Quick answer: Standard Apple CarPlay does not duplicate your entire iPhone screen. It displays a separate, vehicle-optimized interface for compatible apps such as Maps, music, calls, messages, EV charging, parking, and selected other categories. If you want the iPhone Home Screen, Safari, games, or unsupported video apps on the car display, you need a separate display method such as an HDMI connection or hardware that explicitly supports iPhone mirroring.
There is also a newer, narrower option: AirPlay video in the car. In a compatible vehicle, it can send video from a supported iPhone app to the CarPlay display while the vehicle is parked. It is not unrestricted iPhone screen mirroring.
| What you want to do | Use this | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Use Maps, music, calls, messages, and supported apps | Wired or wireless CarPlay | Only CarPlay-compatible app interfaces appear—not the whole iPhone screen. |
| Duplicate the entire iPhone display | An HDMI input, compatible aftermarket mirroring hardware, or a receiver that explicitly supports iPhone mirroring | The car must support the required hardware, and video may be disabled while moving. |
| Watch compatible video while parked | AirPlay video in the car, if the automaker and app support it | It is vehicle-specific, app-specific, and intended for use while parked. |
CarPlay, screen mirroring, AirPlay video, and HDMI are different things
Product listings and older setup guides often use mirror your iPhone to CarPlay as shorthand for connecting an iPhone to a car. Technically, that wording is misleading. These are four separate technologies:
- CarPlay is an Apple-controlled interface that compatible iPhone apps provide to the vehicle display. It is not a copy of the iPhone Home Screen. Apple describes it as putting the things people want to do with iPhone while driving onto the vehicle display; see Apple’s CarPlay documentation.
- Screen mirroring duplicates the iPhone display, including the Home Screen and, in principle, arbitrary apps. A normal CarPlay receiver is not automatically an AirPlay screen-mirroring receiver.
- AirPlay video in the car is a video-focused capability for supported vehicles. It can send compatible video from an iPhone to the car display without making the entire iPhone interface available.
- HDMI mirroring is a wired external-display connection. If the head unit has an HDMI input that accepts the signal, it is the clearest way to display the iPhone screen on the vehicle display.
A wireless CarPlay adapter is different again. A conventional adapter normally converts an existing wired CarPlay connection into wireless CarPlay. It does not automatically add YouTube, Netflix, Safari, or full-screen iPhone mirroring.

First, confirm that your car and iPhone support CarPlay
You need support on both sides of the connection:
- The country or region must support CarPlay.
- Your vehicle’s exact make, model year, trim, and factory equipment must support it, or the car must have a compatible aftermarket receiver.
- The iPhone should be updated to the latest available iOS.
- The car stereo or infotainment system should have current manufacturer firmware.
Do not assume that every car from a particular year supports CarPlay. Availability varies by make, model, year, trim, region, and installed equipment. Check Apple’s CarPlay available-models list and your vehicle manual. Apple also lists compatible aftermarket systems from manufacturers including Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and others on its CarPlay page.
Version note: This guide is time-stamped to August 10, 2026. Apple’s release page lists iOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026, as the latest stable iOS version at that point. Apple’s WWDC26 material discusses expanded video capabilities for iOS 27; previewed or forthcoming features should not be treated as available in every iOS 26.6 installation or every CarPlay vehicle.
How to connect an iPhone to ordinary CarPlay
Wired CarPlay
Use this method if the vehicle has wired CarPlay or if wireless pairing is unavailable.
- Start the vehicle. Complete the initial setup while parked.
- Make sure Siri is enabled on the iPhone. If you are unsure, search for Siri in the iPhone Settings app and enable it.
- Find the CarPlay-capable USB port. It may have a CarPlay, smartphone, or similar icon. A vehicle can have several USB ports while only one supports CarPlay data.
- Connect the iPhone directly to that port with a suitable USB cable. A USB-C iPhone may need a compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable if the car has a USB-A port.
- Unlock the iPhone if prompted and approve the connection.
- If the CarPlay Home screen does not appear automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
Apple’s current CarPlay connection instructions recommend the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port and selecting the CarPlay icon manually when necessary.
What you should see: You should see the CarPlay Home screen with compatible app icons—not the iPhone Lock Screen, Home Screen, or a complete copy of the phone display. If the phone only charges, jump to Troubleshooting.
Wireless CarPlay
Wireless CarPlay normally uses Bluetooth for discovery and a Wi-Fi connection for the CarPlay session. Both must be available.
- Start the vehicle and leave it parked during setup.
- Enable Siri.
- Put the vehicle stereo into wireless CarPlay, wireless, or Bluetooth-pairing mode. Some vehicles use a press-and-hold of the steering-wheel voice-command button to begin pairing.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Choose the vehicle under Available Cars, or select the vehicle identified by the infotainment system.
