Its wide tires and front-and-rear suspension can smooth out gravel and dirt paths, but independent riding coverage found it heavy and less nimble on larger branches and loose gravel. There is no evidence that it can ride trails that would destroy most other e-bikes.
What kind of trails can the MOD Black 3 handle?
Available riding coverage supports using the Black 3 on gravel, dirt paths and other relatively casual off-road routes. A Tom’s Guide review republished by inkl.com reported a comfortable ride over curbs, gravel and dirt paths, but found the bike less enjoyable than a dedicated e-mountain bike over larger branches and loose gravel. The reviewer attributed that difference in part to the Black 3’s weight and less nimble handling. Read the Black 3 riding review.
That is evidence of mixed-surface versatility, not proof of durability or control on steep, rocky, highly technical trails. “Full suspension” describes the bike’s layout; it does not by itself establish that the frame, suspension, tires or components are suited to aggressive mountain biking.
What equipment does the current Black 3 have?
MOD’s current product listing gives these specifications. They describe the manufacturer’s product, not independently verified trail performance. See MOD’s Black 3 product listing.

| Item | Manufacturer-listed specification | What it means for trail use |
|---|---|---|
| Motor | 750 W geared hub motor; 69 Nm torque | The listing establishes the motor type and stated torque, but not how it compares with mid-drive systems on technical climbs. |
| Battery | Removable 48 V, 15 Ah (720 Wh) Samsung battery | Capacity is a specification, not a measured trail-range result. |
| Tires | 27.5 × 3.00-inch multi-terrain tires | The three-inch width suits mixed surfaces, though width alone does not establish grip on every trail. |
| Front suspension | Mozo fork with 100 mm travel | Travel is the manufacturer’s stated figure; the available evidence does not establish performance on demanding descents. |
| Rear suspension | EXA air shock | The listing identifies an air shock but does not provide a rear-travel figure in the cited specification. |
| Brakes | Hydraulic brakes with 180 mm rotors | The listed hardware does not substitute for comparative braking tests on steep or prolonged descents. |
| Weight | 65.5 lb without the battery | MOD’s stated figure is for the bike without its battery; the added battery makes handling and lifting a practical consideration. |
Is it a real electric mountain bike?
The Black 3 has mountain-bike-like features, including suspension at both ends and wide tires, but the evidence here does not establish it as a dedicated e-MTB for technical terrain. In the available Black 3 review, the contrast with a dedicated e-mountain bike was most apparent on larger branches and loose gravel, where the MOD felt less nimble. No head-to-head test establishes how it performs against specific e-MTB models on climbs, descents, braking or durability.
Before taking it onto demanding trails, look beyond the word “full suspension.” Consider the route’s obstacles and steepness, the bike’s weight, tire tread, suspension travel, braking demands and whether the drivetrain and motor configuration suit the climbs you expect. The cited information does not establish a trail-difficulty rating or a manufacturer-approved limit for aggressive riding.

Which Black 3 configuration are you considering?
MOD lists a separate Class 1 Black 3 configuration. That listing specifies torque assist and a 20 mph top speed, with the same nominal 750 W motor and 720 Wh battery as the headline Black 3 equipment. Do not assume every Black 3 has the same controls or class: verify the exact configuration before buying or riding, and check access rules with the local land manager or trail operator. E-bike access varies by jurisdiction and trail. Check the Class 1 listing.
What range does MOD claim?
MOD advertises up to 50 miles on one battery and up to 100 miles with dual batteries. These are manufacturer claims, not independently measured current Black 3 trail-range results. Actual range varies with conditions and use, so treat the figures as upper-limit claims rather than a promise for a particular route. MOD’s listing gives the range claims.

Does the older MOD Black review apply?
No. Electric Bike Report’s 2024 review covered an earlier MOD Black configuration with a 350 W mid-drive motor, 557 Wh battery and 90 Nm torque—not the current Black 3’s 750 W geared hub motor and 720 Wh battery. Its reported range tests—29.6 miles in PAS 5 and 84 miles in PAS 1—belong to that earlier test bike and its test conditions. They are not Black 3 range figures. Read the earlier MOD Black review.
