The biggest used-market milestones are 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2022—but most changes from 2017 through 2025 are refinements within one generation, not new generations.
Short answer: The Mazda CX-5 has three generations in the U.S.: the first generation covers 2012–2016, the second covers 2017–2025, and the third begins with the redesigned 2026 model. The most important used-market breakpoints are 2017 for the second-generation redesign, 2018 for cylinder deactivation and added equipment, 2019 for turbocharged higher trims, 2021 for the larger infotainment display, and 2022 for the major refresh and standard all-wheel drive across the U.S. lineup.
Although Mazda changed engines, trims, technology, styling, and chassis tuning several times between 2017 and 2025, those vehicles remain second-generation CX-5s. The 2026 model is the first true generational change since 2017.
Scope: This guide uses U.S. model years for trim, equipment, drivetrain, and pricing references. Mazda markets and model-year availability can differ in Canada, Europe, Australia, and other regions.

Mazda CX-5 generations at a glance
| Generation | U.S. model years | What defines it | Best shorthand |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2012–2016 | The original CX-5, built around Mazda Skyactiv technology and Kodo design. | The foundational, relatively simple CX-5 formula. |
| Second generation | 2017–2025 | An all-new body and cabin, followed by substantial annual refinements. | The longest-running generation; 2019 and 2022 are especially important years. |
| Third generation | 2026–present at the research date | A new body and cabin architecture, larger displays, revised safety technology, and standard U.S. AWD. | A genuine redesign, even though the launch engine retains familiar specifications. |
How Mazda CX-5 model years and generations differ
A model year is an annual version of the vehicle. A generation is a broader redesign cycle. Mazda can change a trim, add a feature, revise suspension tuning, or introduce a new engine without creating a new generation.
That distinction matters when shopping for a used CX-5 or ordering parts. A 2022 CX-5 is considerably different from a 2017 in comfort, equipment, and drivetrain availability, but both use the second-generation body architecture. A 2026 CX-5, by contrast, is a third-generation vehicle with a new body, cabin, electrical and infotainment architecture, and updated chassis and traction-management systems.
First generation: 2012–2016
What changed for the original CX-5
The first-generation CX-5 introduced Mazda’s compact crossover to the market. Production began in November 2011, the first CX-5 launched as a 2012 model, and Mazda used the vehicle to introduce its newer product strategy built around the Skyactiv family of technologies and the Kodo, or Soul of Motion, design language.
The key story of 2012–2016 is not a series of radically different vehicles. It is the establishment and gradual refinement of the original CX-5 formula: a compact crossover emphasizing efficient engineering, relatively light construction, responsive driving characteristics, and Mazda’s distinctive exterior design. Equipment, powertrain details, and safety features changed during the run, but the basic body and cabin belong to one generation.
What to know when buying a 2012–2016 CX-5
- For body, cabin, and many replacement-part discussions, treat 2012–2016 as one generation.
- Do not assume every component fits every first-generation vehicle. Engine, trim, drivetrain, market, and production-date differences can affect compatibility.
- Early model years may have a different equipment mix from later examples, so check the vehicle’s original window sticker, build information, or VIN-specific parts listing rather than relying only on the CX-5 name.
- When comparing one with a 2017 or newer vehicle, remember that the 2017 model is not a facelift of the first generation; it is the first year of a completely new generation.
Second generation: 2017–2025
The second generation is the longest-running CX-5 generation. It began with an all-new 2017 model and continued through 2025, receiving repeated updates instead of a replacement body each year. Mazda’s second-generation CX-5 world premiere took place in November 2016, and the U.S. model arrived in late March 2017.
2017: all-new second-generation redesign
The 2017 CX-5 established the basic design and engineering foundation used through 2025. Mazda described the redesign as an improvement in refinement, craftsmanship, safety, efficiency, and driving dynamics. Compared with the original vehicle, the second-generation model brought a new body and cabin presentation and a more mature approach to noise control, materials, and technology.
For used shoppers, 2017 is the most important dividing line in the entire CX-5 history. It is the first year of the second-generation body, not merely an equipment update to the 2016 model. However, it is also the first year of that design, so its standard equipment and available features should be compared carefully with later second-generation years.
2018: cylinder deactivation and broader equipment
Mazda made meaningful changes only about nine months after the second generation went on sale. The 2018 CX-5 added cylinder-deactivation technology, expanded safety and convenience equipment, and broadened trim-level content. Mazda also highlighted standard LED headlights and taillights and premium options such as an available head-up display.

