The MG Cyberster is a striking, fast, two-seat electric roadster, but its character is closer to a comfortable grand tourer than a light, razor-sharp sports car. The rear-drive Trophy is the more balanced choice; the all-wheel-drive GT delivers much harder acceleration, with less range and a greater sense of weight. “Affordable” is best understood as relative positioning: UK prices vary by date and trim, and the available road tests do not establish that the Cyberster is inexpensive in absolute terms.
What the MG Cyberster is—and what “affordable” means here
The Cyberster is MG’s all-electric, two-seat roadster, offered in two UK trims: rear-wheel-drive Trophy and all-wheel-drive GT. It pairs an open-top sports-car shape with electric-car acceleration and a comfortable, long-distance bias. That combination makes it unusual, but it does not automatically make it a direct substitute for a lightweight petrol sports car.
Price claims need a date and trim attached. Top Gear reported UK launch prices of £54,995 for the 335 bhp car and £59,995 for the 503 bhp car in May 2024. What Car? lists a £55,245 RRP for the 77 kWh Trophy on its review page. These are different snapshots, not a single current price list; check MG’s live UK offer and the exact car’s specification before treating either figure as a quote. Top Gear’s May 2024 first drive and What Car?’s review provide the dated references.
MG Motor Europe’s model page presents a headline maximum of 375 kW (502 hp), 0–100 km/h in 3.20 seconds and up to 507 km of range. Those are manufacturer figures in the Europe page’s market and units; they should not be conflated with UK trim-specific figures below. MG Europe design director Carl Gotham describes it as “A striking, all-electric roadster which promises to be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past.” MG Motor Europe’s Cyberster page contains the claim and quote.

Which Cyberster trim suits you?
The choice is not simply slower versus faster. The Trophy sacrifices some straight-line drama for more range and, according to the reviewers, a more nuanced feel. The GT turns acceleration into its main event.
| UK trim | Power and drive | Performance and official range | Road-test character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trophy | 335 bhp; single motor, rear-wheel drive | 0–62 mph in 5.0 seconds; 316 miles official range, as reported by UK review sources | Brisk enough for road use; reviewers find it the more balanced or nuanced-handling version. |
| GT | 503 bhp; dual motor, all-wheel drive | 0–62 mph in 3.2 seconds; 276 miles official range, as reported by UK review sources | Much more forceful acceleration, but heavier and less agile; choose it for the extra punch rather than sharper handling. |
The trim figures and impressions are reported in Top Gear’s first drive, Top Gear’s UK driving review and What Car?’s review. “Official range” is not a promise of the distance every driver will cover: speed, temperature, route and driving style affect real-world results.

How it feels on the road
Quiet and comfortable at everyday speeds
Top Gear’s May 2024 first drive found the rear-drive car quiet and comfortable in town and on motorways, with a supple ride. Its reviewer saw the Cyberster as a small GT rather than a traditional sports car. That distinction matters: the car’s easy pace and open-top presence can be more appealing on a long, flowing drive than on a tight, demanding road.
Fast, but not light on its feet
In its December 2024 UK driving review, Top Gear described a heavy car with a calmer approach than a Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4, soft suspension and less agility when pushed hard. What Car? likewise judged it fast and well equipped but less agile than petrol rivals, and noted a fidgety ride. These are reviewers’ driving impressions, not instrumented, head-to-head measurements. The takeaway is a trade-off: comfort and powerful acceleration are central to the Cyberster’s appeal, while keen drivers may prefer the lighter, more responsive character of a petrol roadster. Top Gear’s driving review and What Car?’s review discuss those judgments.

Range and charging: distinguish the claims
For UK trim comparisons, the review sources report 316 miles of official range for the Trophy and 276 miles for the GT. Top Gear’s early drive reported about 250 miles in real driving for the smaller-battery version; that was one reviewer’s experience, not a standardized range test or a guarantee for other routes and conditions. MG Europe separately states up to 507 km, a market-specific headline that should not be swapped into the UK trim comparison.
On charging, MG Europe estimates a 10–80% charge in 38 minutes using a 144 kW DC public rapid charger. What Car? reports a 144 kW maximum charge rate and 39 minutes for 10–80% in its UK review. These are manufacturer/review-page figures under stated charging conditions, not a fixed time at every charger. Actual charging depends on the car’s battery temperature and state of charge, the charger’s capability and conditions during the session. MG Motor Europe and What Car? give their respective figures.

How it compares with petrol sports cars
The Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 and Alpine A110 are useful reference points for the kind of experience buyers may be considering, but the available sources do not provide a consistent current price-and-specification comparison. A fair decision depends on more than peak power: compare the same purchase date and trim, then weigh acceleration against official range and charging, ride comfort against handling agility, and the practicality of a two-seat convertible against your actual use.
- Consider the Cyberster if you want an electric open-top car with dramatic styling, strong acceleration and a more relaxed touring character.
- Look closely at the Trophy if range and a more composed handling impression matter more than the quickest acceleration.
- Look closely at the GT if all-wheel drive and maximum straight-line performance are priorities, and you accept the reported range and agility trade-offs.
- Try petrol alternatives if lightweight feel and precise responses on demanding roads are the main reasons you want a sports car.
Ownership details to verify before buying
What Car? reports a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty; confirm the current warranty document and any conditions with MG for the specific vehicle. The same review said no Euro NCAP safety report was available at the time of its review, so that is not evidence of a rating either way. It also described Cyberster reliability as not yet established and cited MG’s last-place finish among 31 brands in the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey. That survey result concerns the brand in that survey year, not a Cyberster-specific failure rate. What Car?’s review sets out these qualifications.