- Approve wireless CarPlay and any pairing prompts.
- Leave both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. If the car has a dedicated CarPlay Wi-Fi network, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap that network, and confirm that Auto-Join is enabled.
These are the pairing steps described in Apple’s iPhone-to-car connection guidance and CarPlay troubleshooting guidance. Some vehicles first require a wired connection before they offer wireless CarPlay on later trips.
Customize the apps shown in CarPlay
Installing an app on the iPhone does not make it appear in CarPlay. Only apps with a compatible CarPlay interface can be added.

Why the entire iPhone Home Screen does not appear
CarPlay is an app-specific projection system, not a general-purpose remote display. A compatible app supplies a CarPlay interface designed for the vehicle screen and controls. Apps appear on the CarPlay Home screen only when they support CarPlay and fall within Apple’s supported categories and rules.
That is why an iPhone can have dozens of apps while CarPlay shows only a smaller selection. The limitation is not usually caused by a missing permission, a bad cable, or a setting that needs to be unlocked. An arbitrary iPhone app cannot simply be projected onto ordinary CarPlay because it is installed on the phone.
This distinction matters for common requests:
- Maps, Apple Music, Spotify, podcasts, calls, and messages: Use standard CarPlay when the app and vehicle are supported.
- YouTube, Netflix, Safari, games, photos, and the iPhone Home Screen: These do not become available through ordinary CarPlay just because the iPhone is connected.
- Video in a supported vehicle while parked: Check the AirPlay video option described below.
- Full display duplication: Use an HDMI path or hardware that explicitly advertises iPhone screen mirroring, and verify the exact compatibility details.
How to mirror the entire iPhone screen with HDMI
An HDMI connection is the most straightforward genuine screen-mirroring route when the vehicle or aftermarket head unit provides an HDMI input. This is not CarPlay; it is an external display connection.
What you need
- A car display or aftermarket head unit with an accessible HDMI input.
- An HDMI cable.
- The correct iPhone adapter or cable:
- For a supported USB-C iPhone, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable.
- For a Lightning iPhone, Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable.
- A way to select HDMI, External Input, or the equivalent source on the head unit.
- Power for the iPhone or adapter if the hardware requires it.
Before buying anything, verify that the port is an HDMI input, not just a USB charging port or a USB port intended for CarPlay. Apple’s USB-C external-display documentation identifies supported USB-C iPhone families and model-specific exceptions; USB-C by itself should not be treated as a guarantee of video output. Apple also documents the Lightning and USB-C connection process in its wired display guide.
HDMI setup steps
- Put the vehicle in Park. The head unit may refuse external video unless the parking condition is met.
- Connect the appropriate adapter to the iPhone.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the adapter and the car’s HDMI input.
- Connect power to the adapter or iPhone if required.
- On the vehicle display, select HDMI, External Input, or the corresponding source.
- Unlock the iPhone if necessary. The iPhone display should then appear on the external display.
HDMI mirroring does not automatically provide CarPlay’s touch interface, steering-wheel integration, Siri behavior, or app layout. Touch control from the vehicle screen depends on the head unit and its hardware; many HDMI inputs are display-only.
HDMI limitations
- The vehicle may disable external video when the car is moving.
- Some adapters need separate power and may produce a blank screen when underpowered.
- Resolution and signal compatibility depend on the iPhone, adapter, cable, and head unit.
- Movies, television shows, and streaming apps can be blocked by HDCP or other content-protection requirements. Apple covers these limitations in its Digital AV adapter troubleshooting guide.
- Extra converters, extension cables, and adapter chains create more points of failure.
How AirPlay video in the car works
Apple now documents AirPlay video in the car as an automaker-enabled capability. It is intended for watching compatible video on a supported CarPlay display when the vehicle is not being driven. It should not be confused with unrestricted Control Center screen mirroring.
Conditional setup steps
- Park the vehicle and leave it in Park.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s supported CarPlay system.
- Open a video app that supports AirPlay video.
- Start playing the video on the iPhone.
- Tap the app’s AirPlay button or its output/share control.
- Select the compatible car display if it appears.
- If the vehicle, iPhone, and app all support the feature, the video should appear on the car display.
Apple’s WWDC26 CarPlay video session describes selecting the car display while video is playing and explains that video can become unavailable when the vehicle is being driven. Depending on the vehicle implementation, playback may stop or fall back to audio-only.

What AirPlay video in the car does not do
- It does not mirror the iPhone Home Screen.
- It does not make Safari, games, photos, or every video app appear on CarPlay.
- It does not work in every CarPlay-equipped vehicle.
