Among the American-brand SUVs in this comparison, the published maximums range from 3,500 pounds for some 2025 Ford Bronco configurations to 6,200 pounds for the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The highest figure shown—8,700 pounds—belongs to a specific 2026 Dodge Durango HEMI V8 configuration with Tow ’n Go, a model Dodge frames as an adjacent full-size CUV rather than a midsize SUV. These are manufacturer-published maximum trailer ratings, not ratings that apply to every trim or a guarantee that a loaded vehicle can tow that much.
Here, “American” means an American brand, not U.S. assembly. Model year and configuration are included because a bare model name does not tell you which engine, trim, or package the maximum requires.

How much can each midsize SUV tow?
The chart compares the cited manufacturer claims for 2025 and 2026 models. It is not a complete list of American-brand SUVs or vehicles assembled in the United States. The Explorer figure is attributed to Jeep’s competitive comparison because a Ford towing guide establishing it was not among the reviewed sources.
| Model and model year | Published maximum trailer rating | Configuration and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Ford Bronco | 3,500–4,500 lb | Ford says the rating depends on trim and performance configuration. Towing above 2,000 lb requires dealer-installed towing equipment. Ford performance page and 2025 Bronco towing guide. |
| 2025 Chevrolet Blazer | 4,500 lb | With the available Trailering Package. Chevrolet 2025 Blazer page. |
| 2025 GMC Acadia | 5,000 lb | With the available Trailering Package; GMC identifies the Acadia as a midsize SUV. GMC SUV comparisons. |
| 2025 Ford Explorer V6 | Up to 5,600 lb | Figure appears in Jeep’s competitive comparison. It is not independently established here by a Ford towing guide. Jeep comparison. |
| 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee | 6,200 lb | Jeep lists this maximum for the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and the 2.0L Hurricane 4 turbo. The 2.0L is unavailable on Laredo and Laredo X. Jeep capability and performance. |
Adjacent comparison: Dodge Durango
Dodge frames the 2026 Durango as an adjacent full-size CUV, so it is shown separately rather than treated as a midsize SUV. Its rating varies substantially by engine and equipment: 6,200 lb for the V6, 7,200 lb as the 5.7L HEMI standard rating, and up to 8,700 lb with Tow ’n Go on HEMI V8 models. The 8,700-lb figure is specific to that package and engine combination, not every Durango. Dodge Durango performance and Dodge towing and capability.

Why the model name alone does not determine capacity
A maximum is tied to a vehicle configuration, not simply its badge. In this chart, the Bronco’s range depends on trim and performance configuration; the Blazer and Acadia maxima require available Trailering Packages; and the Durango’s top rating requires Tow ’n Go with a HEMI V8. The Grand Cherokee figure is stated for particular engines, with the 2.0L Hurricane 4 unavailable on two trims.
Model year matters, too: this comparison mixes 2025 and 2026 ratings. Use the exact model-year towing guide and configuration rather than carrying a number from one year or trim to another. Published maximums also do not by themselves establish tongue-weight limits, receiver ratings, or equipment compatibility; confirm those details in the vehicle-specific documentation.
What to check before towing near the maximum
Calculate capacity for the loaded vehicle
Mopar gives this relationship: Towing Capacity = GCWR – Curb Weight – Payload. GCWR is the gross combined weight rating; payload is the load the vehicle carries, including occupants and cargo. As passengers and gear use payload, the remaining capacity for a trailer may be lower than the headline maximum. Find the guide for the exact vehicle and calculate using its actual configuration and load. Mopar’s Trailering Basics.
Check equipment and trailer limits
For the 2025 Bronco, Ford says dealer-installed towing equipment is required for trailers over 2,000 lb. Ford’s guide also sets a maximum trailer frontal area of 30 sq. ft. for listed Bronco combinations up to 3,500 lb, and 40 sq. ft. with the Raptor Tow Package 2. Ford warns that exceeding the applicable frontal-area limit may significantly reduce performance. These are Bronco-specific conditions, not limits to apply to the other SUVs in the chart. Also verify the hitch, wiring, and trailer-brake-control requirements for the exact vehicle and trailer. Dodge lists integrated trailer brake control and a Class IV hitch among the Durango Tow ’n Go equipment; that does not establish compatibility of aftermarket equipment across the other models.
