Key Largo is about 60 miles from Miami, and VISIT FLORIDA estimates the drive via U.S. 1 at roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. That makes a day trip feasible with an early start, but the estimate is not a door-to-door guarantee: the sources use different starting points, and traffic can slow the Overseas Highway. Make John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park the day’s main event, then decide whether there is time for one more stop.
How far is it from Miami to Key Largo?
VISIT FLORIDA gives an approximate distance of 60 miles and a drive time of about 1 hour and 15 minutes via U.S. 1. The Florida Keys tourism authority describes the route from Miami International Airport as taking the Florida Turnpike south to U.S. 1 in Florida City, then continuing about 22 miles to Key Largo. These figures use different starting points, so treat them as planning estimates rather than a precise address-to-address travel time. Visit Florida Keys and VISIT FLORIDA provide route and destination guidance.
South of Florida City, U.S. 1 becomes the Overseas Highway. Key Largo spans approximately mile markers 108 to 90; the green mile markers count down toward Key West. Traffic can build during busy travel periods, so leave room in the schedule for delays instead of planning a tight arrival for a boat departure.
The Overseas Highway has no tolls, according to VISIT FLORIDA. The Florida Turnpike Extension and Card Sound Road use cashless electronic tolling, with SunPass, compatible transponders, or Toll-by-Plate. Check your planned route and toll arrangements before leaving Miami. The Overseas Highway is designated an All-American Road and crosses 42 bridges along the Keys route, according to the Florida Keys tourism authority.

What to do on a Key Largo day trip
Make John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park the anchor
Plan the day around John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where visitors can book a snorkel trip or a glass-bottom boat tour. VISIT FLORIDA recommends reservations, particularly for weekends and holidays, and says the cited snorkel tour includes equipment. Confirm departure times and availability directly before setting out.
Choose one main water activity
Pick the experience that suits your group rather than trying to fit every activity into one visit. Snorkeling puts you in the water for a closer reef experience; a glass-bottom boat offers reef viewing without swimming. Kayak rentals are another option around the park and Key Largo, while diving may suit visitors with the appropriate experience and arrangements. Current schedules and conditions determine what is available.

| Option | Water exposure | Planning consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Snorkel excursion | In the water | VISIT FLORIDA recommends reserving ahead on weekends and holidays; its cited tour includes equipment. |
| Glass-bottom boat | Stay aboard | See the reef without getting wet; confirm the operator’s current schedule. |
| Kayak rental | On the water, not underwater | Check current rental availability and conditions with the provider. |
Water visibility, sea conditions, and tour operation are not guaranteed. Check with the park or tour operator before committing to a specific departure.
Keep the afternoon open
If the park visit ends early, add a meal or one more Upper Keys stop. Islamorada is a possible extension, but VISIT FLORIDA estimates 10–12 hours for its longer Upper Keys itinerary that includes Key Largo and Islamorada. Treat that as a full-day outing, not a promise that every traveler can complete both destinations within that window.

Park hours, fees, and current access notes
Florida State Parks lists John Pennekamp’s hours as 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year, and an entrance fee of $8 per vehicle plus 50 cents per person. These are the figures on the state park page accessed in 2026; confirm current hours, fees, and notices shortly before travel because they can change. Florida State Parks: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
The state park page also carries a notice effective July 22, 2026: one of the two boat ramps and the boat sewage pump-out station are closed during construction, and boat-trailer parking is significantly reduced. This notice is especially relevant if you are bringing a boat; check the park page for the latest status before departure.

VISIT FLORIDA reports snorkel tours at around $50 per person with equipment included, but its page warns that prices and schedules change. Use that amount only as a planning estimate and verify the current price and inclusions with the operator before booking. VISIT FLORIDA’s Key Largo guide.

A car gives you control over departure time and makes it easier to add a meal or another stop. The Florida Keys tourism authority also lists rental cars, shuttles, scheduled buses, private transfers, taxis, and rideshare among regional transportation options. Availability and coverage vary, so travelers without a car should confirm the exact Miami pickup, Key Largo destination, return schedule, and how they will get between attractions before relying on a service. For a day trip, the key trade-off is flexibility versus arranging each leg and connection in advance. If you want to visit only one scheduled attraction, a confirmed round-trip transfer may work; if you want to change plans or add a stop, driving is more adaptable. Do not assume local transport will be available on demand at your destination.
Quick Recap
A simple day-trip plan
- Leave Miami early. Allow more than the approximate 1-hour-15-minute estimate if your plans depend on a specific tour departure.
- Go to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Confirm park access, activity availability, and any current construction notice; reserve a tour in advance when possible, especially on a weekend or holiday.
- Choose one main activity. Book snorkeling if you want to get in the water, or a glass-bottom boat if you prefer to stay dry. Consider kayaking only after checking current availability and conditions.
- Use the remaining time for one flexible stop. Have a meal or, if the schedule allows, extend the outing toward Islamorada rather than trying to pack in multiple distant stops.
- Start back with a traffic buffer. Check conditions before the return drive and avoid relying on a tight arrival time in Miami.