- The automaker must implement the vehicle capability.
- The video app must support AirPlay video, and content-protection rules may still apply.
Do not open Control Center > Screen Mirroring and expect every CarPlay receiver to appear. Apple’s normal AirPlay and Screen Mirroring instructions refer to Apple TV, AirPlay-compatible smart televisions, Macs, and other compatible receivers. Ordinary CarPlay is not automatically one of them.
Third-party hardware: what the product names really mean
Third-party products use terms such as CarPlay adapter, AirPlay receiver, screen mirror, video adapter, and AI box inconsistently. Read the technical specifications rather than relying on the product title.

Wireless CarPlay adapters
A conventional wireless adapter is primarily a convenience device. It usually plugs into a vehicle’s existing wired CarPlay USB port and creates a wireless CarPlay connection. For example, Carlinkit’s 5.0/2air documentation describes converting wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto to wireless operation.
That type of adapter normally does not add full iPhone mirroring, YouTube, Netflix, or arbitrary apps. A listing that says wireless CarPlay should be read as wireless access to the same CarPlay functions, not as an unrestricted display connection.
AI boxes
Some AI boxes contain their own Android operating system and run video or other apps on the car display. They may use the vehicle’s wired CarPlay connection as the path to the screen, but they are not simply duplicating the iPhone display. A vendor example is the Android-based Carlinkit T-Box category; this link is an example of the product type, not a universal recommendation.
Potential advantages: an independent app environment and possible access to video apps while parked.
Trade-offs: compatibility may depend on wired CarPlay, the box may need Wi-Fi or cellular data, performance can vary, lag is possible, and software support depends on the vendor. It is not the same as accessing every app and state of your iPhone.
Products that advertise AirPlay or iPhone mirroring
Some aftermarket devices explicitly claim to mirror an iPhone over AirPlay or another protocol. Treat those as vendor-specific implementations rather than Apple CarPlay features. Before buying, confirm all of the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Your exact iPhone model and connector are supported.
- Your vehicle or receiver has the required wired CarPlay, HDMI, or other input.
- The product provides full-screen mirroring rather than only selected video playback.
- Car-screen touch control is supported if that matters to you.
- Your intended streaming services are compatible with the device’s content-protection requirements.
- The vendor supplies firmware updates, clear installation instructions, and a practical return policy.
Do not assume that a product advertised as an AI box, wireless CarPlay adapter, or AirPlay receiver provides the same result. Verify the exact function you want.
Aftermarket receivers with HDMI
If genuine iPhone display mirroring is a priority, an aftermarket head unit with a documented HDMI input may be more predictable than a generic dongle. Confirm the receiver’s input behavior, parked-video restrictions, supported resolutions, touch behavior, and compatibility with the vehicle’s steering-wheel controls before installation.

The iPhone charges, but CarPlay does not start
Charging proves that the port is supplying power; it does not prove that the port supports data or CarPlay. Check for a charge-only port, the wrong USB socket, a damaged or incompatible cable, or an adapter chain that carries power but disrupts data. If the vehicle supports it, select the CarPlay logo manually. Apple recommends a direct USB connection when combinations of USB-C, Lightning, and other adapters cause problems.
Wireless CarPlay keeps disconnecting
- Confirm that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both enabled.
- Check that the iPhone has joined the vehicle’s CarPlay Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the vehicle network, and confirm Auto-Join.
- Make sure the vehicle is not attempting to connect to another paired phone.
- Update the vehicle’s infotainment software.
- Forget the vehicle under Settings > General > CarPlay and pair it again.
An app does not appear in CarPlay
This is usually expected rather than a connection fault. Only apps that provide a compatible CarPlay interface appear on the CarPlay Home screen. Check Settings > General > CarPlay > your vehicle > Customize. If the app is absent from both the CarPlay screen and the Customize list, the iPhone cannot add it to ordinary CarPlay. Apple explains the supported-app behavior in Use other apps with CarPlay.
Control Center Screen Mirroring cannot find the car
That is normal for a standard CarPlay receiver. CarPlay pairing uses USB or the vehicle’s wireless CarPlay process; it does not use the ordinary Screen Mirroring picker. The car will appear there only if the vehicle or an attached device separately supports AirPlay video or AirPlay mirroring.
HDMI shows a blank screen
- Switch the head unit to the correct HDMI or external-input source.
- Confirm that the input is enabled and is not limited to a rear-seat display or parked mode.
- Check that the adapter matches the iPhone’s connector.
- Provide power to the adapter if its instructions require it.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Remove extension cables, converters, and unnecessary signal adapters.
- Check whether the display accepts the iPhone’s output signal.