It is not a new generation, but it can offer efficiency and equipment advantages over comparable 2017 examples. Buyers should still verify the exact engine and trim because equipment was not identical across the lineup.
2019: turbocharged power and upscale trims
The 2019 model year expanded the CX-5’s premium and performance range. Mazda introduced the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims, paired those higher trims with the Skyactiv-G 2.5T turbocharged engine and standard i-Activ AWD, and added G-Vectoring Control Plus chassis technology.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also became available on more trims. Selected versions received 19-inch wheel changes, while the Signature model added its own badging and more upscale equipment. Connected-media features and other trim-specific details also changed.
In practical terms, 2019 is the year the CX-5 became easier to find as a more overtly premium compact SUV with stronger turbocharged performance. Naturally aspirated four-cylinder models continued elsewhere in the lineup, so not every 2019 CX-5 has the turbo engine.
2020: refinement and improved turbo drivability
The 2020 CX-5 retained the second-generation body but received refinement-focused changes. Mazda added an Engine Harmonics Enhancer, increased maximum torque, and introduced Off-road Traction Assist on turbocharged CX-5 models equipped with i-Activ AWD.
Mazda also emphasized improvements in noise, vibration, and harshness and standard i-Activsense safety equipment. The result is best understood as a drivability and refinement update rather than a redesign. A 2020 model may be attractive to buyers who want the turbo powertrain with the later tuning and safety content, but the exact feature set remains trim-dependent.
2021: 10.25-inch infotainment display and Carbon Edition
The 2021 CX-5 received Mazda’s 10.25-inch center display and the latest-generation Mazda Connect infotainment system. Mazda also made additional i-Activsense updates and introduced a new Carbon Edition with distinctive styling.
This year is a clear technology breakpoint within the second generation. The larger display and Carbon Edition give 2021 a more recognizable identity than a routine package reshuffle, while the underlying second-generation body and available turbo powertrain continued.

2022: major refresh, Mi-Drive, and standard U.S. AWD
The 2022 CX-5 received the most substantial second-generation refresh. Mazda revised the exterior design and made changes to the seats, body, and suspension. The company also introduced Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, known as Mi-Drive, with Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes.
For the U.S. market, i-Activ AWD became standard on every CX-5 beginning with the 2022 model year. That makes 2022 a major drivetrain-equipment breakpoint: unlike earlier U.S. years, shoppers generally do not need to search the trim sheet for an AWD option within the lineup.
Mazda also targeted ride comfort and refinement. The update included increased body rigidity, revised damping control, reduced vibration, and lower road noise. The 2022 CX-5 is therefore more than a cosmetic refresh, but it remains a second-generation vehicle rather than a third generation.
2023: continuity, new color, and carried-over safety technology
The 2023 CX-5 was primarily a continuity and packaging update. Mazda introduced Rhodium White as a new premium exterior color in North America and retained standard i-Activ AWD throughout the U.S. lineup.

