Mercedes-Benz’s smaller G-Class, widely nicknamed the “Little G,” is reportedly expected in 2027, with both combustion and electric power planned. JLR is also developing a smaller Defender, but its name was still unconfirmed in June 2026. The available reports describe a likely rivalry—not a confirmed “Defender 90” model or a final specification comparison.
Is Mercedes making a smaller G-Class?
Yes. Autocar reported on 23 February 2026 that Mercedes-Benz was developing a smaller G-Class, commonly called the “Little G.” The nickname is not necessarily the production name. Autocar described it as the expected entry point to a broader G-Class range, with an arrival anticipated in 2027. Those are reported plans, not a confirmed launch date or final sales specification. What powertrains are expected?
The same report said the Little G was expected to offer internal-combustion and electric power. Earlier coverage had described an EV-only direction, so the February 2026 report represents a change in what was being reported. Mercedes-Benz had not, in the cited coverage, published final powertrain specifications.
Is it coming to fight the Defender 90?
The reports support a potential contest between the Little G and a smaller Defender, but they do not establish a new model called “Defender 90.” The Defender 90 is part of the existing Defender range; Autocar reported on 17 June 2026 that the name of JLR’s smaller vehicle remained unconfirmed. “Defender Sport” was widely reported as a possible name, not confirmed by JLR. What is known about the smaller Defender?
JLR’s smaller Defender was reported to be in development, with the EMA platform set to support hybrid as well as battery-electric power. The cited report did not establish final model names, launch timing, prices, dimensions, or detailed off-road capability. Mark Cameron, managing director for the Defender and Discovery brands, said: “We’ve got to make sure everything we do as Defender has the DNA of the brand: epic built-to-last, go-anywhere capability.”
How big might the smaller Defender be?
Autocar estimated the smaller Defender at around 4.6 metres long in a report published on 26 September 2025, following sightings of a vehicle testing. That figure is an outlet estimate—not a published JLR specification—and should not be treated as a confirmed dimension. Autocar’s September 2025 report

Why the rivalry is not yet a direct comparison
The vehicles are being positioned in overlapping rugged-SUV territory, but the cited coverage does not provide a manufacturer-to-manufacturer comparison, complete specifications, or evidence that either vehicle has been tested against the other. Their eventual relationship will depend on confirmed availability, dimensions, powertrains, price, and off-road equipment. None should be inferred from the “Little G” or “Defender 90” framing alone.

No production announcement is established by the available coverage. Autoevolution’s “Defender 80e” item presents a speculative render and discusses the rumor around a smaller G-Class; it is evidence of speculation, not confirmation of a JLR model. Autoevolution’s speculative Defender 80e render
