More Tesla Employees Were Laid Off as the 2024 “Bloodbath” Entered Its Fourth Week

Tesla’s reported layoffs entered a fourth week in May 2024, affecting software, services, engineering, recruiting, and other roles. Here is what the company officially disclosed—and what the public record still cannot confirm.

The report that Tesla’s layoffs had entered a fourth week dates to May 6, 2024—not to a current 2026 event. At the time, employees and media reports described another wave of employment-status notices affecting software, services, engineering, recruiting, and other functions. Tesla had already announced a company-wide restructuring targeting more than 10% of its global workforce, but it did not publicly disclose a complete department-by-department or week-by-week tally.

What happened in the fourth week?

Reports published on May 6 and 7, 2024 said Tesla employees were receiving another round of layoff or employment-status notices. The reports described the cuts as the fourth consecutive week in which workers had been informed that their jobs were ending or changing.

The affected areas reportedly included:

  • Software
  • Service and services operations
  • Engineering
  • Recruiting
  • Other corporate and operational roles

The reporting was based largely on employee posts, people familiar with the cuts, and coverage from outlets including Electrek, Business Insider, and Bloomberg. Tesla did not publish a detailed breakdown showing exactly how many employees were affected in that particular week or confirming every department mentioned in those reports.

The word “bloodbath” came from the contemporary headline and should not be treated as a Tesla description or a measured finding. A more precise description is that Tesla was carrying out successive waves of layoffs and sending notices over several weeks.

Tesla had already announced a global workforce reduction

The fourth-week notices were part of a broader restructuring Tesla announced on April 15, 2024. In an April 16 Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla said it intended to reduce its global headcount by more than 10%.

Tesla said the restructuring was intended to address several issues:

  • Rapid growth across multiple factories and locations
  • Duplication of roles and job functions
  • Lower operating costs
  • Improved productivity

The filing described the move as part of preparing Tesla for its next phase of growth, including its automotive, energy, artificial-intelligence, and software businesses. That was management’s stated rationale; it does not establish that every individual layoff was caused by a specific financial result or that every affected department was redundant.

Tesla reported approximately 140,473 employees worldwide at the end of 2023 in its annual Form 10-K. Ten percent of that figure is about 14,000 positions, which gives a sense of the potential scale. It is only an arithmetic comparison, however. Tesla’s official language was “more than 10% globally,” not a final confirmed total of approximately 14,000 layoffs.

Why was Tesla cutting jobs?

Tesla’s restructuring came as the company faced weaker financial results and a changing electric-vehicle market. In its first-quarter 2024 results, Tesla reported:

Measure Reported result Context
Net income attributable to common stockholders $1.13 billion Down $1.38 billion year over year
Free cash flow Negative $2.5 billion Cash generation was under pressure during the quarter

Those figures supplied an important backdrop for cost-cutting, but they do not prove that a particular employee or team was eliminated because of a particular financial metric. Tesla presented the layoffs as both a response to duplication and inefficiency and a reorganization intended to support future growth.

The timing also followed other significant changes. Senior Vice President Andrew Baglino resigned effective April 14, shortly before Tesla announced the workforce reduction. Leadership departures, cost pressure, slowing growth in some vehicle markets, and the company’s efforts to redirect resources all formed part of the broader 2024 restructuring story.

The Supercharger team became the most consequential example

One of the most closely watched cuts involved Tesla’s Supercharger organization. In late April 2024, Tesla dismissed charging executive Rebecca Tinucci and eliminated most of the approximately 500-person Supercharger team, according to reporting by the Associated Press and Reuters.

The cuts attracted unusual attention because the Supercharger network was strategically important not only to Tesla owners but also to other automakers. Several manufacturers had announced plans to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard connector, making access to the company’s charging network a potentially important business opportunity.

Reuters reported, citing former employees, that the layoffs followed a disagreement over further reductions. That account should be understood as reported testimony from former employees, not as an independently verified public account of every internal management decision.

The apparent contradiction became sharper when Tesla said it planned to spend more than $500 million expanding the Supercharger network. Tesla also said the network would continue to expand at a slower pace. Reuters reported that some former Supercharger employees were later rehired.

Those developments do not show that the entire team was restored or that the layoffs had no operational consequences. They do show why the cuts raised questions about how Tesla intended to maintain and expand a strategically important network with a substantially smaller organization.

The layoffs continued after the fourth-week report

The May 6 report was not the end of the 2024 restructuring. California WARN-related reporting in mid-May identified another 601 planned Tesla job cuts:

Location Planned cuts
Fremont facilities 378
Palo Alto offices 223
Total 601

The notices said those layoffs were scheduled to occur over a 14-day period beginning June 20, 2024. The later date reflects the advance-notice system rather than a claim that all 601 employees were dismissed on May 13 or May 15.

