The MK3 Toyota Supra is the third-generation A70, introduced in 1986. It became a model independent of the Celica in Japan, and its engine and equipment varied by market, year and chassis code. That variation matters whether you are identifying a car, comparing versions or checking one before purchase.
What is the MK3 Supra, and what years was it made?
“MK3” refers to the third-generation Supra, whose chassis family is A70. Toyota’s Japanese history records a February 1986 model change: the Celica XX dropped “Celica” and became a separate Supra line, using a name already familiar in overseas markets. Toyota USA likewise describes the 1986 A70 as the third-generation Supra and an independent model. Toyota’s model history and Toyota USA’s 1986 Supra history provide those accounts.
A useful broad date range is 1986–1992 for A70 production. Regional sales and model-year descriptions can extend through 1993: Toyota’s UK archive lists UK sales from 1986 to 1993, while Toyota UK’s history says third-generation production continued until 1992. The apparent difference reflects market and date conventions, so check the market-specific records when a precise year matters.
Is the A70 a Celica?
No. In Japan, the preceding Celica XX name became Supra with the 1986 model change. The A70 was a separate model rather than a Celica trim. “Celica XX” may still appear in historical references to the Japanese predecessor, but it is not the A70’s model name.

What do MA70 and GA70 mean?
MA70 and GA70 are chassis/model codes associated with different A70 configurations, not interchangeable names for one universal specification. Toyota’s representative Japanese data lists MA70 examples with 3.0-liter engines and GA70 examples with 2.0-liter engines. Actual equipment depends on market and year, so use the chassis plate, engine identification and vehicle paperwork rather than assuming a badge or imported-car description settles the question.
Which engines came in the MK3 Supra?
The A70 was offered with inline-six engines, but the lineup differed across regions. Toyota’s Japanese lineage data includes these examples:

| Example and market | Engine | Published output |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese MA70 3.0-liter turbo grade | 7M-GTEU | 230 PS at 5,600 rpm, as listed by Toyota Motor Corporation |
| Japanese GA70 examples | 1G-GTEU or 1G-GEU, 2.0-liter inline-six | Not stated in the cited Toyota lineage data for these examples |
| US launch version | 7M-GE, 3.0-liter | 200 hp at 6,000 rpm and 196 lb-ft, as described by Toyota USA |
The figures should not be compared as if they were measured or rated on the same basis: Toyota’s Japanese entry uses PS, while the US account uses hp and lb-ft, and each refers to a particular market and configuration. Toyota USA also describes a later US 7M-GTE turbo version. In the UK, Toyota’s historical account identifies the naturally aspirated 7M-GE as the launch engine, followed by a turbo model. For a specific car, confirm its engine code and market history before applying any of these specifications. See Toyota’s Japanese model lineage, Toyota USA’s A70 history and Toyota UK’s history.
How is the A70 configured?
Toyota describes the A70 as a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with an inline-six and four-wheel double-wishbone suspension. The US-market history specifies four-wheel disc brakes, ventilated at the front. It also says ABS was optional on naturally aspirated versions and standard on turbo-equipped models in that market; do not assume the same fitment for every regional version. Toyota USA describes the body’s drag coefficient as 0.33.

What should you check before buying an A70?
Condition, originality and documentation can vary substantially on an older sports car. A model-specific buyer guide recommends treating these as inspection questions, not assuming every A70 has the same fault or history. Arrange an inspection by a qualified mechanic, especially if the car is modified or its identity is uncertain. CarsGuide’s Supra buying guide discusses these checks.
- Confirm identity: Match the chassis and engine identification to the registration and import paperwork. Establish the market specification and whether the drivetrain is original or swapped.
- Review service records: On a 7M-GTE car, ask specifically for documentation of head-gasket work and related service history. This is a point to investigate, not evidence that every 7M-GTE has failed.
- Inspect the roof and seals: If the car has a removable roof, check its fit, weatherstrips and surrounding areas for deterioration or signs of water entry.
- Check import and title documents: For an imported car, verify that its identity and paperwork agree and that it is legally registered in your location.
- Assess the whole configuration: Record engine and transmission, naturally aspirated or turbo setup, modifications, roof configuration, condition and available specialist support in your region.
Those details are more useful for comparing candidates than a blanket ranking of engine variants. The right choice depends on the intended use, desire for originality, budget and local parts support.

Are A70 restoration parts and manuals available?
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s A70 GR Heritage Parts catalog, dated 2026-09-01, lists selected reproduced components, including fuel senders, door handles, roof weatherstrips and propeller shafts for specified engine and transmission combinations. Toyota says GR Heritage Parts can be purchased through a Toyota dealer and warns that product design, specifications and prices may change without notice. Availability and fitment for an individual car are not guaranteed by the catalog alone; check the exact application with a dealer using the car’s VIN or chassis, market, year, engine and transmission. Toyota Gazoo Racing’s A70 parts catalog contains the listed applications.
Factory service literature is another useful reference when maintaining or restoring one. The A70 archive indexes repair manuals and wiring diagrams by year and market, so match the edition to the actual car rather than relying on a generic listing. The archive establishes that editions exist; it does not establish current stock or validate a particular seller. A70 repair-manual and wiring-diagram archive.
