Yes—as an editorial comparison, the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin is a compelling Jimny alternative, but the two were not a documented factory rivalry. The Pinin is the European relative of the Pajero iO, a compact Mitsubishi 4WD offered in three- and five-door forms. The Suzuki Jimny JB64 is a Japanese kei 4WD with a ladder frame and rigid-axle suspension. Their shared small-off-roader purpose makes the comparison useful; their different markets, versions and specifications mean it is not a like-for-like contest.
What is the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin?
The Pajero Pinin is the European-market relative of Mitsubishi’s Pajero iO. Mitsubishi says the iO launched in Japan in June 1998 as a three-door, with a five-door version added in August. It was positioned between the larger Pajero and the smaller Pajero Mini, and Mitsubishi describes it as having a new chassis and body rather than being based on the same minicar platform. The launch model used a 1.8-litre GDI petrol engine and introduced Super Select 4WD-i. Mitsubishi’s Pajero iO history provides the manufacturer’s account.
For Europe, Mitsubishi had the Pinin produced at Pininfarina in Italy. The company’s 2000 annual report identifies GDI, Super Select 4WD and Pininfarina design and production technology as distinguishing features. Names varied by market: Pajero iO was used in Japan and elsewhere, while UK-market examples were also known as Shogun Pinin or Pinin. The badge alone does not establish a vehicle’s exact year, engine or equipment.
How do the Pinin and Jimny compare?
The comparison below uses a selected five-door Pinin catalog entry and Suzuki’s Japanese JB64 Jimny specification. These are reference points, not equivalent trims or a controlled performance test.

Pinin figures are from AutoCentrum’s technical-data catalog; JB64 figures are from Suzuki’s JB64 history and specifications. The Pinin’s catalog dimensions make this selected five-door longer and wider than the Japanese kei Jimny, while the JB64 is slightly taller. These measurements should not be generalized to every Pinin or every Jimny: body style, market and model year matter.
What does Super Select 4WD-i add?
Mitsubishi lists four settings for the iO’s Super Select 4WD-i: 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLC. The manufacturer says these let the driver select a mode suited to the road surface. This is a useful distinction in the comparison: Mitsubishi’s description emphasizes selectable drivetrain modes, while Suzuki’s JB64 materials highlight its ladder-frame and rigid-axle layout. The cited Mitsubishi history entry is not a substitute for an owner’s manual, so operating limits and procedures should be checked in the manual for the specific vehicle and market.

Which is better for off-roading?
The available specifications do not establish a winner. They describe different engineering choices, not a comparative trail test: Suzuki specifies the JB64’s ladder frame, three-link rigid-axle coil suspension and low-range gearing, while Mitsubishi lists the Pinin/iO’s four Super Select 4WD-i modes. Ground clearance, gearing, tires, condition and driver skill can all matter in real use, and the cited material does not provide a controlled comparison of those factors.
Nor do the sources establish that Mitsubishi and Suzuki positioned these named models as direct factory competitors. Mitsubishi places the iO within its Pajero range; Suzuki describes the Jimny through its own small-4WD lineage. Calling the Pinin a Jimny rival is therefore a useful way to frame a buyer’s comparison, not a claim about a documented historical contest.

What should you check when comparing used examples?
Start with the individual vehicle rather than the model name. Pinin/iO engines and dimensions vary by market and year; the Japanese JB64 specification applies to that kei Jimny generation, not all export Jimnys or the five-door model. A secondary German-language overview reports broader Pinin dimensions and European engine variants, but it should not replace original documentation for a specific vehicle.
- Confirm the market name, model year, body style, engine and drivetrain from the vehicle documents and identification plates.
- Check the original market brochure or year-specific owner’s manual for equipment and 4WD operating instructions.
- Have condition assessed by a qualified local specialist. Historical specifications do not establish current reliability, parts availability, local prices or the condition of a particular vehicle.
For broader Pinin production and variant context, see the German-language overview; treat it as a secondary cross-check, not vehicle-specific proof.