Separate reporting also referred to notices covering thousands of additional Tesla positions in Texas, California, Nevada, and New York. Those figures should not be combined casually with the 601 California positions or with the unitemized employee-notice wave reported on May 6.

What California WARN notices do—and do not—show

California’s Employment Development Department explains that qualifying mass layoffs generally require WARN notices, commonly with at least 60 days of advance notice, although statutory exceptions can apply. This helps explain why public notices could list a future effective date after employees had already learned that their jobs were being eliminated.

A WARN notice is also not the same thing as a complete final companywide layoff count. It is a legal notice for qualifying events at covered locations. Some layoffs may fall outside the same requirements, and the total can change if employees are reassigned, resign, are rehired, or are counted differently across reporting periods.

How many Tesla employees were actually laid off?

There is no reliable public figure in the available evidence for the number of people laid off during the specific fourth week reported on May 6, 2024. Tesla’s SEC filing established the overall target of more than 10% globally, but it did not provide a detailed tally for that week.

The final cumulative number of Tesla workers affected in 2024 is also difficult to state without defining what is being counted. Estimates may differ depending on whether they include:

  • Employees who received formal termination notices
  • Contractors and temporary workers
  • People named in later WARN notices
  • Voluntary departures during the restructuring
  • Workers who were subsequently rehired
  • Positions eliminated without a publicly announced individual termination

For that reason, the most defensible statements are that Tesla announced a reduction of more than 10% of its global headcount, that another reported wave affected several functions during the week of May 6, and that additional location-specific cuts were documented afterward.

A concise timeline of Tesla’s 2024 restructuring

  1. April 14: Senior Vice President Andrew Baglino’s resignation became effective.
  2. April 15–16: Tesla announced and filed details of a global restructuring targeting more than 10% of its workforce.
  3. April 23: Tesla reported first-quarter results showing lower net income and negative free cash flow.
  4. Late April: Tesla dismissed charging executive Rebecca Tinucci and cut most of the roughly 500-person Supercharger team, according to AP and Reuters reporting.
  5. May 6–7: Reports described another wave of notices affecting software, services, engineering, recruiting, and other functions—the fourth reported week of notices.
  6. May 13–15: California WARN reporting identified 601 additional planned cuts in Fremont and Palo Alto, scheduled over a period beginning June 20.

What the fourth-week report means in context

The significance of the May 6 report was less that it established a precise new number than that it showed the restructuring unfolding in repeated waves. Employees were not necessarily receiving one companywide announcement on one day. Instead, notices appeared to be moving through different teams, locations, and employment processes over time.

That pattern made the workforce reduction appear broader and more uncertain than a single announced facility closure. It also made the total harder to audit from public information. Employee reports could reveal which functions were being affected, while SEC filings and WARN notices supplied formal information about the overall restructuring and selected locations. Neither source alone provided a complete global count.

For Tesla, the cuts represented a trade-off: reducing duplicated work and near-term costs while continuing to invest in vehicles, energy storage, artificial intelligence, software, and charging infrastructure. The Supercharger layoffs illustrated the tension particularly clearly. A business unit could be strategically important while still being reorganized, reduced, or operated on a slower expansion plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Tesla’s fourth-week layoff report published in 2024 or 2026?

It was published on May 6–7, 2024. It should be treated as a historical report about Tesla’s 2024 restructuring, not as a current 2026 layoff update.

How many employees did Tesla say it would lay off?

Tesla said in an April 2024 SEC filing that it would reduce global headcount by more than 10%. Because Tesla had approximately 140,473 employees at the end of 2023, 10% would be roughly 14,000 positions, but that calculation is not a precise final layoff count.

Which Tesla departments were reportedly affected in the fourth week?

Reports identified software, service or services, engineering, recruiting, and other roles. Tesla did not publicly provide a complete department-by-department breakdown for that specific week.

Were the Tesla Supercharger layoffs reversed?

Not completely, based on the available reporting. Reuters reported that some former Supercharger employees were later rehired, while Tesla said the network would continue expanding at a slower pace. That does not establish that the approximately 500-person team was fully restored.

What were the 601 California Tesla cuts?

California WARN-related reporting identified 378 planned cuts at Fremont facilities and 223 at Palo Alto offices, for 601 total. The notices scheduled the layoffs over a 14-day period beginning June 20, 2024.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tesla’s “fourth-week” layoff story was a May 2024 development within a broader global restructuring. Tesla officially announced a headcount reduction of more than 10%, while employee reports and media coverage described continuing notices across software, services, engineering, recruiting, and other functions. The exact number affected in that fourth week—and a definitive final global total—was not publicly established by the available filings.
