At the company’s June 18, 2026 annual shareholders’ meeting, president and COO Keisuke Kishiura said there were no concrete plans to bring the Evo back. His comments followed a 2025 remark in which senior engineering fellow Kaoru Sawase called a new Evo his “personal dream”—an aspiration, not an approved car program.
What did Mitsubishi mean by a “dream” for a new Evo?
After the 2025 Tokyo show, Sawase told Australian outlet Drive, as reported by Car and Driver: “We have a dream, of course, for Lancer Evolution. It’s my personal dream.” He left open the possibility of a future car and suggested it would need to reflect electrification.
Sawase’s words describe a personal ambition from a senior engineer. They do not establish that Mitsubishi has funded, approved, or begun developing a successor.
Will Mitsubishi bring back the Lancer Evolution?
The more recent company-position statement came at Mitsubishi Motors’ 57th annual shareholders’ meeting on June 18, 2026. In response to a question about bringing back the Lancer Evolution, Diamante, and Galant, Kishiura called the models important cars and “treasures.” He then said there were no concrete plans to introduce them at that time, while expressing a hope that Mitsubishi could become a company able to make such cars again. The remarks were reported by Car Watch; the English wording is a translation of the Japanese report.

That answer gives enthusiasts a reason to hope, but not a revival announcement. It sets no schedule, budget, approval, or product specifications.
Would a new Lancer Evolution be electrified?
Electrification has been raised as a possible requirement or direction for a hypothetical future Evo, but Mitsubishi has not confirmed a powertrain. There is no announced basis for calling it a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric car, and no confirmed platform or technical specification.

Mitsubishi says its broader product and collaboration strategy emphasizes off-road and ASEAN-market strengths, working with partners, and making further use of its PHEV and hybrid technology. That is context for the company’s direction, not evidence that an Evo is in development.
Why the Evo’s engineering legacy still matters
Mitsubishi’s own history helps explain why a revival carries significance beyond the nameplate. The company describes the Lancer Evolution as part of the development path for its four-wheel-control technology. The Evolution VII introduced Active Center Differential (ACD), and the Evolution VIII used Super AYC. The final Evolution X used S-AWC, integrating front-to-rear drive-force distribution, left-to-right torque transfer, ABS, and Active Stability Control braking functions. Mitsubishi outlines this history in its four-wheel-control technology overview.

Mitsubishi also says the latest Outlander PHEV’s S-AWC uses independent front and rear electric motors alongside braking-based AYC. That shows how the company’s control-system technology has continued to evolve; it does not mean a future Evo would use the same system.

No. At the same shareholders’ meeting, Kishiura also described a factory return to the World Rally Championship as a personal dream and said there were no concrete plans at that time. His WRC ambition is separate from the status of a road-going Lancer Evolution, and neither comment confirms a competition program or a new production car.