- 【Material】: This car seat cushion is made of polyester fabric filled with sponge. The fabric is soft, wear-resistant, and not prone to pilling. Its unique 3D breathable mesh structure can accelerate air circulation, so it won't feel stuffy even after long-term sitting, effectively reducing sweating and keeping you dry and comfortable, which meets the needs of use in all seasons.
- 【Comfortable Car Seat Cushion】: This car seat bottom cover has excellent sponge resilience, which can buffer the vibration caused by driving bumps. The cushion fits the buttocks, provides comfortable support, can effectively distribute pressure, relieve fatigue, and enhance the driving and riding experience.
- 【Protect Car Seat】: This car seat cushion can effectively block dust and liquids, prevent the original car seats from being worn, maintain the neat appearance of the seats, and extend the service life of the original car seats, being both beautiful and practical.
- 【Easy to Install】: The installation operation is simple. Pass the chuck through the gap between the seat and the backrest, then flip and clamp it to complete the fixation. The bottom of the cushion is evenly distributed with non-slip particles, so it will not shift easily when the road is bumpy or when adjusting the sitting posture daily.
- 【Package & Size】: The package contains 1 car seat cover with a size of approximately 19.68×18.89 inches. It is compatible with the seats of various vehicles such as trucks, SUVs, and sedans, and can also be used for restaurant dining chairs and office seats.
The model carried forward a broad set of standard driver-assistance features, including radar cruise control with Stop and Go, Smart Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping functions. Buyers comparing 2023 with 2022 should focus on pricing, mileage, condition, and trim equipment rather than expecting another mechanical redesign.
2024: Carbon Turbo and wireless connectivity
The 2024 CX-5 added the Carbon Turbo package, combining distinctive styling with the turbocharged engine. This gave buyers a more visually differentiated turbo model without changing the underlying second-generation architecture.
Mazda also highlighted improved EPA-estimated combined fuel economy for 2.5 S models, new color availability, and expanded wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and wireless phone charging on selected trims. Because these features varied by configuration, the specific vehicle’s trim and build sheet matter more than the year alone.
2025: final second-generation packaging before the redesign
The 2025 CX-5 retained the second-generation platform and standard U.S. AWD while Mazda adjusted the lineup and added convenience features. The entry-level 2.5 S returned, and dual front USB-C ports became standard. Other connectivity and convenience changes varied across trims.
The U.S. lineup included naturally aspirated 2.5 S models, Carbon Edition and Premium configurations, and turbocharged Carbon Turbo, Turbo Premium, and Turbo Signature variants. Mazda’s listed starting MSRPs were $29,050 for the 2.5 S and $41,080 for the Turbo Signature, before destination and other charges. Dealer pricing, inventory, taxes, title, registration, and fees can change the actual transaction price.
For maintenance planning, Mazda’s 2025 owner manual specifies cabin-air-filter replacement every 30,000 miles or two years. The manual also gives different spark-plug intervals for naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines and separates normal-use from severe-use schedules. Use the maintenance schedule for the exact engine and driving conditions rather than applying one interval to every CX-5.
Third generation: 2026
A genuine redesign after nine years
The 2026 CX-5 is the third generation and the first full redesign since 2017. Mazda unveiled it in July 2025 for the 2026 model year. It retains recognizable CX-5 proportions but moves visually closer to the design language used by the CX-70 and CX-90.
The generational change is concentrated in the body and cabin architecture, interior space and utility, infotainment and electrical systems, driver-assistance technology, and chassis and traction-management tuning. The familiar 2.5-liter displacement at launch should not obscure the fact that this is a new vehicle generation.

2026 powertrain and chassis
At U.S. launch, the 2026 CX-5 uses a naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ AWD.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe updated Mi-Drive system provides Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes. The latest version of G-Vectoring Control Plus incorporates an electronic brake limited-slip differential. These changes are part of the new generation’s traction and chassis-management package, even though the launch engine retains familiar output figures.
Do not assume that the turbocharged engine available in several second-generation years carries into the 2026 launch lineup. The supplied U.S. launch information identifies the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter as the launch powertrain.
2026 cabin, displays, and technology
The redesigned CX-5 provides a more spacious cabin and greater utility. Most trims receive a 12.9-inch center display, while the Premium Plus receives a 15.6-inch display.
The 2026 model adds Google built-in technology, including navigation and voice-assistant functionality, with Gemini AI assistant functionality available as specified by Mazda. Depending on trim, equipment can include a larger driver display, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, rear USB-C ports, Bose audio, a 360-degree-view monitor, hands-free liftgate operation, and driver-personalization functions.
Because the 2026 model changes the infotainment and electrical architecture, do not treat its screen, charging hardware, trim electronics, or interior components as interchangeable with second-generation CX-5 parts.
2026 U.S. trims and pricing
Mazda’s January 2026 U.S. pricing release listed five packages:
| 2026 trim | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| CX-5 2.5 S | $29,990 |
| CX-5 2.5 S Select | $31,990 |
| CX-5 2.5 S Preferred | $34,250 |
| CX-5 2.5 S Premium | $36,900 |
| CX-5 2.5 S Premium Plus | $38,990 |
These prices exclude the $1,495 destination and handling charge, or $1,540 in Alaska, along with taxes, title, license, and other fees. Dealer prices and inventory can differ. As a newly redesigned model, the 2026 CX-5 should also be evaluated separately from used second-generation pricing.

