The Mitsubishi 4G63 is a 2.0-liter inline-four in the 4G6 Sirius engine family. Its turbocharged versions became closely associated with the Galant VR-4 and Lancer Evolution, but “4G63” does not mean one fixed specification: the engine appeared in different configurations, and details vary by car, generation, and market.

What is a Mitsubishi 4G63 engine?

Mitsubishi began producing the 4G6 Sirius family in September 1979 and added the 2.0-liter 4G63 in April 1980. Mitsubishi describes the family as water-cooled inline-four gasoline engines developed to fill the displacement gap between its 4G3 and 4G5 families. The company says the 4G63 became its flagship passenger-car engine. Mitsubishi Motors’ company history gives the family’s production span as 1979–2016 and total output as 6,360,000 engines; those figures cover the 4G6 family, not the 4G63 alone.

The original design goal for the 4G6 family was a small, light, low-cost, high-performance engine. Mitsubishi’s comparison of 20 kg less weight and 65 mm less length is against the 4G5 family; it is not a measurement of every 4G63 installation.

How did the 4G63 become a performance icon?

Early high-performance applications

In 1984, Mitsubishi says its 4G63 Sirius DASH appeared in the Galant Σ and Starion, and was the first to achieve 200 horsepower for front-wheel-drive vehicles. That milestone belongs to the Sirius DASH application, not every 4G63.

Galant VR-4

The Galant VR-4 launched in December 1987 with an intercooled DOHC turbo 4G63. Mitsubishi lists output as high as 205 PS at 6,000 rpm for that application. This is a model-specific rating, not a universal output figure for the engine family. Mitsubishi’s corporate history provides the chronology and rating.

Lancer Evolution

The 4G63’s connection to the Lancer Evolution came with continual engineering changes, not a single unchanged engine carried through every generation. Mitsubishi’s Evolution history records that the Evolution VII received an improved turbocharger and intercooler, a magnesium rocker cover, a hollow camshaft, and altered torque characteristics. Evolution IX introduced intake-side MIVEC to the series’ turbo engine.

First-generation Eclipse turbo models

Mitsubishi Motors North America’s history page search result identifies the first-generation Eclipse GS-T and GSX as using a turbo 4G63, with output up to 195 hp. The accessible page does not expose that passage, so treat the figure as a North American history-page result rather than a fully documented specification for every Eclipse market or trim. Mitsubishi Motors North America history

Is the 4G63 turbocharged?

Not always. The 4G63 designation covers turbocharged and naturally aspirated applications, as well as different layouts and hardware. The turbocharged DOHC versions are the ones most associated with the Galant VR-4, Evolution, and Eclipse GS-T/GSX. A technical reference from Haltech describes the DOHC turbo configurations it covers; it should not be treated as a specification for every 4G63. Haltech’s 4G63 reference

Haltech lists 1,998 cc for the turbo engine reference and describes some Galant VR-4 and first-generation Eclipse turbo versions as having 7.8:1 compression, a dual-intake-runner Cyclone system on some models, and dual-post waste-spark ignition. Those details are application-specific. The same reference lists Evolution I and II at 8.5:1 compression and Evolution III at 9.0:1, illustrating why a single compression ratio cannot describe all turbo 4G63s.

A workshop-manual search result gives 1,997 cc, an 85.0 mm bore, and an 88.0 mm stroke for a SOHC 4G63. The manual’s publication date is not established and its PDF could not be opened, so these figures should be treated as provisional and specific to that SOHC version—not generalized to the entire family. What is the difference between a 4G63 and a 4G63T?

“4G63” is the engine designation; “4G63T” is commonly used to distinguish a turbocharged version. The added T is a useful shorthand, not a guarantee of one uniform turbo specification. Turbocharger, intercooler, compression, ignition, intake, sensors, and other hardware vary by application and generation. Mitsubishi’s Evolution chronology documents major revisions, while Haltech’s DOHC turbo reference details selected generation differences.

Haltech notes that Evolution IV and V brought changes including engine orientation, ignition, and intake components. These differences matter when comparing engines or diagnosing a car: identify the specific vehicle and engine configuration before relying on a general 4G63 or 4G63T description.

How should you identify a 4G63 version?

For a meaningful comparison, start with the vehicle rather than the engine nickname. Record the make and model, model year, market, and whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Then verify the applicable engine generation and configuration in a vehicle-specific service manual or reliable technical reference.

  • Vehicle and market: the same model name can cover different specifications by year and region.
  • Induction and layout: establish naturally aspirated versus turbocharged and SOHC versus DOHC where the application documentation confirms it.
  • Generation-specific hardware: check compression, intake and turbo hardware, engine orientation, ignition, sensors, and control components against the exact version.
  • Output rating: retain the vehicle, market, rating convention, and stated conditions with any horsepower or power figure.
  • Service and parts: use a manual and parts catalog that explicitly cover the car’s year, market, and engine version.

Which 4G63 parts fit your car?

There is no safe family-wide fitment answer from the engine name alone. The documented changes across applications and Evolution generations mean a part should be checked against the exact car, model year, market, and engine version. Before ordering or beginning a repair, confirm the part number and procedure in application-specific documentation; do not infer interchangeability from “4G63” or “4G63T” alone.
