Miata Generations Compared: Which Mazda MX-5 Is Best for You?

Mazda’s four MX-5 generations differ in era, equipment and roof options, but no generation is a universal winner. Compare the actual car, its condition, price and configuration.

Which Mazda MX-5 is best for you? There is no universally best Miata generation: the right choice depends on the particular car’s condition and price, the model year and trim, and whether you want a cloth soft top or a retractable hardtop. Mazda’s history documents four generations—NA, NB, NC and ND—and how the car changed, but it does not establish a generation-wide winner for reliability, cost of ownership or driving feel.

What are the Miata generations?

The NA, NB, NC and ND are the four MX-5 Miata generation codes. Mazda USA’s dates below describe the North American timeline; debut dates and model years are not interchangeable, and the dates should not be assumed to apply identically in every market.

Generation Debut and North American model years Mazda-documented changes
NA Premiere at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989; went on sale in the US in May as a 1990 model. Mazda USA’s timeline lists 1990–1997. Mazda describes the original as weighing just over 2,000 pounds. Its timeline also notes a short, direct shift and rounded taillights. The weight is Mazda’s approximate historical description, not a specification for every NA trim.
NB Debuted at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show; went on sale as a 1999 model. Mazda USA lists 1999–2005. Mazda says engine power increased slightly, the convertible top included a glass rear window, and new headlights replaced the pop-ups. Mazda’s history also notes limited editions that included a turbocharged version and a Japan-only coupe.
NC Launched at the 2005 Geneva International Motor Show; Mazda USA lists 2006–2015. The first MX-5 generation with a 2.0-liter engine. A retractable hardtop was added a year after launch; Mazda calls it the first Power Retractable Hard Top.
ND Unveiled in the US in September 2014; Mazda USA’s timeline lists 2016 onward. Mazda’s current timeline says curb weight fell by 148 pounds or more, without clearly stating the comparison baseline in the cited description. The RF retractable-fastback roof arrived for the 2017 model year.

How do the generations differ for a buyer?

NA: the original-era car

The NA is the starting point if the original design and first-generation identity matter most to you. Mazda’s historical description emphasizes its low weight and simple, direct shift. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not a head-to-head assessment against later cars; an individual NA’s condition and specification still matter.

NB: a revised second generation

The NB retains the early-generation lineage while adding the changes Mazda identifies, including a glass rear window in the soft top and revised headlights. Special versions varied: Mazda records turbocharged limited editions and a coupe sold only in Japan, so do not assume every NB has the same engine or body configuration.

NC: the first 2.0-liter generation, with a hardtop option

The NC is the generation to consider if Mazda’s first MX-5 2.0-liter engine and factory retractable-hardtop availability are priorities. Mazda also notes steering-wheel controls. These generation-level details do not establish the equipment on every model year or trim.

ND: the latest generation in Mazda’s cited timeline

The ND brings a newer design direction and Mazda’s stated weight reduction. Buyers choosing an ND can compare the manually operated cloth soft top with the RF’s electronically retractable roof. The RF is a retractable fastback body style, not the same roof mechanism or configuration as the NC Power Retractable Hard Top.

Mazda describes the original development concept as “Jinba Ittai,” meaning “rider and horse as one,” and says it continues to symbolize each new generation. That is Mazda’s account of the design philosophy, rather than an independently measured comparison of how the generations drive. Mazda Motor Corporation’s MX-5 history.

Which Miata generation should you buy?

Use the generation as a shortlist, not as a substitute for evaluating an actual car. The available Mazda history is a chronology, not a complete equipment chart or comparative ownership study.

  • Choose by era and design: Start with the NA or NB if the original or early-generation character is your priority; consider NC or ND if you prefer a later redesign.
  • Choose by roof: Decide whether you want a manual cloth soft top or a retractable hardtop. Mazda documents the NC Power Retractable Hard Top and the ND RF; check the specific car’s year and configuration.
  • Choose by the actual equipment: Verify model year, trim, engine, roof and installed features. A generation label alone does not tell you what an individual car has.
  • Choose by condition and local value: Compare asking prices for the specific cars you could buy, review maintenance records and arrange an inspection. Also consider parts and labor availability where you live.

The Mazda material cited here does not provide comparable used-car prices, reliability rates, maintenance costs or generation-wide test results. It therefore cannot support a factual ranking such as “most reliable,” “cheapest to own” or “best handling.”

How does a new 2026 Miata compare with a used one?

For context, Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 US release lists these starting MSRPs for new 2026 configurations. They are not used-car valuations. Mazda says the figures exclude options, taxes, title, license and destination charges.

2026 US configuration Starting MSRP
Soft-top Sport, six-speed manual $30,430
Soft-top Club, manual $33,930
RF Club, manual $41,900
Soft-top Grand Touring, manual $35,730
RF Grand Touring, manual $38,450
Soft-top Grand Touring, automatic $36,650
RF Grand Touring, automatic $39,420

The listed configurations span $30,430 to $41,900 in starting US MSRP. The current US RF page specifies a 2.0-liter engine rated at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft, rear-wheel drive and front-midship placement; those figures describe the 2026 RF, not every ND year or trim.