Which CX-5 model year makes sense for you?
| Your priority | Years to investigate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest purchase price within the original design | 2012–2016 | First-generation vehicles can offer the original CX-5 formula, but equipment and parts compatibility require careful year-specific checking. |
| The redesigned body at the earliest point | 2017 | It is the first second-generation model, although later years add meaningful equipment. |
| More equipment than many 2017 examples | 2018 | Cylinder deactivation, broader safety and convenience content, and added lighting equipment mark a useful upgrade. |
| Turbocharged performance and upscale trim choices | 2019–2025 | Turbo availability begins with higher trims in 2019 and continues in selected later configurations. |
| Modernized infotainment within the second generation | 2021–2025 | The 10.25-inch display arrives in 2021, with later years adding connectivity and packaging changes. |
| Standard AWD in the U.S. and the major second-generation refresh | 2022–2025 | These years combine the refreshed body and chassis changes with standard i-Activ AWD across the U.S. CX-5 lineup. |
| A completely new cabin and vehicle architecture | 2026 | The third generation brings more space, new displays and Google built-in technology, updated assistance systems, and a new trim structure. |
There is no universally best CX-5 year. A used 2021, refreshed 2022, turbocharged 2024, and new 2026 model solve different problems and sit at different price points. Compare the exact trim, engine, mileage, condition, service history, and purchase price rather than using the generation label alone.

This is particularly important when comparing first-generation parts with second-generation parts or ordering 2026 components.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a new generation?
No. The 2022 CX-5 is a substantial refresh of the second generation. It received exterior, seat, body, suspension, refinement, and Mi-Drive changes, and U.S. AWD became standard, but the third-generation redesign does not begin until 2026.
What year did the second-generation CX-5 begin?
The second generation began with the 2017 U.S. model. It followed the original 2012–2016 CX-5 and continued through the 2025 model year.
When did the CX-5 get a turbo engine?
Turbocharged power became available in higher trims for 2019. Mazda continued to offer naturally aspirated versions in other trims, and turbo availability depends on model year and configuration.
Which CX-5 years have standard AWD in the United States?
Beginning with the 2022 model year, Mazda made i-Activ AWD standard across the U.S. CX-5 lineup. Earlier U.S. model years had a more configuration-dependent drivetrain mix.
Does the 2026 CX-5 use the same engine as the older model?
At U.S. launch, the 2026 CX-5 uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD. Similar displacement and output do not make the 2026 vehicle mechanically interchangeable with earlier CX-5s.
Do CX-5 parts fit across all model years?
No. Verify the VIN, model year, generation, engine, trim, drivetrain, production date, and market before ordering. The same model name does not guarantee cross-generation compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Think of the CX-5 as three vehicles rather than one uninterrupted design: the original 2012–2016 model, the heavily refined 2017–2025 second generation, and the redesigned 2026 third generation. For used shoppers, 2019 adds the turbo opportunity, 2021 adds the larger display, and 2022 brings the most consequential refresh and standard U.S. AWD. For buyers wanting a genuinely new cabin and architecture, only the 2026 model qualifies.
