The Toyota Corolla has the clearest recent dependability distinction among the mainstream compact cars in the available evidence: J.D. Power ranked it first in the compact-car segment in its 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study, ahead of the Kia Forte and Subaru Impreza. That is not a promise about every new car, and the evidence does not support a verified ranking of ten current entry-level sedans. Here is what can be compared responsibly—and where the evidence stops.
What “reliable” means in these rankings
Reliability scores are meaningful only when the measure is clear. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) counts problems owners report in three-year-old vehicles during the preceding 12 months; it therefore describes a particular group of older vehicles, not the expected reliability of every new model year. See J.D. Power’s explanation of the VDS method.
Consumer Reports uses a broader Overall Score that includes reliability alongside track testing, owner satisfaction, safety features, and crash-test data. Its Overall Score is not a reliability-only ranking, so it should not be compared directly with J.D. Power’s dependability results. See Consumer Reports’ explanation of its Overall Score.
For a fair comparison, the model year, body style, powertrain, study year, and scoring method all need to match. A predicted reliability estimate for a new vehicle and a count of problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles answer different questions.

The strongest direct dependability result: Toyota Corolla
J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS named the Toyota Corolla the highest-ranked compact car, followed by the Kia Forte and Subaru Impreza in the segment listing. This is the clearest recent model-level dependability distinction in the evidence available here. It is a segment result from that study, not a definitive ranking of all current sedans. See J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS results.
The 2026 VDS also named the Corolla among its model-level award recipients. J.D. Power reported 198 problems per 100 vehicles for gas-powered vehicles overall in that study; that figure is not a Corolla-specific score. See J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS announcement.

How the other compact-car candidates compare
The evidence identifies a field of mainstream compact-car candidates, but it does not supply comparable reliability values for ten current sedans. These are the results and limits that can be stated:
| Model | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla | J.D. Power ranked it first in the compact-car segment in the 2025 VDS and named it among the 2026 VDS model-level award recipients. 2025 results; 2026 results | A guarantee for a specific new model year or a comparable score against every current sedan. |
| Kia Forte | Second in J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS compact-car segment listing. 2025 results | A current-model-year ranking or a comparable current sedan score. |
| Subaru Impreza | Third in that 2025 segment listing; Consumer Reports describes it as Subaru’s most reliable model. J.D. Power; Consumer Reports | A sedan-only comparison: the Impreza’s body-style fit must be checked for a sedan-only list. |
| Mazda3 | Consumer Reports says the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback are above average for reliability. Consumer Reports summary | A directly comparable score against the VDS results or a precise position in a ten-car ranking. |
| Honda Civic | Included among small-car listings in Consumer Reports’ sedan ratings index and among the compact-car profiles covered by J.D. Power’s 2026 study. Consumer Reports index; J.D. Power coverage | A comparable reliability result in the cited material. |
| Hyundai Elantra | Included in Consumer Reports’ small-car listings and J.D. Power’s 2026 compact-car profiles. Hyundai identifies the Civic, Corolla, 2025 Sentra, and 2025 Kia K4 as competitors. Consumer Reports; J.D. Power; Hyundai | An independent ranking relative to those competitors. |
| Nissan Sentra | Included in Consumer Reports’ small-car listings and J.D. Power’s 2026 compact-car profiles. Consumer Reports; J.D. Power | A comparable model-level reliability score. |
| Kia K4 | Included in J.D. Power’s 2026 compact-car profiles; Hyundai also names the 2025 K4 as a competitor to the Elantra. J.D. Power; Hyundai | A high reliability score or a directly comparable rank. |
J.D. Power’s study coverage list includes a model for consideration; coverage alone does not show that it scored well. Likewise, a manufacturer’s competitor list describes the market positioning it sees, not independent reliability evidence.

- Advantage: The asymmetrical tread pattern design greatly enhances the tire's grip and drainage effect, allowing the tire to offer better handling performance in different road conditions.
- Eligible for Road Hazard Claims: We provide a 3-Year Road Hazard Warranty . Coverage applies to specific failures such as bulges, air leaks, or blowouts occurring within 3 years of purchase and and within the first 4/32nds of an inch of tread wear (Since October 1, 2025).
Why this is not a top-ten ranking
A top-ten list implies ten eligible sedans assessed on a shared basis. The current evidence does not establish that. Some sources group sedans and hatchbacks as compact cars, some provide a broad overall score rather than a reliability-only measure, and some candidate listings do not show comparable reliability values. Adding models to reach ten would make the ranking look more certain than the evidence allows.
There is also a model-year caveat when reading online score pages. J.D. Power says a current-year model page can carry over prior-year data while new survey results are pending. Check the underlying study year before describing a displayed number as a current-model-year reliability result. See J.D. Power’s Elantra page note.

How to use these findings when choosing a sedan
- Start with the Corolla if dependability evidence is your main filter. It has the strongest direct recent segment result in the cited J.D. Power studies, but that evidence describes study results, not a guarantee for an individual car.
- Compare like with like. Confirm whether a result applies to a sedan or hatchback, the model year and powertrain, and whether it measures owner-reported problems, predicted reliability, or a broader vehicle score.
- Treat the Forte and Impreza result as study-specific. Their positions in the 2025 VDS segment listing are useful signals, not a complete ranking of today’s sedan choices.
- Keep the remaining candidates in consideration without inventing an order. Civic, Elantra, Sentra, K4, and Mazda3 appear in the cited coverage or reliability summaries, but the evidence here does not rank them against one another on a common reliability measure.
