Eight watches from Michael Schumacher’s private collection sold for just under CHF 4 million—reported by Christie’s as US$4.4 million and €4.1 million—at its Geneva Rare Watches auction on 14 May 2024. The result is for Schumacher’s watches alone, not the entire auction.
What did Schumacher’s watches sell for?
Christie’s reported the eight-watch total as just under CHF 4 million (US$4.4 million / €4.1 million). The broader Rare Watches auction offered 164 pieces and brought in CHF 22,821,050. Its total should not be confused with the result for Schumacher’s collection. Christie’s sale results
The Associated Press described the Schumacher watches’ combined hammer total as more than CHF 3.1 million. Hammer is the winning bid before the buyer’s commission; Christie’s realized-price figures include the commission. That distinction explains why the two reported totals differ. Which watches stood out?
F.P. Journe Vagabondage 1
The standout was a bespoke F.P. Journe Vagabondage 1, which sold for CHF 1,497,000 (US$1,646,700 / €1,532,928), including buyer’s premium. Jean Todt gave it to Schumacher to mark his seven Formula One world championships. Its custom dial incorporated a Ferrari prancing horse, Schumacher’s helmet and seven championship symbols. Five F.P. Journe Ruthenium watches
Five Ruthenium models were sold as separate lots but bought by the same bidder. Together with their personalized presentation box, they brought in more than CHF 1.7 million (US$1.8 million / €1.7 million), according to Christie’s. Why the sale resonated with racing fans
These were not simply expensive watches grouped under a famous name. Several pieces carried personal details or were tied to specific milestones in Schumacher’s racing career, linking watchmaking and Formula One through commissions, gifts and provenance. The entire 164-piece Rare Watches sale totaled CHF 22,821,050 and was 96% sold by lot. Its top lot was a 1948 Patek Philippe reference 1518, which realized CHF 2,465,000; that watch was not part of Schumacher’s collection. Christie’s sale results
