top-three Upper Midsize SUV recognition for the 2022 CX-9 in the 2025 VDS. The CX-9 is a discontinued prior model, so this may matter to shoppers considering a used example, rather than buyers seeking a new Mazda SUV.

Mazda3, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90
The available evidence does not provide comparable, model-year-specific dependability scores for these vehicles or their powertrains. It would be misleading to rank them against the CX-5 on the basis of Mazda’s brand result alone.
One tempting data point needs particular care: J.D. Power’s 2025 CX-30 page lists an 80/100 Quality & Reliability rating, but says it used previous-year review data and cautions that the redesigned vehicle is unproven. How to choose a Mazda for reliability
- Pin down the exact vehicle. Compare model year, generation, and powertrain. A result for a 2022 gas CX-5 does not automatically apply to a newer generation or another powertrain.
- Separate observed history from prediction. A dependability study based on owners’ experience answers a different question from a rating that predicts reliability for a new or redesigned vehicle.
- For a used Mazda, verify the individual car. Review maintenance records and arrange a pre-purchase inspection; a model-level award cannot reveal how a particular vehicle was maintained or damaged.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the official recall lookup for the specific vehicle, because current open-recall status depends on its VIN.
Can a Mazda be expected to last a decade or match Toyota or Honda?
The available study does not establish that any Mazda model will last at least ten years, nor does it prove equivalence with Toyota or Honda. Its strongest specific result is the 2022 CX-5’s placement in the 2025 three-year dependability study. Consumer Reports’ current reliability guide says Lexus, Subaru, and Toyota lead its car-brand reliability ratings and that Mazda fell significantly, but the cited guide does not provide the model-by-model Mazda results needed to identify a best Mazda from those ratings. Consumer Reports’ reliability guide is brand-level context, not a Mazda model ranking.