- Test a different app. A movie or streaming app may be blocked by HDCP even when the iPhone interface displays correctly.
Apple’s Digital AV adapter guidance covers connection, app, and HDCP-related limitations.
AirPlay video is unavailable
Check the conditions one at a time:
- The vehicle must support Apple’s video-in-the-car capability; ordinary CarPlay support is not enough.
- The vehicle may need to be in Park and report that it is not being driven.
- The app must support AirPlay video.
- The iPhone, vehicle firmware, and CarPlay implementation must expose the feature.
- Availability may vary by vehicle configuration or region.
- Content protection may prevent a particular video from being sent to the car.
Apple notes that video apps can be unavailable or fall back to audio-only, including when driving conditions change. The developer documentation for supportsVideoPlayback describes the vehicle capability that apps can detect.

Video stops when the vehicle shifts into Drive
That behavior is expected and is part of the parked-use safety boundary. Do not bypass a motion lock, disable a vehicle safety system, or use a jailbreak tweak to force video playback while driving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and unsupported workarounds
Video, games, web browsing, and unrestricted screen mirroring are distractions when the vehicle is moving. Use HDMI mirroring, AirPlay video, AI boxes, and similar features only when parked and only as permitted by the vehicle manufacturer and local requirements. A passenger can operate a device only when doing so does not distract the driver or violate the vehicle’s restrictions.
Jailbreaking or otherwise modifying iOS is not a normal CarPlay solution. Apple warns that unauthorized modification can create security vulnerabilities, instability, battery drain, disrupted services, update problems, and possible loss of service support. See Apple’s guidance on unauthorized modification of iOS.
CarPlay Ultra should not be confused with unrestricted mirroring either. Apple describes CarPlay Ultra as extending the CarPlay experience across vehicle screens and integrating vehicle information and controls. It remains a CarPlay experience, not a duplicate of every iPhone screen or every iPhone app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mirror Netflix to CarPlay?
Not through ordinary CarPlay. A compatible vehicle and app may support AirPlay video while parked, but that is not guaranteed. An HDMI connection can mirror the iPhone display when the head unit accepts it, although Netflix or another streaming service may impose HDCP or other content restrictions.
Can I mirror YouTube to CarPlay?
The standard CarPlay Home screen does not provide arbitrary YouTube screen mirroring. Check whether your vehicle supports AirPlay video in the car, use a compatible HDMI input, or consider hardware that explicitly supports the function. Keep video playback parked.
Can I use Control Center > Screen Mirroring with CarPlay?
Not with ordinary CarPlay. Standard CarPlay uses wired USB or the vehicle’s wireless CarPlay pairing process. The car will appear in the Screen Mirroring picker only if it or an attached device separately supports AirPlay mirroring or AirPlay video.
Does a wireless CarPlay adapter mirror the iPhone?
Usually no. A conventional wireless CarPlay adapter generally converts an existing wired CarPlay connection to wireless operation. It does not normally add the iPhone Home Screen or unsupported apps.
Can I mirror an iPhone 15 or newer through USB-C?
Supported USB-C iPhones can connect to compatible external displays through USB-C or a suitable USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, but support is model-specific. The car also needs an HDMI input or another compatible external-display path. USB-C alone does not guarantee that the vehicle can receive video.
Can I mirror a Lightning iPhone?
Yes, when the car display has a compatible HDMI input, using a Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable. The head unit must accept the signal, and protected video may still be blocked.
Why does my iPhone charge but not show CarPlay?
The USB port may be charge-only, you may be using the wrong port, or the cable may provide power without a reliable data connection. Try the vehicle’s CarPlay-marked port, a direct known-good cable, manual selection of the CarPlay logo, and Apple’s pairing and troubleshooting steps.
Does CarPlay Ultra mirror the whole iPhone?
No. CarPlay Ultra expands CarPlay across vehicle displays and adds deeper vehicle integration, but it remains a controlled CarPlay interface rather than a duplicate of every iPhone screen.
Can AirPlay video in the car work while driving?
It is intended for use while the vehicle is not being driven. A compatible system may stop video or switch to audio-only when the car enters a driving state. Do not bypass that restriction.
Does every CarPlay vehicle support video in the car?
No. The automaker must implement the video-in-the-car capability, the app must support AirPlay video, and the iPhone and vehicle software must be compatible. iOS 26.6 does not make the feature universal.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use wired or wireless CarPlay for supported driving apps; it will not show the entire iPhone screen. For genuine full-screen mirroring, use a compatible HDMI input or hardware that explicitly supports iPhone mirroring. For video, AirPlay video in the car may work only with a supported vehicle and app, and only while parked. A regular wireless CarPlay dongle removes the cable—it does not unlock unrestricted mirroring.
